Your save and campaign progress usually carries into a purchase when you use the same account, the same compatible game identity (TitleID), the same platform family and a completed cloud sync. The clearest cross-device case is an eligible Xbox Play Anywhere title, which Microsoft says carries saves, add-ons and achievements between supported Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11 PCs.
What Xbox Free Play Days includes
Free Play Days gives eligible Game Pass members limited-time access to selected games. The program page lists the current games and any purchase offers, but both the lineup and prices change. Treat the event as a temporary license to play, not as ownership of the full game.

When the access window closes, you need to buy the exact game edition you want to continue. The important distinction is between profile data, which belongs to your Xbox account, and game-state data, which the title must save and synchronize in a compatible way.

Achievements and Gamerscore are the safest carryover
An achievement unlocked during the trial is recorded as profile data on the Xbox account that earned it. Buying the game later does not normally reset that achievement or require you to unlock it again. The Gamerscore remains attached to the same account as well.

This assumes the purchase uses the same relevant Xbox achievement list. A separately identified release, a different platform version or an edition with a separate title identity can have different progression behavior. If the store listing shows a distinct Xbox and PC product rather than an Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement, do not assume that the lists are interchangeable.
Achievements can appear delayed if the console was offline or synchronization did not finish. Keep the console connected and signed in while playing, then allow the game and Xbox services to complete their normal synchronization before the trial expires.

- You remain within a supported platform family or use a documented cross-platform entitlement.
- The game has successfully uploaded its latest save to the cloud.
- You launch the purchased edition and let it download the cloud data before creating a new save.
Microsoft’s XR-052 policy, dated November 1, 2025, requires supported titles to associate progress, saved state, preferences, achievements and other rewards with the user who recorded them. It also requires save progress to roam across supported Xbox devices when the same TitleID is used and the player is signed in. That policy explains why many trials resume at the last checkpoint, but it is not a blanket promise that every edition, platform release or game implementation will behave identically.

In practical terms, a same-console purchase is usually the least complicated continuation. Moving from an Xbox console to Windows PC, changing editions or using a separately listed platform product introduces additional compatibility checks.

Why the Xbox account and TitleID matter
The account is the ownership and identity anchor. If one person plays the trial while signed in to one account and another person buys or launches the game under a different account, the second account should not be expected to inherit the first person’s achievements or save.
A TitleID is the game’s platform-facing identity used to associate services such as saves and achievements. Two products that look almost identical in a store can still represent different identities: for example, a base release and a separately packaged edition, or an Xbox product and a PC product that is not part of Xbox Play Anywhere. The policy requirement to roam saves applies when the same TitleID is used on supported devices; it does not eliminate edition-specific rules.
Record the exact product name, edition, platform and publisher before purchasing. “Standard,” “Deluxe,” “Ultimate,” “cross-gen” and PC labels are not interchangeable descriptions of entitlement. Use the product page’s compatibility information rather than relying on the game’s cover art or a similar title name.

Xbox Play Anywhere is the strongest cross-device case
Xbox Play Anywhere is Microsoft’s documented program for eligible games. Its documentation says players can continue on another Xbox or a Windows 10/11 PC with their saves, game add-ons and achievements. For a qualifying title, one digital purchase provides access on the supported Xbox and Windows PC versions.
That does not mean every Free Play Days game participates. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge on the Microsoft Store listing or an explicit statement from the publisher. The badge is relevant to the exact product you intend to buy; a similarly named release without the badge should be treated as a separate purchase until its listing says otherwise.
Play Anywhere also has device limits. The documentation covers supported Xbox consoles, Windows 10/11 PCs and, where listed, supported handheld devices. It does not turn an unsupported platform release into a cross-save version, and it cannot repair a save that never synchronized to the cloud.
Checklist before Free Play Days ends
- Stay on the right account. Confirm the gamertag in the Xbox guide is the account you will use for the purchase.
- Make a normal in-game save. Do not stop immediately after a checkpoint indicator appears; use the game’s ordinary save or quit process so the latest state is committed.
- Remain online. Keep the console connected until the game reports that saving or synchronization has completed. Give the system time to upload after returning to the dashboard.
- Write down the exact product. Note the title, edition, platform, publisher and any cross-gen or PC entitlement shown in the store.
- Check for Xbox Play Anywhere. If you plan to move to PC or another supported device, confirm the badge on the specific store page.
- Buy before choosing a different edition. Compare the trial listing with the purchase listing so you do not accidentally select a separately identified product.
These checks reduce the two most common avoidable failures: buying under the wrong account and ending the event before the last save reaches the cloud.

