A cage-style rig gives you a place to build out a handheld setup
A phone cage or rig is a mounting platform for accessories such as a microphone, light or grip. It is the more relevant starting point when your priority is assembling a configurable handheld setup, rather than powered stabilization or tracking. Check the particular cage’s mounting points and accessory compatibility; the word “rig” alone does not establish what features a specific product includes.

Will a gimbal fit your iPhone and case?
As an example, DJI recommends phones between 67 and 84 mm wide, 6.9 and 10 mm thick, and 170 and 300 g for the Osmo Mobile 7 series. DJI says a case is permitted only when the combined phone-and-case thickness does not exceed 10 mm. These are compatibility specifications for that product series, not general limits for every gimbal. Confirm your exact phone against the current DJI Osmo Mobile compatibility list and the product’s current FAQ before buying.
Fit is not the only camera concern. DJI notes that, depending on the phone’s lens layout and clamp position, a wide-angle camera may show part of the gimbal. Test the framing you intend to use, especially if you rely on the ultrawide camera.

How app support changes what the gimbal can do
Do not assume every feature works in every camera app. DJI says the Osmo Mobile 7 series’ Multifunctional Module can provide tracking with the native camera app and supported third-party apps, while some ActiveTrack features are limited to Mimo. DJI also notes that resolution options in Mimo depend on the phone’s API. If a particular recording mode or app is essential, check that precise combination in the manufacturer’s FAQ rather than relying on a general claim of app compatibility.

- Movement versus setup: A gimbal is designed for powered stabilization and tracking; a cage is a platform for building an accessory-equipped handheld setup.
- Accessories: For a cage, confirm that the mounts you need are present and that the accessories fit them. For a gimbal, confirm that your phone and case remain within its fit limits.
- Magnets near the camera: Apple advises avoiding accessories that use magnets or magnetic metal near the iPhone rear camera for best camera performance. DJI separately describes its Osmo Mobile 7 magnetic design as closed-loop; that model-specific statement is not a general reason to disregard Apple’s guidance for other magnetic accessories. Start with a cage-style rig if you need a handheld platform for a microphone, light or other accessories. For a stationary shot, consider a phone tripod or support instead. DJI’s Osmo Mobile 7 product page is one current gimbal example, not evidence that it is the best choice for every iPhone or workflow; check current availability and compatibility before purchase.
