Most ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X connection failures are Windows networking, adapter, or router problems—not a separate Xbox wireless system. Work from least disruptive to most invasive: run Windows’ Network and Internet troubleshooter, verify Wi‑Fi and Airplane mode, forget and rejoin the network, restart the modem and router, test the other Wi‑Fi band, update the WLAN driver, and only then use Network reset.
This sequence also tells you whether the fault is on the handheld, the wireless network, your internet connection, or a particular game. A direct Ethernet test is the quickest way to separate Wi‑Fi trouble from an ISP or router fault.

What a Wi‑Fi problem on Xbox Ally actually means
The 2025 ROG XBOX Ally (model RC73YA) and ROG XBOX Ally X run Windows networking. That means Windows 11 settings, adapter drivers, power management, DHCP, DNS, and router behavior determine whether the handheld gets online. Xbox branding does not change the underlying troubleshooting process.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →There are four distinct failure layers:
- Radio or adapter: Wi‑Fi is disabled, Airplane mode is on, the adapter is missing, or its driver is failing.
- Local wireless link: The Ally sees the router but cannot authenticate, has weak coverage, or loses the link when it sleeps or changes power state.
- Internet path: The handheld associates with Wi‑Fi but receives no usable IP address, cannot reach the default gateway, or the modem or ISP is offline.
- Xbox or game service: Windows and the internet work, but a title is unsupported, lacks an online entitlement, or has a service-side problem.
Identifying the layer prevents you from changing router settings for a game-compatibility issue or resetting Windows for an outage affecting every device in the home.

Quick symptom-to-action map
| What you see | Most likely layer | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi toggle is missing | Adapter, driver, or WLAN service | Check Device Manager, enable the adapter, install the manufacturer driver, and restart WLAN-related services. |
| Your network appears but rejects the password | Authentication or router | Re-enter the password, forget and reconnect, restart the router, and check router firmware. |
| It says Connected, no internet | DHCP, DNS, modem, or ISP | Inspect the default gateway, test another device, and try direct Ethernet. |
| Drops after sleep or on battery | Driver or power management | Update the WLAN driver and clear the adapter’s power-saving shutdown option. |
| It is slow only in one room | Coverage, band, or interference | Move closer, compare 2.4 GHz with 5 GHz, and assess whole-home coverage. |
| Only one Xbox game reports an online error | Game or service layer | Check the game’s handheld-compatibility status and online, remote-play, or Game Pass requirements. |

-
Run the automated Network and Internet diagnostic
Open the Get Help app from the Start menu, search for Network and Internet troubleshooter, and run the guided diagnostic. Microsoft says the tool performs checks and attempts common repairs. Apply its recommendation, then test the connection before making another change. This is the safest first step because it does not remove saved networks or reinstall drivers.
-
Confirm the radio state
Select the network icon on the Windows taskbar to open the network panel. Make sure Wi‑Fi is on and Airplane mode is off. If your home network is listed, select it and choose Connect. If Wi‑Fi cannot be enabled or the toggle is absent, skip ahead to the adapter and driver checks rather than repeatedly restarting the router.
-
Forget the network and join it again
Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks. Select the affected network, choose Forget, return to the Wi‑Fi list, select the same network, and enter its password. This clears a stale security profile without affecting other devices. Type the password manually if the router password was recently changed.

Restart the modem and router in the correct order
Unplug both devices. Wait at least about 30 seconds. Plug in the modem first and wait until its status lights settle; then plug in the router and allow it to finish starting. This briefly disconnects every device in the home, so do it when other users can tolerate a short outage. Test the Ally only after the router has returned to normal operation.

Try the other Wi‑Fi band
If the router advertises separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, connect the Ally to the other one. The 5 GHz band can be faster at short range but loses strength more quickly through walls; 2.4 GHz generally travels farther and can be more crowded. A result that changes by room or band points to coverage, interference, or router placement rather than a broken Xbox service.
-
Update the WLAN driver
Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start, expand Network adapters, right-click the wireless adapter, and choose Update driver. Windows Central’s December 7, 2025 walkthrough for Xbox Ally, Xbox Ally X, ROG Ally, and ROG Ally X identifies the MediaTek Wi‑Fi 6E MT7922 (RZ616) 160Hz Wireless LAN Card and obtains a current package from Microsoft’s Update Catalog before installing it through Device Manager.
Your unit may show a different adapter or a different driver revision. Match the package to the exact hardware name and Windows architecture; do not install a random WLAN package. If the downloaded file is an archive, extract it, choose Browse my computer for drivers, point Device Manager to the extracted folder, and restart when prompted. The dated walkthrough is an individual procedure, not a guarantee that every Ally problem is driver-related.

Use Network reset for persistent Windows networking corruption
When simpler steps fail—especially after a major Windows update—open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Select Reset now, confirm, and let Windows restart. Network reset removes installed network adapters and reinstalls them with default settings. You will normally need to re-enter Wi‑Fi passwords, and VPN clients, virtual adapters, or static IP settings may require reconfiguration.

Stop the adapter from powering down
If disconnects happen after sleep, resume, or while the Ally is running on battery, open Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the Wi‑Fi adapter, choose Properties, and open the Power Management tab. Clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, select OK, and restart Windows. If the tab is not present, the driver may not expose that control; update the driver before looking for third-party utilities.

