You can use Game Pass in three different ways: install compatible Windows PC games, stream supported titles from the cloud, or remotely play games installed on your Xbox console. Xbox Play Anywhere titles can carry saves, add-ons and achievements between supported devices, while other games may not. Both handhelds include built-in Xbox controls, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C connectivity and a UHS-II microSD reader.
What the Xbox handhelds actually are
Microsoft and ASUS position the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X as portable Windows gaming PCs with an Xbox-focused interface. The ASUS specification sheet lists Windows 11 Home on both models. Xbox Wire reported that both were available to purchase in its October 30, 2025 update.

That distinction explains most of the frequently asked questions. The handhelds do not create a universal local version of the Xbox console library. A game must have a compatible Windows PC release for local installation, meet the handheld’s compatibility expectations for a good experience, or be played through streaming or Remote Play.

Can you use Xbox Game Pass on an Xbox handheld?
Yes. The practical answer depends on which of three Game Pass routes you use and whether the individual game supports that route.
| Route | What happens | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local PC installation | You download and run the Windows PC version through the Xbox app. | An eligible PC Game Pass entitlement, enough SSD or microSD space, and a compatible Windows version of the game. | A console-only title, or a title without a compatible PC release, cannot be installed locally just because it is in the console catalog. |
| Cloud streaming | The handheld receives a streamed game session instead of installing the game. | An Xbox Game Pass subscription, a supported handheld and a reliable network connection. | Image quality, input response and stability depend on bandwidth, latency and network congestion. |
| Xbox Remote Play | The handheld connects to an Xbox console and streams a game installed on that console. | An Xbox console with the game installed, the same account, Remote Play enabled and suitable network conditions. | The console remains the source of the game; this is not a local handheld installation. |
Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility page describes the cloud option as streaming hundreds of games from the Game Pass library plus select games you own on a supported gaming handheld. Cloud streaming still requires both a subscription and a supported device. Remote Play is a separate feature for games installed on your own console.
How to install a local PC Game Pass title
- Start Windows and sign in to the Xbox app with the Microsoft account that owns the relevant Game Pass subscription or game entitlement.
- Open the library or store view, select a game that has a Windows PC version, and choose Install.
- When prompted for a destination, select the internal SSD or a compatible microSD card with sufficient free space.
- After installation, launch the game from the Xbox app or the Xbox-focused handheld interface. If the title has a Handheld Compatibility label, use that label to decide whether settings changes are likely.
Game sizes vary substantially, so neither internal capacity nor a particular microSD capacity translates into a guaranteed number of installed games. Leave additional free space for updates, shader caches and Windows operations rather than filling a drive completely.

Which Xbox games work properly on the handheld?
Use Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility labels before downloading or buying a game. The labels describe Xbox’s testing and expected setup requirements:
- Handheld optimized: intended to work without settings changes.
- Mostly compatible: expected to work, but may need minor adjustments.
- Unsupported: not supported on the handheld.
- Not tested: Xbox has not tested the game, so the label does not establish that it will work well or fail.
A compatibility label is more useful than assuming that every Xbox console title has an equivalent handheld experience. For a local install, verify that the game also offers a Windows PC version. For a cloud or Remote Play session, the game can be playable without a local PC build, but streaming requirements and network quality still apply.
Will Xbox saves sync to the handheld?
They will when the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere and you sign in with the same Xbox account. Xbox Wire said in its October 30, 2025 update that more than 1,000 games supported Xbox Play Anywhere. For those games, progress can travel between supported PC, console and handheld experiences, including saves, add-ons and achievements, at no additional Play Anywhere charge.

Do not infer Play Anywhere support merely from a game’s presence on an Xbox console. A console listing does not automatically provide a Windows PC entitlement or cross-device save continuity. Check the game’s store information for Play Anywhere support and confirm that you are using the account that owns the game or subscription access.
How to check whether progress is synchronized
- Sign in to Windows and the Xbox app with the Xbox account used on your console or previous PC.
- Install or launch the Play Anywhere game on the handheld.
- Allow the game to connect and finish any pending synchronization before starting a new session.
- In the January 2026 Xbox update, Microsoft added a Game Save Sync Indicator for PC and handheld devices. Use that indicator to see whether progress is synchronized across devices before switching or closing the game.
If a title is not in Play Anywhere, treat its saves as game-specific. Cloud streaming and Remote Play can preserve the console session’s progress, but that does not grant a separate Windows PC save entitlement. Avoid deleting local save data while investigating a mismatch; first confirm the account, game edition and sync status.
How much storage do the ROG Xbox Ally models have?
| Model | Internal storage | Memory | Processor | Battery | Expansion |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Xbox Ally | 512GB M.2 2280 SSD | 16GB LPDDR5X-6400 | AMD Ryzen Z2 A | 60Wh | UHS-II microSD reader |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | 1TB M.2 2280 SSD | 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme | 80Wh | UHS-II microSD reader |
Those are manufacturer-listed capacities; usable space is lower after Windows, recovery data and installed applications occupy part of the drive. The Ally X starts with twice the listed SSD capacity, while its larger memory and battery are separate hardware advantages rather than storage features.

