There is no universal winner: choose Xbox Game Pass if you want games across Xbox and Windows PC, supported-device cloud play, or eligible new releases on day one. Choose PlayStation Plus if you play on PS4 or PS5 and want a console-focused catalogue; its Extra tier adds a broad game library, while Premium adds classics, trials and cloud streaming. Start with the hardware you own, then check whether your must-play games are in the live catalogue.
How the services differ
Both subscriptions combine online multiplayer with access to games, but they are built around different ecosystems. Game Pass spans Xbox consoles and Windows PC, with cloud play on supported devices; PC Game Pass is a separate PC-only option. PlayStation Plus is centered on PS4 and PS5, though Premium also offers cloud streaming on PC. Catalogues and features depend on plan, platform and region.

Compare tiers with similar purposes rather than treating either brand as one package. Xbox Essential and PlayStation Essential cover baseline membership features and console online multiplayer. Xbox Premium and PlayStation Extra add larger game libraries, but their supported platforms and extras are not identical. The top tiers include additional benefits that are worth paying for only if you will use them.
What each service includes
Xbox Game Pass
Microsoft’s current plan page lists 50+ games for Essential, 200+ for Premium, 500+ for Ultimate and 300+ for PC Game Pass. These are current catalogue counts, not promises that a fixed set of titles will remain available. Ultimate includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics alongside its Game Pass benefits. See Microsoft’s plan comparison for current plan features and availability.

Game Pass advertises eligible new games on day one, but that does not mean every Xbox-published title arrives at launch. Microsoft said in April 2026 that future Call of Duty releases will be added to Ultimate and PC Game Pass in the following holiday season, about a year after launch. Existing Call of Duty games already in the library remain available. If you are subscribing mainly for the next Call of Duty, do not assume launch-day access. Read Microsoft’s April 2026 update for the stated timing.
PlayStation Plus
Extra is the main step up from Essential for players who want a broad downloadable game catalogue. Premium adds access to the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming. Sony lists cloud streaming on PS4, PS5 and PC, with a minimum 5 Mbps connection and 15 Mbps for 1080p. These features are described on Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page.

Sony lists three- and twelve-month options; the captured Xbox Store listing provided monthly prices for the tiers shown, and the US Premium price was not established. Promotional rates may not be the ongoing renewal price. Avoid comparing annualized totals as though billing periods and offers were equivalent: compare the actual checkout amount, renewal interval and benefits you expect to use. Cloud play: check both device support and limits
PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming is listed for PS4, PS5 and PC. Sony specifies a minimum connection of 5 Mbps, rising to 15 Mbps for 1080p; the feature and its availability depend on the device and region.

Which subscription fits your situation?
- You own a PS5 or PS4 and want a downloadable library: Start with PlayStation Plus Extra and search its live catalogue for the games you actually want.
- You want PlayStation classics, trials or cloud streaming: Consider Premium if those particular additions justify its higher cost than Extra.
- You play on Xbox and Windows PC, or want supported-device cloud play: Compare the Game Pass tier that covers the devices you use. Ultimate has the widest listed Game Pass catalogue and includes additional services; PC Game Pass is PC-only.
- You mainly need online multiplayer: Compare the lowest tier eligible for your platform and region. Essential on either service includes console online multiplayer, but prices and other included games differ.
- You are subscribing for a particular upcoming release: Check that game’s launch timing and its inclusion in the plan. In particular, Microsoft’s April 2026 update places future Call of Duty additions around the following holiday season rather than at launch.
Check a game before you subscribe
- Search the live catalogue for each service using the exact game title, including the edition you want.
- Confirm the game is included in the tier you are considering and is playable on your device; availability can vary by plan, platform and region.
- Look for announced catalogue removal dates. Access can end when a title leaves the catalogue or when the membership expires or is cancelled.
- Check the current checkout price, renewal interval and any promotion for your account and region before paying.
Neither service guarantees that a particular catalogue game will stay included. Xbox says access ends if a game leaves the catalogue or the subscription ends; Sony also notes that its catalogue changes. A subscription is most useful when the current library, platform support and actual renewal terms line up with what you will play.