Test the gateway and the internet separately
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt and run
ipconfig. Find the active Wi‑Fi adapter’s Default Gateway address, then runping gateway-address, replacinggateway-addresswith the value shown on your Ally. Replies show that the handheld can reach the router; timeouts point to the local Wi‑Fi link, adapter, or router. A successful gateway ping does not prove that the ISP or DNS is working, so also test a website and another device.Recommended Free Tools

Please review EULA and Privacy policy. For a decisive comparison, connect the Ally directly to the modem with Ethernet where your setup allows it. A USB‑C Ethernet adapter and an Ethernet cable can provide the wired link. If Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi fails, investigate router firmware, placement, channel congestion, and coverage. If Ethernet also fails, focus on the modem, ISP, account, or upstream service rather than replacing the Ally’s Wi‑Fi driver.

Check the game or Xbox service layer
When Windows browsing, downloads, and other online games work but one title reports an online error, stop changing network settings. Check whether the title is listed in Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility program and whether it requires online multiplayer, remote play, or a Game Pass entitlement. ASUS states that remote play and online console multiplayer require an internet connection; cloud gaming also has Game Pass and regional or device requirements.
How to handle the main failure patterns
The Wi‑Fi switch or network list is missing
Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. If the wireless device is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device. A warning icon, an unknown device, or no wireless adapter at all indicates a driver, firmware, or service problem. Install the correct manufacturer package, restart Windows, and check again. If the adapter repeatedly disappears after waking, combine the driver update with the Power Management change above.
The Ally sees the router but will not accept the password
Use Manage known networks to forget the profile, then re-enter the password exactly as configured on the router. Check whether another device can join with the same credentials. If every device fails, restart the modem and router and verify router firmware or security-mode changes. Avoid changing encryption settings until you have confirmed the password and tested a clean profile.
It says Connected but no internet
First test another device on the same Wi‑Fi. If all devices are offline, the modem, ISP, or router’s internet connection is the likely fault. If only the Ally is affected, inspect its gateway with ipconfig, ping that gateway, forget and reconnect, and try Ethernet. A gateway failure means the problem is local; a working gateway with failed web access points farther upstream to DHCP, DNS, the modem, or the ISP.

Disconnects occur after sleep or on battery
Install the current WLAN driver for the adapter shown in Device Manager, clear the adapter’s power-saving shutdown checkbox, and test several sleep-and-resume cycles. If the problem appears only on one battery profile, compare behavior while plugged in and on battery before changing advanced router settings.
Performance is poor only in one room
Repeat the test close to the router, then compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. If speed and stability improve near the router, the Ally is probably functioning and the issue is coverage or interference. Reposition the router, reduce obstructions, update its firmware, and assess whether several household devices show the same weakness. A Wi‑Fi 6 or Wi‑Fi 6E router or a mesh system is a later coverage decision, not a substitute for the basic restart and band tests.
Only a specific game fails online
Verify the game’s compatibility label and service requirements before resetting Windows. Xbox’s program classifies titles as Handheld optimized, Mostly compatible, Unsupported, or Not tested. Those labels describe the game’s handheld experience; they do not indicate that your router is defective. A title can also require a subscription, regional availability, or a separate online service even when Wi‑Fi is healthy.

| Change Wi‑Fi band | Moves the Ally to another radio network | Low | High |
| Update WLAN driver | Changes the handheld’s adapter software | Usually a restart | Moderate; Device Manager can roll back when available |
| Clear power-saving shutdown | Changes adapter sleep behavior | Low | High; reselect the checkbox |
| Network reset | Removes and reinstalls adapters and defaults | Restart plus re-entered networks; VPN and static settings may need repair | Lower; save settings first |

Why Xbox compatibility can look like a connection failure
The Xbox Handheld Compatibility program is designed to set expectations about games on compatible handhelds. Xbox describes its purpose this way: “The Handheld Compatibility program helps you understand when a game will work on your compatible handheld.” A game marked Unsupported or Not tested may fail to launch, display controls incorrectly, or report an online problem even while the Windows connection is sound.
Remote play streams from an Xbox console over the internet, so both the console and the Ally need a working connection. Online console multiplayer also needs internet access and any required account or subscription entitlement. Cloud gaming adds Game Pass and regional or device conditions. Check those requirements independently of Wi‑Fi troubleshooting; changing bands or resetting adapters cannot add a missing entitlement.
When to escalate the problem
Contact ASUS support when the Wi‑Fi adapter remains absent after a correct driver installation and restart, repeatedly disappears from Device Manager, or fails on multiple known-good networks while Ethernet works. Contact Microsoft or your network administrator when Windows networking remains corrupted after Network reset, or when VPN, proxy, or managed-device policies are involved. Contact the ISP when the modem loses service, every household device fails, or a direct wired test cannot reach the internet.
Before escalating, note the Ally model, Windows version, adapter name, time and frequency of disconnects, whether the failure follows sleep or battery use, the result of the gateway ping, and whether another device or Ethernet works. Those observations identify the failing layer faster than a generic description such as “Xbox Wi‑Fi is broken.”
Quick Recap
A practical prevention checklist
- Keep Windows and the WLAN driver current, using the adapter’s exact hardware name.
- Save the home Wi‑Fi password and any VPN or static-network details before using Network reset.
- Use a stable router location and test both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz when room or wall conditions change.
- After a sleep-related drop, check adapter power management before buying new network hardware.
- When only one game fails, verify its Handheld Compatibility label and service requirements first.
- Keep a USB‑C Ethernet adapter and suitable cable available if you regularly troubleshoot connection faults; a wired test can distinguish handheld Wi‑Fi trouble from an internet outage.
