If an Xbox gift card code will not redeem, start at microsoft.com/redeem while signed in to the Microsoft account that should receive the money. Enter the 25-character code exactly as printed. A region message usually means the card’s purchase country or currency does not match the country set for your Microsoft account or Microsoft Store. A normal retail card does not expire; a promotional or rewards code can. If the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, or console reports a transaction-version error, update the app or device and retry on the web.
The message matters more than the fact that redemption failed. Region, account, code status, expiration, and outdated software are separate problems with different fixes. Use the checks below in order so you do not waste a valid code or send a technical problem to the wrong company.

Identify the failure before trying another code
Read the complete message and note where it appeared: the redemption website, Microsoft Store, Xbox app, or console. Do not repeatedly submit a code while guessing. A single 25-character code can be attached to only one Microsoft account, and publishing a code in a screenshot or support post can allow someone else to use it.

These categories can overlap. For example, an apparently invalid code may actually be a valid card that was never activated by a retailer, while an account-region mismatch can appear as a generic transaction failure in an app.

Redeem the code through Microsoft’s web page
The web route is the clearest test because it avoids many Store and Xbox-app version problems. Microsoft’s transaction guidance says that if redemption fails in an app, you can redeem on the web instead.
- Open microsoft.com/redeem in a browser.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the balance. Check the profile name or email before entering anything; do not assume the browser has the right account.
- Enter the complete 25-character Xbox gift-card code. Type the characters in their printed order and omit spaces or hyphens unless the page inserts them automatically.
- Select the confirmation control and read the account and amount shown before accepting. Stop if the displayed account is not the intended one.
- After a successful redemption, open the account’s Microsoft balance and verify that the full value was added.
Microsoft describes the process this way: “Microsoft and Xbox gift cards, download codes and tokens all work the same way: once redeemed to your Microsoft account, you can spend your balance at Microsoft Store online, on Windows or Xbox, and you can get downloads for the latest apps, games, movies and TV shows.” The balance belongs to the account shown during redemption, not automatically to every profile on a shared console.
Redeem from an Xbox console or app
Console and app redemption is convenient, but an outdated Store or Xbox app can produce a transaction error even when the code and account are correct. Update first, then try the web page if the error returns.
Xbox console
- Sign in to the Xbox profile linked to the Microsoft account that should receive the funds.
- Open the Microsoft Store on the console and choose the option for redeeming a code. Microsoft may change the exact menu wording as console software is updated.
- Enter the 25-character code using the on-screen keyboard or a connected device.
- Confirm the account and value shown, then complete redemption.
- If the Store displays the latest-version transaction message, install the available console and Store updates, restart the console, and try again at microsoft.com/redeem.
Windows Microsoft Store or Xbox app
- Open the Microsoft Store and install all available Store updates. Update the Xbox app as well if you started there.
- Sign out and back in if the app shows a different Microsoft account than the one intended.
- Retry code redemption in the app.
- If the same transaction message appears, close the app and use the web redemption page. This separates an app-version problem from a code, account, or region problem.
Do not uninstall an app or reset a console as a first response. Those steps can remove local settings without fixing a region or retailer-activation issue.
Fix a wrong-region or wrong-currency error
Region errors concern the country and currency attached to the card and the Microsoft Store account. Microsoft’s product FAQ states: “Gift cards are in local currency, so when you buy a gift card it will only work in the country where it was purchased.” A card bought for one country is therefore not a general-purpose international code.

What to compare
- Card origin: Check the retailer, packaging, receipt, currency symbol, and country printed on the card or digital listing.
- Microsoft account country: Review the country or region associated with the account you selected at redemption.
- Store location: Check the country setting used by Microsoft Store or Xbox on the device.
- Currency: A currency mismatch is evidence of a country mismatch even when the language looks familiar.
Changing a device language does not convert a gift card, and a VPN does not make an out-of-region card valid. Do not present VPN use, fabricated addresses, or region-bypass services as an official fix; they can create additional account and payment problems.
What to do with a mismatched card
If the card was purchased for the wrong country, contact the retailer that sold it and request an exchange or refund under that retailer’s policy. Microsoft explicitly advises: “If you bought the wrong code, please contact the retailer.” Keep the receipt, order confirmation, the unused code, and photos of the packaging. Do not scratch off or disclose a replacement code until you have confirmed its country and currency.

Determine whether the code can expire
An ordinary Xbox gift card purchased at retail does not expire. Microsoft’s FAQ says: “No, gift cards purchased at retail never expire. Note that promotional gift cards like those from Microsoft Rewards or XBOX Game Pass Rewards do expire.”
Retail gift card
A standard card bought from a shop or authorized digital retailer should remain redeemable after the purchase date, provided it is genuine, was activated at sale, has not already been redeemed, and matches the account’s country. A long time in a drawer is not, by itself, evidence that the code is dead.

