Yes—but only on iPhone 17 Pro or later, using an external storage device and a compatible recording app. Apple’s documented workflow is through Final Cut Camera, not a ProRes RAW switch in the built-in Camera app. You will also need a sufficiently fast USB-C connection and enough drive space: Apple estimates that full-sensor recording at 30 fps uses more than 10 GB per minute for ProRes RAW and more than 15 GB per minute for ProRes RAW HQ.
Which iPhones record ProRes RAW?
Apple’s Final Cut Camera guide says: “With iPhone 17 Pro or later and an external storage device, you can record Apple ProRes RAW, which retains all the image data from the camera sensor and lets you adjust camera settings in post-production without losing quality.” Apple’s current iPhone camera guide names iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro models for ProRes RAW recording. The stated threshold is therefore iPhone 17 Pro or later; this does not establish support on earlier Pro models.

Do not confuse ProRes RAW with ordinary Apple ProRes. Apple’s general ProRes support information covers standard ProRes recording on earlier iPhone Pro models, but that alone does not mean they can record ProRes RAW. The general ProRes article’s model list does not include iPhone 18, so it should not be treated as the latest complete compatibility list. For current ProRes RAW compatibility, Apple’s camera and Final Cut Camera guides are the relevant references.

- A supported phone: iPhone 17 Pro or later.
- A recording app: Final Cut Camera is Apple’s documented workflow. Apple says some third-party apps can record ProRes RAW, but support for a particular app and iPhone model should be confirmed with that app’s developer.
- External storage: ProRes RAW recording requires an external storage device. For an external SSD, Apple’s guide specifies exFAT formatting.
- A suitable USB-C cable: Apple’s RAW-recording steps specify a cable with a minimum data speed of 6 Gbit/s. In its broader external-storage guidance, Apple specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbit/s) or faster for ProRes RAW or ProRes 4K at 120 fps. Follow the requirement for the recording mode you intend to use.
- Plenty of free drive space: RAW files are large, and the amount depends on format and recording settings.
How to set up ProRes RAW in Final Cut Camera
- Connect the external storage device to your iPhone with a USB-C cable that meets the applicable speed requirement.
- Open Final Cut Camera and open the recording details.
- Choose an Apple ProRes RAW codec option. The app automatically selects related settings.
- Check the selected resolution and frame rate, then confirm the external drive has enough space for the planned recording.
ProRes RAW versus ProRes RAW HQ
Final Cut Camera offers both Apple ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ. RAW is intended for projects where you want more latitude to adjust white balance, exposure, sharpness and other image properties in post-production. RAW HQ has a higher bit rate and image quality than RAW, at the cost of larger files.
#1 Best Overall
| Format | Apple’s estimated storage at full-sensor, 30 fps | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| ProRes RAW | More than 10 GB per minute | Retains sensor image data for post-production adjustments. |
| ProRes RAW HQ | More than 15 GB per minute | Higher bit rate and image quality than ProRes RAW; requires more storage. |
These are Apple’s estimates in its Final Cut Camera guide, accessed in 2026, not independent measurements or guarantees for every scene and setting. Use them as a planning baseline and leave extra free space for longer takes.
Resolution, frame rate and storage trade-offs
Apple’s guide lists Open Gate at a default frame size of 4224 × 3024, with rates up to 60 fps. It also describes a 17:9 option at 4224 × 2240 that can allow up to 120 fps with certain lenses. Available frame rates depend on resolution and lens, so the maximum is not available in every combination. Higher frame rates and the HQ codec increase the practical storage burden; check the choices shown by Final Cut Camera before recording.

Where can you edit ProRes RAW?
Editor compatibility is specific to ProRes RAW, not simply to standard ProRes. Apple’s general ProRes guidance lists Photos, iMovie, Final Cut Pro for iPad and Final Cut Pro for Mac for editing ProRes files, and notes that unsupported apps may transcode ProRes to H.264. That general list does not establish that every listed app handles ProRes RAW. Check that your chosen editor explicitly supports ProRes RAW and the footage from your recording workflow.

This is why compatibility and control can differ between editing applications even when they support ProRes generally.

Is ProRes RAW worth the setup?
Choose ProRes RAW when post-production flexibility is important enough to justify an external drive, a fast cable and very large files. For a simpler capture-and-share workflow, standard recording formats may be more convenient. The key decision is whether the adjustment latitude suits your project and whether your recording, storage and editing setup all support the format.
