To minimize electricity while your Xbox is off, open Settings > General > Power options and select Shutdown (energy saving). Microsoft says this mode uses up to 20 times less off-state power than Sleep; the Xbox Series X and Series S EcoProfiles describe a 95% reduction. Shutdown can still receive system and game updates, so choosing the lowest-power option no longer means giving up background maintenance.
Choose Sleep only when fast wake, remote features, or scheduled availability matter more than minimum standby draw. You can limit Sleep’s higher consumption by setting active hours; after those hours end, the console fully shuts down.

What Xbox energy-saving modes actually change
Xbox uses two modern power states that users commonly call standby. Their names and behavior matter because an apparently powered-off console can still draw electricity for networking, remote commands, scheduled tasks, and updates.

Shutdown (energy saving)
Shutdown is the lowest-power choice when the console is not being used. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire guidance says it cuts off-state consumption by up to 20 times compared with Sleep. The Series X and Series S EcoProfiles published by Microsoft report 95% less power in Shutdown (energy saving). The console takes a full cold start when you turn it on, and features that require the system to remain ready are unavailable while it is shut down.

Shutdown is not an update-disabled mode. Microsoft’s 2023 guidance says it enables carbon-aware updates and allows system and game updates to be installed while the console is in the energy-saving state. Update timing can be managed by Xbox’s network and carbon-aware scheduling, so an update may not begin immediately when the console is switched off.
Sleep
Sleep keeps more of the console’s system available so it can wake quickly and respond to remote or scheduled requests. That convenience requires a higher off-state draw than Shutdown, particularly during the hours when the console is configured to remain active. Sleep is the appropriate compromise for people who regularly use remote play, turn the console on from another device, or want near-instant wake behavior.
Sleep does not have to run continuously. Its active-hours schedule can switch the Xbox to a full shutdown outside the times you specify. Microsoft says active hours default to always active unless you change them, so leaving the default in place forfeits this additional saving.
How to stop your Xbox using power when it is off
The setting is available from the Xbox dashboard. Menu wording can change after system updates, but the published path is:

Shutdown versus Sleep: a practical comparison
| Factor | Shutdown (energy saving) | Sleep |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Lowest standby or off-state electricity use | Fast wake, remote readiness, or scheduled availability |
| Off-state power | Up to 20 times less than Sleep, according to Microsoft; Series X and Series S EcoProfiles state 95% less power | Higher than Shutdown while the console remains active for wake and network functions |
| Starting the console | Cold boot; no universal boot-time figure is published by Microsoft | Faster wake than a cold boot, but Microsoft does not state one universal wake time |
| Remote-play or remote-wake readiness | Always-ready functions are unavailable while fully shut down | Designed to keep more features available for remote or scheduled use |
| Background updates | Supports system and game updates, including carbon-aware scheduling | Supports background activity while active and available |
| Scheduling | Console remains in the low-power shutdown state | Active hours can be set; outside those hours the Xbox fully shuts down |
| Main trade-off | More waiting when you turn the console on and fewer always-ready features | More standby electricity during active hours |
The 20-times figure is a relative comparison, not a promise that every console, household, or instant of use will show exactly that ratio on a wall meter. Microsoft uses different test descriptions across its Xbox Wire articles and model EcoProfiles. Treat the figure as a guide to the direction and scale of the difference, rather than a guaranteed reading for your particular outlet.
How to use Sleep without leaving it active all day
If Sleep is necessary for remote features, configure active hours so the console is ready only when you normally need it. Microsoft says the schedule defaults to always active until changed.
- Open Settings from the Xbox dashboard.
- Select General, then Power options.
- Keep Sleep selected.
- Open the active-hours control. Choose the start and end times that cover your normal remote-play, update, or scheduled-use window.
- Save the schedule and verify that the summary no longer says always active.
When the active period ends, Microsoft says the console fully shuts down and draws about 0.5 watts. That figure is for the post-active-hours shutdown state described in Microsoft’s April 2023 update; it is not the Sleep draw during the active window. The same update lists 10–15 watts while active, which refers to an operating console rather than a universal standby measurement.

