Update the Xbox Nano Controller through the Xbox Accessories app. On an Xbox console, open Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories, select the controller, open the … menu under Configure, and choose Firmware version. On Windows 10 or 11, use the Xbox Accessories app with a USB data cable or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Microsoft does not support installing controller firmware over Bluetooth.
The Nano Controller works with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, Android, iOS and compatible smart TVs. It has an internal rechargeable battery, but a USB-C charging cable is required and is sold separately. Because the cable is not identified as an included accessory, obtain a compatible one before setup, especially if you plan to update from a Windows PC.

What you need before updating
Have the following ready before opening the firmware screen:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- An Xbox Nano Controller with enough battery charge to remain on during the process.
- Access to the Xbox Accessories app, either on a supported Xbox console or on a Windows 10/11 PC.
- For a Windows update, a USB-C cable that carries data, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. A charge-only cable can power the controller but cannot provide the data connection needed by the app.
- For console updating, the controller connected to the Xbox console through Xbox Wireless.
The product information confirms compatibility with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, Android, iOS and compatible smart TVs. Compatibility for play does not mean that every device can install firmware; the documented update routes are Xbox Accessories on an Xbox console or Windows PC.

If you are buying a cable specifically for this job, check the connector, data capability, length and seller terms rather than choosing solely by appearance. A cable can fit the USB-C port and charge the battery while still lacking the data wiring needed for Windows detection. There is no fixed cable price or guaranteed retailer inventory stated here, so check current specifications and availability when you shop.
Update the Nano Controller on an Xbox console
The console workflow uses the controller accessory page in Xbox Settings. Menu wording can move after Xbox system updates, but the functions and sequence are the same.
- Turn on the Xbox console and connect the Nano Controller using Xbox Wireless.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Choose Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
- Select the Nano Controller from the list of connected accessories.
- Open the … menu below Configure.
- Choose Firmware version.
- If the page offers Update, select it and follow the on-screen instructions. Keep the console and controller connected until the app reports completion.
Do not open another accessory’s page by mistake if several controllers are paired. The firmware status belongs to the device highlighted in Accessories, so verify the Nano Controller’s name before selecting an update.

If the Firmware version page has no Update option, Xbox Accessories is not offering a newer firmware package for that controller at that time. It does not provide a basis for guessing a version number or assuming that the controller failed. Confirm that the Nano Controller is the selected accessory, then check again after making sure the console software and Accessories experience are current.
If the menu labels look different
Xbox system updates can change the exact placement or wording of Settings items. Look for the controller under Devices & connections, open its configuration page, and locate the firmware entry or the overflow menu represented by three dots. Do not use a phone or tablet app as a substitute for this console path; the documented console process is in Xbox Accessories.
Update on Windows 10 or Windows 11
Windows firmware installation is performed in the Xbox Accessories app. The controller can be used over Bluetooth for supported play connections, but Microsoft documents Bluetooth as unsupported for firmware updates. Use a wired USB connection or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows instead.
- Install or open the Xbox Accessories app on the Windows 10/11 PC.
- Connect the Nano Controller with a USB-C data cable, or connect it through an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
- Wait for the controller to appear in the app, then select it.
- If the app displays Update Required, choose the update command and follow the prompts.
- Keep the wired connection or adapter connection stable until the app confirms that installation has finished. Do not unplug a USB cable that is being used for the update.
Use the app’s device list as the first checkpoint. If the controller is absent, the immediate problem is detection, not firmware availability. Reconnect the cable at both ends, reopen Xbox Accessories and confirm that the Nano Controller is listed before looking for Update Required.

Why Bluetooth cannot install the firmware
Bluetooth is a supported play connection for compatible Windows PCs, tablets, iOS devices, Android devices and smart TVs. It is not a supported firmware-update transport in Microsoft’s instructions. Therefore, an Update option that is absent while the controller is connected only through Bluetooth is expected behavior, not proof that the controller is already current.
Pairing over Bluetooth remains useful when you simply want to play on a compatible device. For maintenance, however, move the controller to USB or use the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Do not switch back to Bluetooth while an update is running.

