Microsoft says it connects wirelessly to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and over Bluetooth to Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS, Android and compatible smart TVs. It has an internal rechargeable battery, but Microsoft requires a USB-C cable sold separately and has not published a battery-runtime figure. The controller is listed for release on November 4, 2026. Microsoft Store lists it at $49.99. Because retail testing had not begun when these specifications were published, latency, durability, rumble, headset support and stick technology remain unconfirmed.
What the XBOX Nano Controller is
The XBOX Nano Controller is Microsoft’s compact Xbox gamepad for players who find a full-size controller uncomfortable, for children learning console controls, and for anyone who wants a lighter travel controller. Xbox Wire describes it as a little over 5 inches long and 3.5 ounces. Those dimensions make it substantially easier to pack than a conventional gamepad, although hand fit depends on the player’s reach, grip and preferred stick position.

Microsoft Store lists the controller at $49.99, with a November 4, 2026 release date. Availability and regional pricing can change, so the store listing should be checked when purchasing. James Hunter, general manager of XBOX Accessories, described the product this way: “The XBOX Nano Controller, at $49.99, gives players a new, approachable option for jumping in and sharing the fun.”
Despite its smaller shell, Xbox Wire says the Nano includes all 18 standard gameplay inputs. It also has a programmable Action Button intended for shortcuts such as screenshots and gameplay capture. The compact layout is marketed for family play, travel and games including Minecraft Dungeons II and Forza Horizon 6.

Compatibility: Xbox, PC, mobile and smart TV
Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
On Xbox consoles, the Nano uses Xbox Wireless. Microsoft lists compatibility with both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, so it is not limited to the newest generation. The console must support the relevant Xbox Wireless connection process, and the controller’s final manual will determine the exact pairing-button sequence.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs
For Windows PCs, Microsoft lists Bluetooth connectivity. That means the computer needs Bluetooth hardware or a compatible adapter, and the operating system, drivers and game must recognize an Xbox-compatible controller. A PC that lacks Bluetooth cannot use this wireless method without adding suitable hardware. The cited specifications do not confirm USB data play, so do not assume that plugging in a charging cable turns the Nano into a wired PC controller.
Tablets, phones and compatible smart TVs
Bluetooth support is also listed for tablets, iOS devices, Android devices and compatible smart TVs. “Compatible” matters: Microsoft cautions that mobile and Bluetooth behavior varies by device and software version. A phone may pair successfully yet offer different button mapping, vibration behavior or game support from another phone. Cloud-gaming and smart-TV apps can impose their own controller requirements.

What the compatibility list does not promise
- It does not establish compatibility with every television, tablet, phone or PC configuration.
- It does not confirm that every game exposes all 18 inputs or the programmable Action Button.
- It does not confirm wired gameplay through USB-C.
- It does not guarantee identical features across Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth connections.
Before buying for a specific mobile device or television, check that device’s current controller-support documentation and operating-system version. Microsoft’s compatibility statement is broad, not a guarantee for every model.
How charging works
Internal rechargeable battery
The Nano has an internal rechargeable battery rather than user-swappable AA cells. Microsoft says a USB-C cable is required and sold separately. The cited specifications do not state the cable’s length, charging rate, required wattage or whether any cable is included in the retail package.
Practical charging procedure
- Obtain a USB-C cable suitable for charging and a powered USB port or charger.
- Connect the USB-C end to the controller’s charging port and the other end to the power source.
- Leave the controller connected until its charge indicator or the console/device interface shows that charging is complete. The final indicator behavior should be confirmed in the retail manual.
- Disconnect the cable before storing the controller for travel, and carry the cable with the controller because it is not supplied as part of the cited specification.
Do not infer a specific charging time from the connector type. USB-C describes the connector, not the controller’s charging speed.

