Start with the games you actually want to play
Make a short list of games you expect to play, then check their current platform availability. If the titles that matter most to you are associated with PS5 exclusives, that is a strong reason to choose PS5. If your must-play games are available on Xbox and Game Pass’s current catalog includes titles you would otherwise buy, Xbox Series X may be the better fit. Game availability and subscription catalogs can change, so verify specific games before purchasing.

There is no reliable winner for shared games based on the manufacturers’ product pages alone. Sony and Microsoft both describe high-frame-rate capabilities, but those claims are not a guarantee that every game runs at a particular resolution or frame rate. A meaningful performance comparison would need current, game-by-game testing under matching settings and display conditions.
Compare the exact console configurations
These product names cover different configurations, so compare like with like—especially if you need a disc drive. Sony’s US PlayStation Direct listing reviewed here describes the PS5 slim CFI-2100 model group with a disc drive and 1 TB of built-in storage. Microsoft lists Xbox Series X in 1 TB Carbon Black and 2 TB Galaxy Black versions, both with a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, as well as an all-digital 1 TB white version. Advertised capacity is not the same as space available for games: Sony notes that some PS5 storage is reserved for system software. The listings describe 4K-ready or 4K gaming and capabilities up to 120 fps/120 Hz, but treat these as product capability language, not a promise for every game or setup.
Think about the library you already own
PS4 games on PS5
Sony says over 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5. That is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s manufacturer-published figure, accessed in 2026, rather than an independent audit. Check individual titles and any disc requirements: owning a PS4 disc does not help with a digital-only console.

Older Xbox games on Series X
Microsoft describes thousands of supported games across four Xbox generations, including Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles. It does not mean every game from those generations works. Microsoft also says Xbox One games, saves, achievements, and friends carry over. Check a specific title’s compatibility before treating it as part of your usable library.

Assess subscriptions by games and total cost
Xbox promotes Game Pass benefits that include hundreds of games, online multiplayer, and day-one releases; its comparison page describes Game Pass Ultimate as bundling hundreds of games, online multiplayer, EA Play, and day-one releases. Sony’s PlayStation Plus has membership plans and an evolving PS5 and PS4 game catalog, with classic games also promoted. The exact catalog, plan entitlements, and prices vary or change, and the available information does not establish current fees across markets.
Compare the current local price of the console, the subscription tier you would actually use, and the games you expect to play. Do not value a catalog by its headline size alone: check whether the games you want are currently included and whether you would keep paying for the membership. Sony says a paid PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer; Microsoft’s product page promotes online multiplayer among Game Pass benefits. Xbox also notes that standalone products are not included in console bundles and that options and pricing vary by market. Factor in storage and accessories
Xbox offers Series X models with 1 TB and 2 TB built in, and Microsoft sells a separate Series X|S Storage Expansion Card. Microsoft says the card connects through the dedicated expansion port and matches the internal custom SSD’s performance. The company also lists support for USB 3.1 external hard drives; do not assume an ordinary external HDD behaves like the expansion card for every current-generation game. Sony’s reviewed PS5 listing specifies 1 TB built in and notes that system software reserves some space. If you plan to add an M.2 drive, check Sony’s current compatibility and installation requirements rather than relying on a generic drive recommendation; those requirements are not established by the product facts here.
Choose based on controller preference and friends
Sony identifies DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers as features available in supported games. Microsoft highlights its wireless controller and says most Xbox One controllers and accessories are compatible. Those features may influence the feel of play, but neither establishes which controller is more comfortable for you. If possible, try each before committing.
Also ask where the people you play with are. A console that matches your friends’ platform may be more useful for your multiplayer routine than a small hardware advantage, but confirm that the games you play support the online arrangements you expect.
