Solo Leveling Novel vs. Manhwa: Which Version Should You Read?

The Solo Leveling novel suits prose readers, while the Yen Press manhwa suits readers who want a full-color comic adaptation. Here is how to choose, start with Volume 1, and avoid unsupported claims about adaptation differences.

Choose the Solo Leveling novel if prose is your preferred way to experience a story; choose the manhwa if you want the comic adaptation in full color. Yen Press publishes both formats in English and catalogs a Volume 1 for each, so a first-time reader can begin without working out a complicated order. The two editions are related, but the available publisher information does not establish a scene-by-scene comparison, a definitive “better” version, or a complete crosswalk between chapters and volumes.

What the two Solo Leveling formats are

“Novel versus manhwa” is primarily a choice of reading experience. The novel presents the story as prose, while the manhwa presents a comic adaptation through sequential illustrated panels. Yen Press catalogs the prose edition as a Solo Leveling novel series by Chugong, with Hye Young Im and J. Torres credited as translators. Its English catalog lists Volumes 1 through 8 and describes the set as all eight novels chronicling the tale of Jinwoo Sung.

Yen Press separately catalogs the comic series. That listing credits Chugong as author, Disciples (Redice Studio) as artist, h-goon as adapter, and Hye Young Im and J. Torres as translators. The publisher describes the comic as “BASED ON THE HIT FANTASY NOVEL” and promotes the webcomic’s “full-color glory.” In practical terms, the comic is an adaptation of the prose source rather than a second unrelated story.

The word manhwa refers to Korean comics. In English publisher listings, this edition may simply be labeled a comic. Those terms describe the same format here; “manhwa” is useful when searching for the adaptation, while “comic” is the wording used in the English catalog.

Novel or manhwa: the decision at a glance

Choose What the publisher establishes Best fit if you want What is not established
Novel English prose series by Chugong; Volumes 1–8 are cataloged; translators are Hye Young Im and J. Torres. A conventional novel-reading experience, written narration, and prose-led pacing. Exact page counts, a chapter-to-volume chart, or a publisher-backed claim that it contains particular scenes absent from the comic.
Manhwa/comic Comic adaptation with Chugong as author, Disciples (Redice Studio) as artist, h-goon as adapter, and Hye Young Im and J. Torres as translators. The publisher highlights full color. Illustrated panels, visual action, character design, and color presentation. A complete account of every adaptation change or proof that it is more complete or more faithful.

There is no objective winner in the catalog information. The evidence supports a format decision, not a quality ranking. If you normally finish novels more readily than comics, that preference is more useful than a claim that one edition is universally superior.

Why the novel is the better starting point for some readers

You prefer prose over panels

A prose novel places narration, description, dialogue, and the reader’s imagination at the center. You decide how a setting, movement, or character should look rather than receiving a fixed drawing for each moment. That can be the more satisfying option if your normal reading habit is fiction in paragraph form.

This is a format advantage, not a claim about the author’s sentence-level style. The publisher’s catalog confirms that the English edition is a novel series; it does not provide a critical assessment of the prose, a reading-level rating, or a translation-quality score.

You want the full English novel line in one catalog

Yen Press lists Volumes 1 through 8 in the English novel series. For a reader who wants to collect the prose edition, that is a clear catalog endpoint in the information available here. It also gives a new reader a simple first step: begin with the novel’s Volume 1 rather than trying to enter at a later volume.

You like controlling the visual interpretation

Illustrated adaptations make many visual decisions for you. A novel leaves more room to imagine scale, movement, atmosphere, and faces. Some readers experience that as greater immersion; others find it slower because every image must be built mentally. Neither response demonstrates that one version tells the story more accurately.

You want to read without treating adaptation differences as a checklist

The available official listings do not provide a chapter-by-chapter map or a reliable inventory of scenes changed, moved, or omitted in the comic. If your goal is simply to experience the prose source, the novel avoids the need to verify those differences. You can read Volume 1 and continue in order through the cataloged volumes.

Why the manhwa is the better starting point for other readers

You want action and setting shown rather than described

The comic communicates through panels, lettering, composition, and color. Movement, expressions, environments, and visual scale are presented directly instead of being rendered only through prose. That makes the manhwa a natural choice for readers who find sequential art more immediate than paragraphs.

You specifically want the full-color edition

Yen Press invites readers to experience the webcomic “in all of its full-color glory.” Full color is the publisher’s stated presentation feature, so it is a sound reason to choose the comic even when you have no interest in comparing fidelity. It is also a different ownership experience from a prose book: the page is designed around panels and artwork rather than continuous text.

