An Xbox gift card is an unredeemed code or physical card containing stored value. Redeeming it moves the full amount into a Microsoft account, where it becomes Microsoft account balance. The card is therefore the funding method; the balance is the account-bound value you spend at eligible Xbox and Microsoft Store checkouts.
That distinction determines whether the money can still be given to someone else, which products it can buy, whether it expires, and what happens if a purchase costs more than the balance.

The difference in one sentence
An Xbox gift card exists outside an account until its code is redeemed. Microsoft then converts the code’s value into Microsoft account balance attached to the account used for redemption. Microsoft says Xbox and Microsoft gift cards, download codes and tokens work the same way after redemption: the entire amount is placed in the Microsoft account and used for eligible purchases.
Before redemption, the recipient controls which account receives the value. After redemption, the account controls the value; the balance cannot be moved to another person or Microsoft account.

What an Xbox gift card is
A physical or digital stored-value instrument
An Xbox gift card can be a card purchased in a store or a digital code delivered electronically. In either format, it represents value that has not yet been attached to a Microsoft account. The code is the useful object at this stage: whoever redeems it determines where the money goes.
What the card does before redemption
An unredeemed card does not itself function as money in the Xbox Store. It must first be redeemed through the intended Microsoft account. This is why giving an Xbox gift card is different from sending account balance: you can hand over the unredeemed card or code, while the recipient chooses the account that receives it.
What Microsoft account balance is
Value stored on one account
Microsoft account balance is the monetary value shown after a gift card, download code or similar token has been redeemed. Microsoft says the full amount is credited to the account rather than remaining on the card. The balance is available when that account checks out at an eligible Microsoft Store or Xbox purchase flow.
Why the distinction matters
Account balance is not a second, transferable version of the gift card. It is the result of redemption and is tied to the account that performed it. Signing out, changing consoles or installing the Xbox app on another device does not move the money; purchases must be made with the account holding the balance.

How to redeem an Xbox gift card
- Choose the destination account. Sign in to the Microsoft account that should own the value. Check the account identity before entering the code, especially on a shared console or family computer.
- Open Microsoft’s redemption option. Use the redeem-code control in the Microsoft Store or Xbox interface while signed in to that account.
- Enter the gift-card code. Submit the code exactly as printed or delivered. A successful redemption credits the full denomination to the signed-in Microsoft account.
- Confirm the balance. Check the account’s payment or balance view before closing the redemption screen. The amount should appear as Microsoft account balance, not as a separate Xbox-only wallet.
- Use it at checkout. Start an eligible purchase in the Microsoft Store, on Windows or on Xbox. If the balance is lower than the total, Microsoft can apply the balance first and charge the difference to another payment method.
Redeem only after deciding which account should own the money. Microsoft’s account-bound rule means an accidental redemption on the wrong account cannot be corrected by transferring the balance later.

What you can buy with the balance
Xbox and Windows purchases
Microsoft lists Xbox products, Windows PCs, phones, Surface hardware, accessories, apps, games, movies and television shows among the types of purchases that account balance can cover. The exact catalog shown at checkout depends on the account’s country, currency and the store in which the purchase is offered.
Can you buy Xbox Game Pass with a gift card?
Microsoft states that gift-card value can be used for Xbox subscriptions. That includes eligible Xbox subscription transactions such as Game Pass when the subscription is offered for purchase through the account’s Xbox checkout. The subscription must be an Xbox subscription; the statement does not make every Microsoft service or every recurring charge eligible.

Can you use an Xbox gift card on a PC?
Yes, after redemption. The value is no longer restricted to the console where the card was purchased. Microsoft says redeemed Xbox and Microsoft gift-card value can be spent at Microsoft Store online, on Windows or on Xbox, so a Windows purchase can use the balance held by the same Microsoft account.
What the balance cannot buy
Microsoft excludes cash, gift certificates and similar cash substitutes. The balance is a store payment method, not a bank account: it cannot be withdrawn as money, exchanged for another gift certificate or used to create a cash equivalent.

Transfer, gifting and shared accounts
Before redemption
An unredeemed card or code is the practical way to give value to another person. Send or hand over the code, and let the recipient redeem it while signed in to their own Microsoft account.

