If an Xbox Play Anywhere game says Buy, is missing from your PC library, or has not brought your save across, check three things separately: whether that exact game supports Play Anywhere, whether the device is signed in to the account with access to it, and whether the previous game session finished syncing. Xbox purchases do not automatically include a Windows version for every title, and save syncing is not a universal repair process.
First identify which problem you have
Play Anywhere problems usually fall into one of three categories. A purchase prompt points first to game eligibility or account entitlement; a missing install listing points to the relevant device’s library; a missing save calls for checks of the Xbox identity, network connection, and sync status.

- It says “Buy” on the other device: confirm the exact title supports Play Anywhere and that the device uses the account with the purchase or applicable subscription access.
- The game is not listed to install: check the library on the console or PC where you want to install it.
- Your progress is missing: check that both sessions use the same Xbox account and allow the earlier session’s cloud save to finish syncing.
Xbox reported that more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere as of its January 21, 2026 update. That program-wide count does not mean every Xbox game is included.

Confirm Play Anywhere support for that exact title
Play Anywhere is title-specific. Owning an Xbox game does not by itself establish that it has a Windows version or a Play Anywhere entitlement. Check the game’s listing for the Play Anywhere designation using Xbox’s Play Anywhere page.

Check the account and type of access
Make sure the Xbox app and Microsoft Store on PC, or the Xbox profile on console, are signed in to the Microsoft account associated with the purchase or applicable subscription. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules describe both user-based and device-based licenses, so seeing a game on one device does not prove the other is using the purchasing account.
If you access the game through a subscription, check that the signed-in account still has the relevant subscription entitlement. Do not treat subscription access as a permanent purchase; catalogue and access rules depend on the subscription.

If the game is missing from the install list
On Xbox
- Open My Games and Apps.
- Open Ready to Install and look for the supported title.
Xbox identifies Ready to Install as the place to find supported owned Play Anywhere games on console.

- Open Microsoft Store and check its library or owned games for the title.
- Check that Microsoft Store and the Xbox app are signed in to the account with the purchase or applicable subscription access.
- Confirm the game is a Play Anywhere title before assuming an Xbox purchase should appear as a PC install.
Microsoft’s installation guidance points users to Microsoft Store to view owned PC games and to Ready to install on Xbox One. It directs Xbox console game installation problems to Xbox Support.

If your Xbox save did not sync to PC, or vice versa
Check identity and connection
Start both game sessions with the same Xbox account and gamertag, and make sure the device can connect to Xbox network. Xbox says Play Anywhere progress is associated with your gamertag. Microsoft’s XR-052 save-roaming policy sets conditions for roaming, including Xbox network sign-in and a matching game TitleID. In plain terms, a game must use the relevant save implementation and identity for progress to roam; the policy is primarily written for developers, not as a player-side repair guide.
Let the earlier session finish saving
Give the game time to complete cloud synchronization before switching devices. Xbox announced a Game Save Sync Indicator rollout for PC and handhelds on January 21, 2026. Availability can vary with the device or app’s rollout state; if the indicator appears, check its status before opening the game elsewhere. Details are in Xbox’s January update.

Avoid creating a second unresolved save state
If a game reports that syncing is still in progress or unresolved, avoid starting another session or overwriting local or cloud progress until you understand the status. Microsoft’s policy explains when titles must support save roaming, but it does not provide one player-facing recovery sequence for every stalled save. Game-specific save systems and conflict handling can differ, so do not delete local saves as a generic first fix.
When the basic checks do not resolve it
If a save remains missing after checking the account, network connection, and any available sync status, contact Xbox Support or the game’s support team. Include the game title, the devices and game builds involved, the account identity or gamertag (never your password), the approximate time of the last successful save, and any exact error message. For a console installation fault, Microsoft’s support guidance directs users to Xbox Support.
