Short answer: The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 handheld PCs with an Xbox full-screen gaming interface. You can install compatible Windows games, stream selected titles through Xbox Cloud Gaming, or use Xbox Remote Play from your console. The Ally X has 1TB of internal storage, 24GB of RAM, an 80Wh battery and impulse triggers; Xbox has not published a complete equivalent storage specification for the standard Ally in the same launch material.
Both models launched with Xbox and ASUS announcements for October 16, 2025, across 45 countries. Prices, stock and regional availability can change, so check the listing for your country before buying.

What are the Xbox handhelds?
The ROG Xbox Ally family combines a conventional Windows 11 gaming PC with a controller-first Xbox interface. Rather than being a separate console operating system, the devices run Windows games and Microsoft’s Xbox software in a full-screen layout designed for handheld use.
Xbox corporate vice president Roanne Sones wrote on August 20, 2025: “Together with ASUS, we are launching the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on October 16.” The launch announcement covered 45 countries. Availability after launch depends on the market, retailer and current inventory.

How much storage does each Xbox Ally have?
ROG Xbox Ally X
| Specification | ROG Xbox Ally X |
|---|---|
| Internal storage | 1TB |
| Memory | 24GB high-speed RAM |
| Battery | 80Wh |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme |
| Trigger feature | Impulse triggers |
The 1TB figure is the advertised internal capacity, not the amount available for game installs after Windows, recovery data and applications use space. Xbox’s launch material does not state the usable free-space figure or an exact number of games that fit.
ROG Xbox Ally
The standard Ally uses AMD Ryzen Z2 A, which Xbox presents as the efficiency-oriented option. The cited launch material does not provide a complete storage figure for this model in the same section, so do not assume that it has the Ally X’s 1TB capacity. Confirm the storage specification for the exact regional configuration before ordering.
Can storage be expanded?
Xbox says compatible high-speed storage accessories can carry more of your library. The launch sources do not specify maximum microSD capacity, usable capacity, or an exact install count. If you buy a card or other expansion device, verify its capacity, speed standard and compatibility with the particular Ally model and operating mode. Keep free internal space for Windows updates, shader data and games you play frequently; move less-used titles to removable storage or uninstall them and redownload later.

There are three different ways to access a game, and they do not provide identical coverage.
1. Install a native Windows PC version
A game can be installed locally when a Windows PC build is available and the title is supported on the handheld. This route uses the Ally’s processor, graphics hardware, storage and controller. It works without an internet connection after installation, although some games may still require an online sign-in or service.
2. Stream through Xbox Cloud Gaming
Where Xbox Cloud Gaming is available, a compatible catalog title can run on Microsoft’s servers and stream video to the Ally. The handheld needs a sufficiently stable internet connection, and the available games and service access depend on your region and Game Pass entitlement. Cloud play avoids a large local install but is sensitive to latency, Wi-Fi quality and service availability.

3. Use Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams a game from your own Xbox console to the handheld. The game remains installed on the console, while the Ally acts as the screen and controller. This is useful for console-only titles that do not have a Windows build or a cloud-streaming option, provided your console is configured for Remote Play and your network can sustain the connection.
What does Xbox Play Anywhere cover?
Xbox says more than 1,000 games support Xbox Play Anywhere. For a supported title, one purchase can carry saved progress and achievements between Xbox, Windows PC, the Xbox Ally where supported and other Windows handhelds. Play Anywhere is not a universal conversion layer: it does not turn every console-only game into a native Windows game. Check the individual title for the Play Anywhere designation and the available access route.
What do the compatibility badges mean?
Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility program gives a practical readiness signal before you install a game. The catalog changes as titles are tested and updated, so check the current entry for a game you care about.
| Badge | Meaning | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld Optimized | The game should launch and play with an appropriate resolution, controller navigation and legible text without tweaking settings. | It is the safest choice for a quick, console-like setup, although performance can still vary with power mode and later game updates. |
| Mostly Compatible | Minor adjustments may be required. | You may need to change a graphics option, use an on-screen keyboard or make another small input or display adjustment. |
| Unsupported | The game is not supported for the handheld experience. | Do not plan on a reliable native handheld installation; consider Cloud Gaming or Remote Play if those routes are available. |
| Not tested | Xbox has not tested the game. | There is no compatibility conclusion from the program, so performance and controls are uncertain. |
What is tested?
Microsoft says the program evaluates controller input, iconography, text input, display resolution and legibility. These checks explain why a game can be technically capable of running on Windows yet still receive a less favorable handheld label.
A separate Windows Performance Fit indicator can show whether a game is expected to play “well” or “great” on a supported device. Performance Fit and the handheld badge answer different questions: one estimates playability, while the other addresses handheld controls and presentation. Neither guarantees identical frame rates across every power profile, resolution, driver or game update.