After redemption
Once redeemed, Microsoft says the balance cannot be transferred to another person or Microsoft account. There is no supported conversion from one account’s wallet into another account’s wallet. If several family members need funds, redeem separate cards to the accounts that will actually make the purchases.
Buying on a shared console
On a console used by multiple people, verify the signed-in profile before redeeming. The console is only the device; ownership follows the Microsoft account, so redeeming while another profile is active credits that profile instead.
Expiration, fees and promotional credit
Non-promotional balance
Microsoft’s gift-card terms state that non-promotional account balance does not expire and has no maintenance fee. A normally redeemed gift card therefore remains available until spent, subject to the account, region and store rules.
Promotional balance
Promotional credit is different. Its expiration is set by the promotion that awarded it, so read the offer’s conditions and use the credit by the stated date. Do not assume that a promotional amount follows the no-expiration rule for ordinary account balance.

Country, currency and store-region rules
Matching the denomination to the account
A gift-card denomination can generally be redeemed only by an account registered in a jurisdiction that recognizes that currency. Microsoft also says account balance cannot be converted to another currency. A code bought for one market may therefore fail on an account registered in another market, even if both accounts use Microsoft services.
Catalog and legal restrictions
Local store availability and legal restrictions can affect which products or subscriptions appear. The same balance may show different eligible items in different countries, and a product sold in one Microsoft Store region may not be offered in another.
Published account limits
Microsoft’s current limits guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these default thresholds. Country-specific exceptions can apply.

These thresholds matter when redeeming several cards, funding a large hardware purchase or managing linked family accounts. A declined redemption or purchase at a limit is not evidence that the code is invalid.
How split payment works
If the account balance does not cover the full eligible purchase, Microsoft says the balance is used first and another payment method covers the difference. For example, a balance of 20 in the account can be applied to a 30 purchase, with the remaining 10 charged to the second method presented at checkout.

The second method still needs to be accepted for that transaction and region. If checkout does not offer a split payment, the product, subscription, store region or payment flow may require one method to cover the full amount.
Troubleshooting common problems
The code was redeemed on the wrong account
Check the account’s balance and order history to confirm where the credit landed. Because Microsoft does not support transferring account balance, contact Microsoft Support promptly with the redemption details; do not expect to move the funds yourself.
The code is rejected for a region or currency reason
Confirm the country assigned to the Microsoft account and the currency of the card. A mismatch can prevent redemption, and balance cannot be converted after redemption. Use a card intended for the account’s market rather than repeatedly retrying a mismatched code.

Verify that redemption completed successfully and that you are viewing the same Microsoft account used in the redemption step. Sign out and back in, then check the account balance or payment page. Keep the purchase receipt and code details if Microsoft Support needs to investigate.
A purchase does not show account balance
Check whether the item is an eligible Microsoft or Xbox purchase, whether the store region matches the account and whether the balance is promotional with additional conditions. Cash substitutes and excluded products cannot be paid with the wallet.
The balance is too small for the purchase
Continue to checkout and look for a second payment method. Microsoft’s split-payment behavior applies the balance first when the transaction supports it. If no second method is offered, the particular product or subscription may require full payment through another method.
A subscription charge fails
Confirm that the subscription is an eligible Xbox subscription and that the account’s region supports the offer. Microsoft’s gift-card rule is specific to Xbox subscriptions; it does not promise that every recurring Microsoft service can use gift-card balance.

Which option should you use?
Choose an Xbox gift card when
- You are giving value to someone else and want them to choose the Microsoft account.
- You are not certain which account will make the purchase.
- You need a physical present or a code that can be delivered separately from an account.
- You are buying for a recipient in the same supported currency and region.
Use existing account balance when
- The intended Microsoft account is already known and signed in.
- You are paying for your own Xbox, Windows or Microsoft Store purchase.
- You want the balance applied at checkout, including an eligible Xbox subscription.
- You are prepared to keep the funds on that account because transfer is not supported.
Bottom line
An Xbox gift card is the unredeemed funding code; Microsoft account balance is what that value becomes after redemption. Redeem on the correct account, match the card’s currency and region, and use the resulting balance for eligible Xbox and Microsoft Store purchases. Ordinary non-promotional balance does not expire, but it cannot be transferred or cashed out, and promotional credit follows its own deadline.