You are new to Solo Leveling and want an easy entry point

Yen Press catalogs Solo Leveling, Vol. 1 in both the novel and comic lines. Starting with the comic’s Volume 1 keeps the decision uncomplicated and avoids assuming that you know which later installment corresponds to a particular novel chapter.

You read comics more consistently than novels

The most useful measure is completion. A format you will actually read is preferable to a theoretically more comprehensive choice that remains unopened. If you usually follow illustrated series, the manhwa’s panel-based structure may be the practical starting point. That is a reader-fit judgment, not evidence that the comic is better made.

What is known about the adaptation—and what is not

The publisher establishes a straightforward relationship: the comic is based on the fantasy novel. It does not, in the cited catalog material, establish how many scenes differ, whether events occur in exactly the same order, or whether either version includes material the other does not. Those are common questions, but they require a verified chapter-level comparison rather than assumptions about adaptations in general.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, be cautious with statements such as “the novel has all the missing scenes,” “the manhwa skips major arcs,” or “you must read both to understand the ending.” None of those conclusions is supported by the catalog details available here. The safe conclusion is narrower: the formats tell a related story through different media, and the comic is an adaptation of the novel.

Translation and credits: what an English reader can verify

Hye Young Im and J. Torres are credited as translators for the Yen Press novel series. The comic listing also credits Hye Young Im and J. Torres as translators, while h-goon is credited as adapter and Disciples (Redice Studio) as artist. The shared translator credits make the editions easier to identify in the English catalog, but they do not prove that every wording choice is identical across prose and comic dialogue.

A reader’s concern about English translation quality is understandable, but the available material does not include a professional review, a comparative translation study, or a measurable quality rating. One anecdotal reader discussion cannot establish that a translation is poor or that one format is consistently better translated. Evaluate the edition as a whole—your comfort with the language, the readability of the sample available from the retailer or library, and whether the format keeps you reading—rather than relying on an unsupported blanket verdict.

How to choose and start, step by step

  1. Decide whether you want prose or illustrated panels. If your first preference is a conventional novel, select the novel. If your first preference is a full-color comic, select the manhwa.
  2. Start with Volume 1 in that format. Yen Press catalogs a first volume for both lines. Do not select a later installment based on an assumed equivalence between comic and novel numbering.
  3. Check the edition label before buying or borrowing. Confirm that the listing says “novel” or “comic” and that it is the English edition you intend to read.
  4. Continue in the same format until you know why you want to switch. Switching because you prefer panels, prose, or color is straightforward. Switching because you expect a specific missing scene requires a verified crosswalk that the cited catalog pages do not provide.
  5. If you switch, begin with the other format’s Volume 1 when accuracy matters. This is the only starting point that avoids guessing where an adaptation change may have occurred. Readers who simply want to sample the other medium can still start at its first volume and treat it as a parallel experience.

Common questions about reading both versions

Should you read the novel before the manhwa?

No required order is established. Choose the medium you are most likely to finish and begin with its Volume 1. Reading the novel first may suit a prose reader; reading the comic first may suit someone who wants the publisher’s full-color presentation.

Is the manhwa a separate story?

No. Yen Press describes the comic as based on the fantasy novel. It is a comic adaptation, not an unrelated title. The available catalog information does not quantify every change between the two.

Can you jump from a novel volume to a matching comic volume?

The cited official listings do not provide a chapter-to-volume crosswalk. Because of that, a precise jump point cannot be recommended responsibly. Start at Volume 1 of the second format if you need certainty.

Does the novel have a confirmed audiobook edition?

Yen Press lists an audio-related series on the novel page, but the available listing does not establish current product details or availability. Do not assume that an audiobook is currently sold, complete, or available in your region without checking a current catalog entry.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose the novel when prose, narration, and an eight-volume English catalog matter most.
  • Choose the manhwa when illustrated panels, visual action, and full color matter most.
  • Choose either format’s Volume 1 when you are new to the series.
  • Do not treat unverified fan claims about omitted scenes or translation quality as established facts.
  • If you want to compare both, record your own reactions to pacing, clarity, and immersion instead of assuming that one medium is objectively more complete.

The verdict

For a prose-first reader, the Solo Leveling novel is the better choice, and Yen Press provides an English series cataloged through Volume 8. For a reader who wants a comic adaptation in full color, the manhwa is the better choice, with a clearly identified English Volume 1. Start with Volume 1 in whichever medium matches your preferred way to read. The official catalog supports that recommendation; it does not support declaring one version universally superior or promising specific adaptation differences without further evidence.