Examples of launch games
Xbox’s launch guide highlighted Gears of War: Reloaded, South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Hollow Knight: Silksong as games to try. Treat those examples as a starting point rather than a permanent compatibility list; the live catalog is the authoritative place to check a specific title.

How do the controls and Xbox interface work?
Built-in gamepad controls
Both handhelds have integrated gamepad controls with Xbox-style grips, so a separate controller is not required for ordinary play. The Ally X adds impulse triggers, which can provide variable trigger feedback in games that support the feature. The standard Ally does not have that Ally X trigger specification in the cited launch material.
The Xbox button and Game Bar
Pressing the dedicated Xbox button opens an enhanced Game Bar overlay. From there you can return home, browse the library, launch or quit games, chat and access ASUS Armoury Crate SE. This overlay is intended to keep common actions reachable without leaving the game for a traditional desktop window.
Accessibility
Xbox says the Xbox app and Game Bar carry familiar accessibility features from Xbox consoles and Windows 11 PCs. The exact options available can depend on the game and Windows configuration, so review the accessibility settings in both the Xbox interface and the individual title when you need remapping, text assistance or other accommodations.
What updates are planned or available?
Xbox has said the handhelds will receive regular updates that add capabilities and improve performance. Announced features include the following.
- Default Game Profiles: per-game profiles intended to balance frame rate and energy use for selected titles.
- Advanced Shader Delivery: shaders can be preloaded during downloads. Xbox said select games could launch up to 10 times faster on first play. “Up to 10x” is a vendor claim for select games, not a result that applies to every title.
- Docking improvements: planned enhancements for high-performance big-screen gaming, display output and controller pairing.
- Auto SR: announced for the Ally X through the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and its NPU feature set.
- Highlight reels: also announced for the Ally X through that Ryzen AI platform.
An October 2025 Xbox PC-app update improved download optimization. Xbox said the rollout began with Insiders before broader availability, so the timing of the update on a particular device can differ.
Keeping the handheld ready
- Connect the Ally to reliable Wi-Fi and power before large downloads or system updates.
- Use the Xbox interface to open your library and check a game’s current compatibility badge before installing it.
- Install supported Windows games locally when you need offline play; choose Cloud Gaming or Remote Play when local compatibility or storage is a problem.
- Leave adequate storage for Windows, updates and shader data rather than filling the internal drive with rarely played titles.
- After an update, recheck controls and graphics for games marked Mostly Compatible, because a game update or driver change can alter behavior.
ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X: which is better for you?
The right choice depends less on the Xbox badge than on how you plan to play. Use the following comparison points when evaluating the two configurations.

If you install many large games, the Ally X’s stated 1TB drive reduces how often you need to remove titles. If you mostly use Cloud Gaming or Remote Play, storage matters less and the standard model may meet your needs, subject to its local price and the specification of the regional configuration. If you want the announced Ally X-only AI features and impulse triggers, choose the X rather than assuming a software update can add those hardware capabilities to the standard Ally.

A game says Unsupported
Do not treat the label as a promise that a setting change will solve the problem. First check whether the title is available through Cloud Gaming or whether you can stream it from your Xbox console with Remote Play. If neither route is available, choose a supported game or wait for a compatibility update.
A Mostly Compatible game has poor controls or unreadable text
Read the title’s current notes, then try the minor input, display or graphics adjustments the game provides. The badge explicitly allows for tweaking, so this behavior is different from a Handheld Optimized title that should require no such changes.
The internal drive is full
Remove games you no longer play, move suitable content to compatible high-speed storage, and keep room for Windows and shader data. Because Xbox has not published a universal maximum card size or usable-space figure in the cited material, verify expansion details for your specific hardware before purchasing.
Cloud play feels delayed
Latency comes from the network path rather than the handheld’s local game performance. Move to a stronger connection, reduce competing traffic, or switch to a native installation or Remote Play session from a console on a better local network when available.

Shader preparation can affect first-play startup. Advanced Shader Delivery is intended to preload shaders during downloads, but the advertised improvement applies only to select games and should not be generalized to the whole library.