Can you add a microSD card?
Yes. Both handhelds include a UHS-II microSD card reader. SanDisk’s manufacturer data sheet lists a microSD card for the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities, with Windows 10/11 compatibility. A card in one of those capacities can provide additional room for PC game installs and other files, subject to the card’s real formatted capacity and performance.
- Insert the card with the handheld powered down or in accordance with the card and device instructions.
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage to verify that the card is recognized and has the expected free space.
- In the Xbox app’s installation settings, choose the microSD volume as the destination when you want new compatible games stored there.
- Keep the card in the handheld while launching games installed on it. Eject it through Windows before removal to reduce the risk of file-system corruption.
Use a reputable, sufficiently fast card and keep free space available for updates. A microSD card expands capacity; it does not make an unsupported game compatible or turn a console-only title into a native PC installation.

Can you connect an Xbox controller?
Yes. Each handheld already has integrated ABXY buttons, a D-pad, analog sticks, bumpers, triggers and Xbox buttons. For a larger display, docked play or a second player, the devices provide Bluetooth 5.4 and USB-C connection paths for compatible wireless Bluetooth or wired USB controllers and other peripherals.

Bluetooth connection
- Put the compatible controller into pairing mode.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select the controller, complete pairing, and test its buttons in the game or Windows controller settings.
Wired connection
Connect a compatible wired controller to a USB-C port. If the controller is not detected, try another cable or port and check whether Windows reports a driver or power issue. USB-C accessories can also include hubs, keyboards, mice and displays, but a hub may need its own power source when several devices are attached.
What is Xbox mode on Windows?
Microsoft Support describes Xbox mode as a console-inspired, dedicated gaming experience that provides a controller-optimized way to navigate and play on Windows. On these handhelds, Xbox mode can start at sign-in. The Xbox button, Game Bar and Task View provide paths between the Xbox launcher, game library and the Windows desktop.
Use Xbox mode when you want couch-style navigation with the built-in controls. Switch to the desktop when you need normal Windows tasks such as managing files, changing storage locations or installing a launcher outside the Xbox app. A connected external controller can navigate supported Xbox-mode screens, but some desktop dialogs still work better with touch, a mouse or the built-in controls.
ROG Xbox Ally versus ROG Xbox Ally X
The two models share the display, wireless standards, Windows edition and microSD expansion approach. The decision is mainly about how much performance headroom, battery capacity and installed-library space you need.
| Choose the ROG Xbox Ally when… | Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X when… |
|---|---|
| Your priority is a lighter library of local PC installs and the standard specification is sufficient. | You expect to keep more large PC games installed and want the larger starting SSD. |
| You are comfortable using a microSD card when additional space is required. | You want more memory and the higher-tier Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor listed by ASUS. |
| Cloud streaming or Remote Play will handle much of your play, reducing reliance on local storage. | You value the larger battery listed for the model for longer sessions between charges, with actual runtime varying by game and settings. |
Neither model bypasses the per-game compatibility labels. The faster specification of the Ally X does not change an Xbox designation from Unsupported to supported, and the standard Ally still benefits from the same cloud, Remote Play and Play Anywhere features when their requirements are met.
Troubleshooting common problems
Game Pass game is missing an install option
- Confirm that you are in the Xbox app on Windows, not looking only at a console-only listing.
- Check whether the game has a Windows PC version and whether your subscription includes PC access.
- If there is no compatible PC release, use cloud streaming or Remote Play instead, if the game and account qualify.
The game launches but controls or menus are awkward
- Check its Handheld Compatibility label.
- For a Mostly compatible title, apply the minor settings or control adjustments indicated by the game’s setup.
- Use Xbox mode for controller navigation, then switch to the desktop with the Xbox button, Game Bar or Task View if a Windows dialog requires it.
Saves are not appearing
- Verify that the handheld and console use the same Xbox account.
- Confirm that the game is a Play Anywhere title rather than merely an Xbox console game.
- Wait for the Game Save Sync Indicator to show synchronized progress before closing or changing devices.
Cloud play is blurry or delayed
- Test the Wi-Fi connection and reduce competing traffic on the network.
- Move closer to the wireless access point or use a more stable connection where available.
- Remember that a local install removes streaming latency only when a compatible Windows version exists and enough storage is available.
The microSD card is not available for installation
- Check Settings > System > Storage to see whether Windows recognizes the volume.
- Verify that the card is formatted for Windows and has free space.
- Reinsert or safely remount the card before changing the Xbox app’s installation location.
Bottom line for prospective buyers
Think of the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X as Xbox-oriented Windows handheld PCs. Game Pass works through local PC installs, cloud streaming or Xbox Remote Play, and those routes should be chosen separately for each game. Play Anywhere is the key to predictable cross-device saves, while Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility labels are the quickest way to check expected playability. The standard model provides a 512GB SSD and the Ally X a 1TB SSD; both accept UHS-II microSD cards and compatible Bluetooth or USB-C controllers.
