A TV’s coaxial jack is for antenna or cable signals that the television’s tuner can receive; it does not show a cable box connected over HDMI. First identify what the coax is connected to, then select the matching TV source. For a direct antenna or cable feed, run a channel scan. For a box sending its output over coax, tune the TV to that box’s configured RF channel. If the correct setup still has no picture, check the cable and use a swap test to tell whether the likely problem is the TV or the signal path.
First identify what the coax cable connects to
A coax cable can be part of three different setups, and each needs a different TV source or setting.

| What the coax connects to | What to select or do |
|---|---|
| Over-the-air antenna connected directly to the TV | Select Antenna, TV, or Live TV, then scan for channels. |
| Cable wall outlet connected directly to the TV | Select the TV tuner and scan for channels. Some cable services require a provider box instead. |
| Cable or satellite box connected to the TV by HDMI | Turn on the box and select the HDMI input the box uses. The TV’s coax tuner does not display an HDMI-connected device. |
| Older box, recorder, or receiver sending its output to the TV over coax | Select TV mode and tune to the device’s configured RF output channel. Check the device instructions or provider for the correct channel. |
A coax cable being attached does not establish that the TV is on the right source, that a channel scan has been run, or that a usable signal is reaching the set. Sony says “No Signal” commonly appears when the selected input is not connected to an active device or when the source signal is interrupted or weak (Sony USA, Article ID 00231275).

- For a direct antenna or cable feed, select the TV tuner source, usually labelled Antenna, TV, or Live TV. Exact names vary by model.
- For an HDMI-connected box, select the HDMI port that the box is plugged into and make sure the box is powered on, not in standby.
- For an RF-output box, select TV mode and tune to its configured output channel. Channels 3 or 4 are used in some setups, but they are not universal; use the channel specified for your device or service.
A power interruption or an accidental press of the input button can leave the TV on a source that has no active device.

Reseat and inspect the coax cable
- Turn off connected equipment if its instructions recommend doing so.
- Unscrew or disconnect the coax at the TV and at the antenna, wall outlet, or connected device, as applicable.
- Check that each connector is secure when reattached. Look for a bent or damaged centre pin, corrosion, a loose connector, or a cable that is frayed, crushed, sharply bent, or worn from outdoor exposure.
- If damage is visible or suspected, try a known-good coax lead with compatible connectors. TCL Support specifically advises checking that the pins at both ends are not bent or damaged (TCL Support).
A cable swap can help identify a bad lead, but replacing a cable will not correct a wrong TV source, a missing channel scan, a provider outage, or a failed tuner.
Scan channels for a direct antenna or cable feed
If the antenna or cable line goes straight into the TV, run the channel scan or rescan from the TV’s tuner settings. Menu wording and paths depend on the manufacturer, model, and region. For cable service, direct tuning works only when the service and TV are compatible; some providers require a set-top box. Philips’ DVB-C guidance, for example, covers cable channel installation, but its steps are product-specific (Philips Support UK).

If you moved an antenna, scan again after placing it in its new position. An RF-output box is different: it already sends a channel-modulated signal over coax, so find the box’s configured output channel and tune the TV to it rather than treating the box as a direct antenna feed.
Use a swap test to narrow down the fault
- Try another coax lead. If reception returns, the original cable or one of its connectors was likely the problem.
- Test the same feed on another working TV, if available. If that TV also has no signal, the issue is more likely to be upstream of the original set: the antenna, outlet, building wiring, or provider feed.
- Connect the affected TV to a known-working feed, if available. First select the correct tuner source and scan if it is a direct antenna or cable feed. If that feed works on another TV but not this one, the affected TV’s settings or tuner may need model-specific support.
These tests help separate likely TV-side problems from feed-side problems, but they do not identify every possible upstream fault. If the same line fails on multiple TVs, check with the provider for service interruptions or account-specific setup issues before seeking TV repair. Sony also recommends checking the selected input, channel, and provider when a set shows no picture (Sony USA, updated 2025-09-02).

If you use an antenna, improve its position
Over-the-air reception depends on location and antenna placement. Try raising the antenna, placing it near a window, or aiming it toward local broadcast towers where practical; then rescan channels. Moving the antenna can change which stations the TV receives, so a fresh scan helps it find channels at the new position. If reception remains poor after checking the connections and placement, an antenna suited to the location may be worth considering. This will not resolve a cable-provider outage or a TV tuner fault.