Battery-runtime expectations
Microsoft has not published an official runtime number in the cited specifications. There is therefore no defensible “hours per charge” estimate for the Nano. Runtime will vary with connection mode, game activity and any features the final hardware enables. Treat battery life as an unanswered specification until Microsoft or independent testers publish measurements.

Inputs and features
18 standard gameplay inputs
Xbox Wire says the Nano retains all 18 standard gameplay inputs. The compact body therefore aims to preserve the control set expected for Xbox games rather than becoming a simplified children’s pad. The exact spacing and travel of sticks, triggers and face buttons are physical-fit questions; Xbox Wire’s published description does not provide those measurements.
Programmable Action Button
The additional Action Button can be programmed for shortcuts such as taking screenshots and capturing gameplay. Its usefulness depends on the console, operating system and the software or system function assigned to it. Microsoft has not published a complete list of assignments in the cited announcement, so verify the available mappings in the final Xbox settings and manual.

Rumble, headset jack and stick sensors
The official specification does not answer whether the Nano includes rumble, a 3.5 mm headset jack or a particular stick-sensor technology. Early reporting also treated these items as unconfirmed. Do not buy it expecting vibration, direct headset connection or Hall-effect-style sticks until the final manual, product page or a teardown identifies those features.

Latency: what is known and how to interpret it
Microsoft publishes the Nano’s connection methods but no measured latency figure. There is no official basis for calling it faster or slower than a standard Xbox controller. Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, the receiving device, game software and television processing can all affect the time between a button press and an on-screen response, but the Nano’s actual result requires controlled testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen independent measurements become available after retail release, look for tests that identify the connection mode, console or PC, display settings, firmware version and measurement method. A number measured over Bluetooth on a television should not be presented as the latency of Xbox Wireless on a Series X|S. Results from one game or display also should not be generalized to every setup.

For competitive play, use the connection method recommended for the platform and enable the display’s game-optimized mode where available. Those steps may reduce system-level delay, but they do not constitute a Nano-specific latency measurement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Durability, travel and children
What has not been tested publicly
No drop test, durability rating or long-term reliability study was available before retail launch. The Nano’s small size and low weight may make it easier to carry, but they do not prove that it will withstand drops, crushed luggage, liquid exposure or repeated use by children. Avoid treating the marketing focus on portability as a durability certification.
Travel precautions
- Use a protective case only after verifying that its internal dimensions fit the Nano; a case made for another compact controller may not.
- Keep the USB-C charging cable with the controller, since Microsoft says the cable is sold separately.
- Prevent the sticks and triggers from being pressed continuously inside a bag.
- Keep the controller dry and avoid leaving its battery in extreme heat, such as a parked car.
- Inspect the USB-C port and controls after travel before reconnecting it to a console or charger.
Family use
The smaller shell is aimed at younger players and smaller hands, but parents should check whether the child can reach every control without changing grip. A child who has to stretch for triggers or press sticks at an awkward angle may experience more fatigue than with a larger controller. Microsoft has not published a child-safety or impact rating.

The PowerA product is a clearly different, wired controller. It should be considered only if a cable connection suits your setup; it is not evidence about the Nano’s battery, wireless performance or durability.
Who should wait before buying
- Players who require a confirmed headset jack, rumble or a specific stick sensor should wait for the final manual or independent teardown.
- Competitive players who need a measured latency number should wait for controlled retail tests.
- Travelers who need proven drop resistance should wait for durability testing; no rating is currently published.
- Anyone who expects a charging cable in the box should budget for a separate USB-C cable.
- Buyers outside the initial Microsoft Store market should verify local release timing and currency pricing.
What to verify after retail launch
Once the controller is available, confirm the final manual and product page for rumble, audio, stick sensors, wired operation, charging indicators and Action Button assignments. Independent reviewers should report battery runtime under identified conditions, latency by connection type, firmware version, stick behavior and results from repeated drops or long-term use. Those measurements will answer questions that Microsoft’s pre-release specifications leave open.