How to continue after buying the game
- Sign in to the same Xbox account used during the trial.
- Install or launch the same edition you played, on the same platform if you are not using a documented Play Anywhere title.
- When prompted, allow the game to download or synchronize existing cloud data. Do not immediately select “New Game” if a cloud-save choice appears.
- Open the load or continue screen and check for the most recent checkpoint or campaign slot.
- After the first successful load, make another save and wait for synchronization before switching devices.
- Check the achievement list on the same account. Already unlocked achievements should remain listed even if the game needs a moment to refresh its status.
Troubleshooting when progress does not appear
The game shows no save
First, close the game and verify that the purchasing account is the account currently signed in. Reopen the title while connected to the internet and wait at the cloud-data prompt. Compare the trial and purchased product names, edition labels and platform. If they differ, the products may use separate TitleIDs and the trial save may not be compatible.
The game loads an older checkpoint
An older checkpoint generally indicates that the latest session did not finish uploading. Return to the console on which you played, launch the trial or purchased copy if it remains available, make a deliberate save, stay online and wait for synchronization. Only a state that reached the cloud can be downloaded on another device.
Achievements are missing or delayed
Confirm that the same Xbox account is signed in and that the achievement was actually triggered in the game rather than merely reaching an in-game milestone. Reconnect to Xbox services, relaunch the title and allow time for the profile to refresh. Do not create a second account or replay the entire game solely because the list has not updated immediately; the achievement belongs to the original account once Xbox records it.
Console progress will not appear on PC
Check whether the purchase is an Xbox Play Anywhere title and whether the PC version is Windows 10/11 and listed as supported. A conventional Xbox game with a separate PC release may not share saves, even when the names match. If Play Anywhere is confirmed, use the same account on both devices and allow cloud synchronization on the console before opening the PC version.
The trial ended before you could save
If the final session ended before a normal save completed, there may be no newer cloud state to recover. Buy the same edition, sign in with the original account and check for any earlier synchronized save. Achievements that were already recorded remain profile data, but unrecorded in-game progress cannot be reconstructed from the expired access window.
If the account, edition, TitleID and synchronization status all match and the save is still absent, preserve the exact product details and contact Xbox support or the game’s publisher. Those details are needed to distinguish an account problem from an edition-specific save implementation.
What is and is not guaranteed
- Guaranteed at the profile level: an achievement and its Gamerscore are associated with the Xbox account that unlocked them, subject to using the same relevant achievement list.
- Required for compatible implementations: Microsoft’s XR-052 policy ties progress and saved state to the user and requires roaming across supported Xbox devices when the same TitleID and sign-in are used.
- Strongest documented cross-device promise: Xbox Play Anywhere carries saves, add-ons and achievements between supported Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11 PCs.
- Not guaranteed universally: every Free Play Days title, edition, separate PC release or cross-gen package will transfer a trial save without checking its identity and synchronization behavior.
No authoritative percentage establishes how often Free Play Days saves transfer across the entire program. Transfer behavior must therefore be evaluated for the specific title and edition rather than treated as a program-wide statistic.
Purchase decision in one minute
Buy with confidence when the account is the same, the store product matches the trial, the latest save has synchronized and the target device is explicitly supported. If any of those conditions is uncertain—especially when moving from Xbox to PC—check the listing for Xbox Play Anywhere or the publisher’s cross-save documentation before paying. That is the point at which edition compatibility matters more than the temporary discount attached to the Free Play Days event.