Promotional or rewards code
Codes issued through Microsoft Rewards, Xbox Game Pass Rewards, a game promotion, a hardware offer, or another campaign can carry an expiration date or a limited redemption window. Find the original email, reward page, or offer terms and check the stated deadline. If the code is expired, ordinary retail-card rules do not apply; contact the promotion issuer or Microsoft channel named in those terms.
Do not infer the code type from the word “Xbox” alone. The source and the offer conditions determine whether an expiration rule applies.
Handle invalid, damaged, or already-redeemed codes
Recheck the 25-character format
Xbox gift-card digital codes use 25 characters. Enter the code from the original message or card rather than from a cropped screenshot. Recheck characters that are easy to confuse, such as letters and numbers, and preserve the original grouping while comparing each position. If a printed character is unreadable, do not guess repeatedly; photograph the card and retain the receipt for the seller.
“Already redeemed”
A redeemed code cannot be transferred to another Microsoft account. First sign in to every account that may have been active on the console, PC, or family device when the code was entered. Check each account’s balance and purchase history. If one account received the money, use that account for eligible purchases; Microsoft does not normally move a redeemed balance between accounts.
If no account shows the balance, contact Microsoft Support with the code, purchase receipt, approximate purchase time, and the exact error. Never send the full code in a public forum. If a retailer sold the card as unused but it was already redeemed, notify the retailer as well and provide the transaction evidence they request.

“Invalid” or unactivated
Retail gift cards can require activation at the checkout. A receipt showing payment does not always prove that the code was activated correctly. Ask the retailer to verify activation through its point-of-sale system. Microsoft cannot activate a card that the retailer failed to activate or that was not issued by an authorized seller.
Make sure the balance is going to the right account
Many redemption failures are account-selection errors rather than code failures. A browser can retain one Microsoft login while the Xbox console uses another email, alias, or Gamertag. Before confirming redemption, compare the profile name shown on the page with the account you use for purchases and subscriptions.
- On a shared console, sign out of profiles that are not the intended recipient before entering the code.
- In a browser, open a private window or sign out completely if the wrong account keeps appearing.
- Check the Microsoft account email and Gamertag, not only the avatar.
- After redemption, verify the balance on that same account before attempting a purchase.
Family members can use a console without sharing a Microsoft balance. The code must be redeemed while the recipient’s account is selected.

The specific message “Unable to complete this transaction. Please update to the latest version of Microsoft Store” points to software maintenance rather than an automatic expiration. Install pending updates for the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, Windows, or Xbox console, then restart the affected device. Retry once in the updated app.

If the app still fails, switch to microsoft.com/redeem. A successful web redemption confirms that the code and account are usable and that the app needs further troubleshooting. A web failure with the same code means you should return to the region, account, code-status, and expiration checks instead of repeatedly reinstalling software.

Know whether to contact the retailer or Microsoft

Retailers control the sale, activation, country, and refund of their cards. Microsoft controls account redemption and the Microsoft balance. Sending a retailer activation problem to Microsoft, or asking a retailer to repair an account error, usually adds delay.
What a successfully redeemed balance can pay for
Once attached to the Microsoft account, the balance can be spent through Microsoft Store online, on Windows, or on Xbox. Microsoft identifies eligible categories including games, apps, movies, TV shows, devices, and Xbox-related subscriptions, subject to Microsoft’s exclusions and the rules shown at checkout.
The balance is not a cash withdrawal and is not automatically transferable to another account. A purchase can still be declined if the product, subscription, billing region, account status, or checkout terms make it ineligible. Check the final payment screen before confirming; it will show whether Microsoft balance is being applied and whether another payment method is required.
Use this decision path when the first attempt fails
- Stop and identify the account: Confirm the email, Gamertag, country, and Store region of the account that should receive the funds.
- Validate the code: Confirm it has 25 characters, re-enter it once carefully, and keep the code private.
- Classify the source: Decide whether it is a normal retail card or a promotional/rewards code with possible expiration.
- Compare country and currency: If they do not match the account and Store, seek a retailer exchange or refund rather than bypassing the region.
- Change channel: Update the Store, Xbox app, or console if prompted, then retry at microsoft.com/redeem.
- Check the balance: After success, verify that the full amount appears on the same account before buying anything.
- Escalate with evidence: Contact the retailer for wrong, unactivated, or incorrectly sold codes; contact Microsoft Support for persistent web, account, or redemption errors.
This order prevents a valid retail code from being mislabeled as expired and keeps a country mismatch from being mistaken for an app outage.
Prevent the problem when buying a replacement
- Choose a listing that clearly states the country and currency, not merely “Xbox gift card.”
- Match the listing’s country to the Microsoft account and Store country that will spend the balance.
- Check whether the listing is retail or promotional and read any expiration terms before paying.
- Save the receipt, order confirmation, and packaging until redemption and balance verification are complete.
- Redeem promptly on the intended account instead of leaving an exposed code in email, chat, or a screenshot.
- For a digital replacement, verify the denomination, region, seller, and delivery method before opening or revealing the code.
A correctly region-matched Xbox gift card is the practical replacement for an out-of-region card. Do not buy a second code until you know whether the first one is mismatched, unactivated, already redeemed, promotional, or merely blocked by outdated software.
