Neither is automatically better. A laptop’s built-in webcam is usually the practical choice if its image and angle work for you. An external webcam makes sense when you have a specific problem to solve—such as poor framing at a desk with an external monitor, or a need for autofocus, a different field of view, or a physical privacy feature. Compare the actual cameras and your setup, not just whether a camera is built in or its resolution number.
What matters most in a video-call camera?
The camera’s position, your lighting and the meeting app’s output settings all affect what other people see. Resolution is only one part of image quality: sensor performance, focus, field of view and mounting also matter. Lenovo’s webcam-selection guidance identifies these as factors to consider; it does not establish that external cameras outperform built-in cameras as a category.

Placement can be especially important if you use an external monitor. A laptop camera stays attached to the laptop screen, which may sit below or to the side of the display you are watching. A separate camera can be mounted to better suit the screen and your eye line, but only if its position works with your seating and monitor arrangement.
Built-in vs. external webcam at a glance
| Factor | Built-in laptop webcam | External webcam |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience and portability | Already attached to the laptop; useful when you move between locations or want no extra device or cable. (Dell) | Adds a separate device and cable; best suited to setups where you can leave it in place. (Dell) |
| Position and eye line | Position is fixed relative to the laptop screen. (Dell) | Can be mounted separately to suit a monitor and seating position. (Dell; Lenovo) |
| Image and controls | Results depend on the camera and setup; do not assume resolution alone determines the call image. (Lenovo) | Some models offer features such as autofocus, different field-of-view options or privacy features; availability varies by model. (Lenovo; Logitech) |
| Connection and software | No separate camera cable or mount to arrange. | Check the port, cable reach, mount, meeting-app support and whether advanced controls need software. (Lenovo) |
| Price | No separate webcam purchase is needed. | Requires buying a separate device; the sources cited here do not establish a general price comparison. |
When the built-in camera is the better choice
Stick with the laptop camera if you work in different places, want to avoid extra equipment, and are satisfied with how you look on calls in your usual lighting and position. Dell highlights the ready availability of an integrated camera for people who work across locations.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Before replacing it, check whether the issue is actually the setup: improve the light falling on your face, adjust the laptop’s angle, confirm the meeting app is using the intended camera, and review its video output settings. A camera’s specification does not by itself determine the resolution or quality other callers receive.
When an external webcam is worth considering
Consider a separate webcam for a fixed desk if the laptop camera gives you an awkward angle—particularly when you look at an external monitor—or if a specific model has a feature you need. Some external webcams provide autofocus, a wider or adjustable field of view, or a physical privacy feature, but these are model-specific rather than guaranteed advantages of every external camera.

How to decide
- Identify the problem. Is the image too dark, the angle awkward, or a particular feature missing? If you cannot name a shortcoming, a new camera may add setup and cost without improving your calls.
- Try changing the setup first. Adjust lighting and camera position, then check the selected camera and video settings in your meeting app.
- Compare specific models if a problem remains. Check image-related features, field of view, mounting, cable and connector, app compatibility, and any required software.
- Choose for your routine. Favor the built-in camera if portability and simplicity matter and its image is satisfactory; favor an external model only when its placement or particular features suit your needs.
