Use HDMI OUT to send your Xbox One’s picture and sound to a television or AV receiver. Use HDMI IN only when you want another HDMI device—most commonly a cable or satellite box—to pass through the console. For ordinary gaming, the correct route is Xbox HDMI OUT to a TV HDMI input.
The ports look similar, but their signal directions are opposite. Choosing the wrong one is the most common reason an Xbox appears to be connected but produces no picture.

HDMI IN and HDMI OUT at a glance
| Port | Signal direction | Connect it to | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI OUT | Leaves the Xbox One | A television HDMI input, or an AV receiver HDMI input | Displaying and hearing Xbox games, apps and system output |
| HDMI IN | Enters the Xbox One | The HDMI output of another device, such as a set-top box | Passing an external video and audio source through the console |
In a normal console-to-TV installation, HDMI IN is unused. It is not the socket for the television cable, and it is not an additional output for a second display.

What the Xbox One HDMI OUT port does
HDMI OUT is the console’s video-and-audio path. It carries the Xbox dashboard, games, streaming apps and sound toward the display equipment.

Direct connection to a television
- Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the Xbox One port labeled HDMI OUT.
- Plug the other end into an available HDMI input on the television.
- Turn on the TV and select the exact HDMI input used by the cable, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
The television receives the Xbox signal only from the output port. Plugging the TV cable into HDMI IN reverses the intended direction and normally leaves the screen without an Xbox picture.
Connection through an AV receiver
If your home-theater receiver handles switching or audio, the documented chain is:
- Xbox One HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the AV receiver.
- AV receiver HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the television.
- Select the receiver input that corresponds to the Xbox cable, then select the TV input connected to the receiver.
In this arrangement, the receiver sits between the console and the display. The Xbox still uses its own HDMI OUT; its HDMI IN is not involved.

HDMI IN accepts the output of a separate HDMI source. Microsoft’s home-theater directions describe connecting a set-top box HDMI output to the Xbox One HDMI input, then sending the Xbox HDMI output onward to the receiver or television.

Set-top box passthrough
- Connect the cable or satellite box’s HDMI OUT to the Xbox One’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the Xbox One’s HDMI OUT to the AV receiver or directly to the TV.
- Choose the receiver or TV input carrying the Xbox signal.
- Use the Xbox’s television or OneGuide features, where available on your console software and region, to access the external source.
The set-top box remains the device generating the television picture. The Xbox is receiving that signal and routing it onward; HDMI IN does not turn the Xbox into a television tuner.
Why HDMI IN is not the TV connection
An HDMI input is designed to receive an upstream device. A television is normally downstream from the console, so its cable must attach to HDMI OUT. Connecting the TV to HDMI IN asks the Xbox to receive a signal from the TV rather than send one to it.
Which port should you use for common setups?
| Your equipment | Xbox connection | Port left unused |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One and TV only | Xbox HDMI OUT → TV HDMI input | Xbox HDMI IN |
| Xbox One, AV receiver and TV | Xbox HDMI OUT → receiver HDMI input; receiver HDMI OUT → TV | Xbox HDMI IN |
| Xbox One, set-top box and TV | Set-top box HDMI OUT → Xbox HDMI IN; Xbox HDMI OUT → TV or receiver | None, if passthrough is required |
| Xbox One and a second monitor | Use Xbox HDMI OUT for the display path | HDMI IN does not provide a second Xbox display output |

2. Check the television input
Use the TV remote’s Input or Source control and select the HDMI number physically connected to the Xbox cable. A correct cable in the wrong on-screen input produces the same blank result as a disconnected cable.
3. Remove unnecessary equipment temporarily
If a receiver or switch is in the path, connect Xbox HDMI OUT directly to the TV as a diagnostic baseline. Once the direct connection works, reconnect the receiver and verify that its output is connected to the TV and that the receiver is set to the Xbox input.
4. Check every link in a passthrough chain
For a set-top box, verify both directions: the box must feed Xbox HDMI IN, while Xbox HDMI OUT must feed the receiver or TV. Reversing either cable breaks the chain.
5. Test the cable and input
Reseat both HDMI plugs and try another HDMI input on the TV. Xbox One consoles shipped with a High Speed HDMI cable, according to Xbox Wire; a replacement or additional cable is only necessary when the original is missing, damaged or unavailable for the installation.

- BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices
4K, HDR and passthrough limitations
Higher-resolution installations add compatibility requirements. Xbox Wire’s guidance for Xbox One S and Xbox One X says that equipment used in a 4K Ultra HD passthrough path must support both 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2. That includes the relevant receiver or other device between the console and the television.
Do not assume that every Xbox One model, receiver or HDMI IN arrangement supports 4K. A device can pass an ordinary HD signal yet fail to pass a 4K or protected 4K signal.
Recommended 4K troubleshooting path
- Connect Xbox HDMI OUT directly to a 4K TV HDMI input.
- Confirm that the TV input and cable support the mode you are trying to use.
- If the direct connection works, add the receiver or passthrough device back into the chain and check its published 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 support.
- If the picture fails only after the receiver is reintroduced, leave the Xbox directly connected to the TV and use a separate audio route supported by your equipment, or replace the incompatible link.
Microsoft recommends a direct connection to the 4K television as the best-results baseline. This does not mean HDMI IN is universally unusable for 4K; it means every device in that path must support the required formats.
HDMI cable requirements
The described connections use standard HDMI cables: one for Xbox HDMI OUT to the TV or receiver, and another when a set-top box feeds Xbox HDMI IN. Xbox Wire states that Xbox One consoles shipped with a High Speed HDMI cable. You may need an extra or replacement cable for a receiver chain or passthrough setup, but a particular brand is not required by these connection instructions.

For 4K UHD, evaluate the complete path rather than judging a cable or port in isolation. The console, receiver or other passthrough equipment, TV input and content-protection requirements all affect whether the signal arrives correctly.
Common connection mistakes
| Mistake | What you may see | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| TV cable plugged into Xbox HDMI IN | No Xbox picture | Move the cable to Xbox HDMI OUT and select the matching TV input. |
| Xbox HDMI OUT plugged into a receiver input, but receiver HDMI OUT is not connected to the TV | Receiver may detect the Xbox, but the TV remains blank | Connect receiver HDMI OUT to a TV HDMI input. |
| Set-top box connected to Xbox HDMI OUT | The external source is not entering the console | Connect the box’s HDMI OUT to Xbox HDMI IN. |
| TV set to the wrong HDMI number | “No signal” despite connected cables | Select the physical HDMI input used by the Xbox or receiver. |
| Non-4K receiver placed in a 4K path | Black screen, failed 4K mode or reduced capability | Test Xbox directly on the 4K TV and verify 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 support before restoring passthrough. |
A simple decision rule
- If the question is “How do I show my Xbox on the TV?”, use Xbox HDMI OUT.
- If another device must feed video into the Xbox before reaching the TV, use that device’s HDMI OUT to feed Xbox HDMI IN.
- If a receiver is involved, Xbox HDMI OUT goes to a receiver HDMI input, and the receiver HDMI OUT goes to the TV.
- If 4K UHD is involved, test a direct Xbox-to-TV connection and confirm 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 support across every passthrough device.
What the manufacturer guidance covers
Microsoft’s archived “Connect Xbox One to Your Home Theater or Sound System” directions, dated June 8, 2015, establish the connection topology for the console, receiver and set-top box. Menu names and software behavior can change over time, so use those directions for the physical signal path rather than assuming every historical on-screen option is unchanged.
Xbox Wire’s November 22, 2017 guidance is specific to Xbox One S and Xbox One X 4K and HDR setups. An Elgato Xbox One capture-device setup page also describes the conventional HDMI input/output direction, but a capture-device page is not a replacement for the console’s own hardware instructions.