Can Xbox download updates in energy-saving mode?
Yes. Current Xbox guidance says Shutdown (energy saving) supports system and game updates. This is a significant change from older advice that treated the lowest-power state as incompatible with keeping software current. Microsoft’s 2023 statement specifically connects Shutdown with carbon-aware updates, which can schedule downloads for times when electricity is expected to have lower carbon intensity.
Several conditions still affect when an update arrives:
- The console must have power and a network connection available at the time Xbox checks for or schedules the update.
- An update may wait for Microsoft’s scheduling logic rather than starting the instant you turn the console off.
- Large game updates can require storage space and may not complete if the console is disconnected from the network.
- Changing from Sleep to Shutdown removes the always-ready behavior that some remote features depend on, even though update support remains.
If keeping games current is your only reason for choosing Sleep, test Shutdown first. Microsoft’s current wording does not require Sleep for ordinary system and game update support.

How many watts does an Xbox use in standby?
There is no single wattage that applies to every Xbox model and every power state. Microsoft publishes relative comparisons and selected measurements rather than one universal standby number.

- Microsoft’s 2022 Xbox Wire statement says Energy Saver uses about 20 times less power than Standby when the console is unused and not receiving updates.
- Microsoft’s 2023 Xbox Wire guidance describes Shutdown (energy saving) as up to 20 times less power than Sleep while the console is off.
- For Sleep configured with active hours, Microsoft says the console fully shuts down after those hours and draws about 0.5 watts.
- The same April 2023 update cites 10–15 watts while the console is active; that is operating consumption, not the off-state draw of Sleep.
- The Xbox Series X and Series S EcoProfiles each report 95% less power in Shutdown (energy saving).
Older hardware used different firmware and power controls. Microsoft’s energy-efficiency page says Xbox 360 standby was reduced to less than 0.3 watts, while an energy-saving configuration on Xbox One could reduce standby use by 98%. Those historical figures should not be substituted for measurements of a Series X or Series S.
Which mode should you choose?
Choose Shutdown when electricity reduction is the priority
- You leave the console unused for long stretches.
- You do not need to wake it from a phone, PC, or remote control.
- You are willing to wait through a cold boot.
- You want the lowest practical off-state draw without disabling update support.
Choose Sleep when availability matters more
- You use remote play or another feature that expects the Xbox to remain ready.
- You frequently switch the console on and value faster wake behavior.
- You need scheduled availability during specific hours.
- You accept higher standby consumption while those active hours are in effect.
Use Sleep with active hours as a compromise
This arrangement suits a household that needs remote access in the evening but does not need the console available overnight. Set active hours around the real use window, then let Xbox shut down automatically outside it. Revisit the schedule if your routine changes; a narrow schedule saves more than leaving the default always-active setting in place.

After selecting Shutdown, turn the console off normally and wait for it to finish shutting down. Do not judge the result from the illuminated front light alone: accessories, network equipment, and external storage can continue drawing power independently of the Xbox.

To estimate energy rather than instantaneous power, multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000 to obtain kilowatt-hours: kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Apply your electricity tariff to the kWh value. Because tariffs differ by region and time, a watt figure alone cannot establish a universal money saving.
Troubleshooting common power-setting problems
The menu does not show Shutdown (energy saving)
Install pending system updates, restart the console, and return to Settings > General > Power options. Microsoft occasionally changes dashboard labels. If the option remains absent, the available choices may depend on the console generation or current system software.
Updates are not appearing after switching to Shutdown
Confirm that the Xbox still has a network connection, that automatic updates are enabled where applicable, and that there is enough storage space. Carbon-aware scheduling can delay an update, so an immediate download is not proof that Shutdown disabled updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRemote play no longer wakes the console
That behavior is expected if the feature requires Sleep. Either return to Sleep or keep Sleep only during configured active hours. If minimum electricity use is more important, leave Shutdown selected and start the console locally when needed.
The Xbox still seems to use power when shut down
Check for an update in progress, external storage, USB accessories, network equipment, and other devices sharing the meter. Allow the console to settle before recording a reading. A nonzero measurement does not by itself indicate that the selected mode failed.
Keeping the setting efficient over time
- Review Power options after major dashboard updates because Microsoft can change defaults or labels.
- Recheck active hours whenever your household schedule changes.
- Keep the console ventilated and connected to a reliable network so scheduled maintenance can complete without repeated wake-ups.
- Use Shutdown for vacations and long periods away; restore Sleep only when you have a specific remote or fast-wake need.
For most owners focused on standby electricity, the decision is straightforward: select Shutdown (energy saving). Sleep remains a convenience mode, not a requirement for receiving Xbox system and game updates.