USB cable versus Xbox Wireless Adapter on Windows
A USB cable is usually the simplest route because it both identifies the controller and provides the update data path. An Xbox Wireless Adapter is also documented for Windows firmware work. If the adapter connection does not make the controller appear, switch to a known-good USB data cable before troubleshooting the app itself.
When comparing the two methods, USB avoids an additional wireless accessory and makes it easier to test the physical connection. The adapter can be useful when you already use one for Xbox Wireless play. Neither option changes the requirement to keep the connection stable until Xbox Accessories reports completion.
Xbox and Windows update methods compared
| Item | Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One | Windows 10/11 |
|---|---|---|
| App location | Xbox Accessories within console Settings | Xbox Accessories app |
| How to find the controller | Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories | Select the controller after opening Xbox Accessories |
| Connection used for update | Xbox Wireless connection to the console | USB data cable or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows |
| Bluetooth firmware updating | Not the documented route | Unsupported by Microsoft |
| Update indication | An Update command appears under Firmware version when available | Update Required appears when the app has an update to install |
The table describes the documented workflows, not a guaranteed firmware release schedule. No current Nano-specific firmware version or release-note list is established here, so the app’s live status is the authority for your individual controller.
Open settings and remap buttons
The Nano Controller supports button mapping through Xbox Accessories on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11. Mapping is handled from the controller’s configuration screen rather than from the normal Bluetooth settings panel.
- Open Xbox Accessories on the console or Windows PC.
- Select the Nano Controller.
- Choose Configure.
- Use the mapping controls shown for that controller to assign the available buttons, then save or apply the configuration when prompted.
Open Configure after the controller is connected through the platform you are using. The screen you see is the authoritative list of controls for that Nano Controller and current app version. If the interface offers only a subset of buttons, that is the supported mapping set shown for your device; do not infer that every control on another Xbox controller is available here.
The cited product information confirms mapping support but does not publish a complete Nano-specific list of every remappable control, profile behavior, vibration setting or accessibility option. The controls displayed in your current Configure screen are therefore the reliable list. Do not assume that features associated with larger premium controllers—such as trigger locks, rear paddles or onboard profile storage—are present unless a model-specific update to the documentation confirms them.
If Configure does not show mapping controls
- Confirm that the Nano Controller, rather than another connected accessory, is selected.
- Close and reopen Xbox Accessories so it can refresh the device state.
- Install available updates for the Xbox console or Windows app, then reconnect the controller.
- If the controller is connected only by Bluetooth on Windows, change to USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter before checking Configure again.
Connection options by device
| Device | Supported connection described for play | Firmware-installation note |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Wireless | Use Xbox Accessories in console Settings |
| Xbox One | Xbox Wireless | Use Xbox Accessories in console Settings |
| Windows 10/11 PC | Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless Adapter; USB can be used for a wired connection | Use USB data or the Xbox Wireless Adapter; Bluetooth updating is unsupported |
| Android or iOS device | Bluetooth | Firmware workflow is not documented in the product and support instructions |
| Compatible smart TV | Bluetooth | Firmware workflow is not documented in the product and support instructions |
This distinction matters when a controller works on a phone or television but does not appear in a firmware utility: play compatibility and update support are separate functions. Use the console or Windows route when you need to inspect firmware or change supported mappings.
Charging the internal battery
The Nano Controller has an internal rechargeable battery. Charging requires a USB-C cable, and the product information says the cable is sold separately; it does not state that one is included in the box. Obtain a compatible USB-C charging cable before setup.
Choose a cable that can also update on Windows
If you only need to charge, a cable that supplies power may be sufficient. If you plan to update firmware from Windows, choose a USB-C cable that explicitly supports data transfer. A charge-only cable can produce the confusing combination of a lit or charging controller that never appears in Xbox Accessories.

- Length: Select enough length for your console or PC position without putting tension on the connector.
- Durability: Reinforced strain relief can reduce failures caused by repeated plugging and unplugging.
- Seller and compatibility evidence: Check current specifications and return terms because cable quality and inventory change.
Charging by USB-C does not itself prove that the cable can communicate with the controller. Treat charging and firmware connectivity as two separate tests. If a cable works for power but not detection, replace it before concluding that the controller or app is defective.
Troubleshoot an update that will not start
The controller is not detected on Windows
- Disconnect the cable and reconnect it firmly at both ends.
- Try a known-good USB-C cable that is confirmed to carry data.
- Close and reopen Xbox Accessories.
- Check whether the Nano Controller now appears in the app before looking for a firmware command.
- If it still does not appear, try the documented Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
Do not diagnose firmware availability until the app can identify the controller. Detection is a connection problem; an absent update command is an availability or current-version result.
The app says no update is available
When Xbox Accessories does not offer an update, the service is not presenting a newer package for that controller at that time. There is no supported reason to force a version number or download an unofficial firmware file. Verify the selected device and keep using the controller unless the app specifically reports an error.
The Update option disappears when using Bluetooth
Switch from Bluetooth to a USB data cable or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Bluetooth remains useful for supported play, but it is not the documented firmware path.
The controller charges but will not update
Replace the cable with one known to support data. Charging confirms that power reaches the controller; it does not confirm that Windows can exchange firmware data. Reopen Xbox Accessories after reconnecting and wait for the controller to be listed.
Recommended Free Tools
Button mapping is unavailable
- Open the controller’s Configure page in Xbox Accessories.
- Make sure the app and the Xbox console or Windows installation are current.
- Reconnect the controller and select it again if multiple accessories are listed.
- Remember that the documented product information confirms mapping support but does not promise every possible control or premium-controller feature.
The update stops or fails during installation
- Keep the controller connected through the same USB cable or Xbox Wireless Adapter used to begin the process.
- Do not switch to Bluetooth midway through a Windows update.
- Close other controller utilities that might be trying to access the device, then reopen Xbox Accessories and retry.
- If the controller is no longer detected, return to the Windows detection steps before attempting another update.
Practical update checklist
- Identify whether you are updating from an Xbox console or Windows 10/11.
- Use the Xbox Accessories workflow for that platform.
- On Windows, avoid Bluetooth for firmware installation.
- Use a USB-C cable with data capability when updating through USB.
- Do not infer a firmware version when the app reports that no update is available.
- Use Configure in Xbox Accessories for supported button mapping.
- Keep a separate USB-C charging cable available because the internal battery and cable are not the same thing.
Xbox menu labels, Xbox Accessories behavior and firmware availability can change with later system or app releases. When the wording differs, follow the same functions: identify the Nano Controller, open its accessory configuration, inspect Firmware version, and use the update command only when Xbox Accessories presents one.
