Microsoft rates the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 for up to 40 hours per charge. It works with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and with Windows 10 or Windows 11 over Bluetooth, the included USB-C cable, or a separately sold Xbox Wireless Adapter. Windows 7 and 8.1 support is cable-only and excludes some functionality.
The controller’s most useful PC features come through the Xbox Accessories app: remapping, three custom profiles, thumbstick response-curve changes, and motor adjustments. Warranty length is not one universal number; Microsoft says it depends on the device and directs owners to their proof of purchase for the applicable period.

How long does the Xbox Elite Series 2 battery last?
Microsoft’s current Xbox product specification says the controller has an internal, rechargeable battery rated for up to 40 hours per charge. Microsoft also states that battery life varies with accessories, usage, and other factors. “Up to” is therefore a maximum product claim, not a guaranteed result for every game, connection method, or accessory configuration.
What the 40-hour figure means
- The battery is built in and rechargeable rather than designed as a user-swappable AA battery pack.
- Microsoft’s qualification covers usage and other factors, including the accessories attached to the controller.
- The published figure comes from Microsoft testing with preproduction units. It is not an independent endurance measurement.
- The current product page does not show the original publication year for the 40-hour specification.
No cited Microsoft page establishes a guaranteed battery lifespan in years, an independent battery-cycle count, or a user-replaceable-battery procedure. If the controller’s runtime declines substantially, check Microsoft’s device-specific warranty guidance rather than assuming a particular replacement process.

The full Elite Series 2 package includes a charging base, USB-C cable, carrying case, adjustment tool, interchangeable thumbsticks, interchangeable D-pads, and paddles. The USB-C cable can also be used for a wired connection to a console or PC. The Core version has a more limited included set; owners who need the broader physical kit can add the Complete Component Pack.
Which Xbox consoles and PCs support the Elite Series 2?
| Platform | Supported connection | Important limitation or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Wireless or included USB-C cable | Works with the console’s wireless connection or as a wired controller. |
| Xbox One | Xbox Wireless or included USB-C cable | Both connection methods are supported. |
| Windows 10/11 | Bluetooth, included USB-C cable, or Xbox Wireless Adapter | The adapter is sold separately. Xbox Accessories app support is available. |
| Windows 7/8.1 | Included USB-C cable | Some functionality is unavailable; Bluetooth and the Windows 10/11 app arrangement do not apply. |
Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
On Xbox consoles, the controller can pair through Xbox Wireless or operate through the included USB-C cable. The same controller therefore covers current Series consoles and Xbox One without requiring a separate model. The physical controls and adjustable features remain part of the controller, while profile management is handled through supported Xbox software.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Microsoft supports three PC connection paths: Bluetooth, a USB-C cable, and an Xbox Wireless Adapter sold separately. Bluetooth avoids a cable and is convenient for a laptop or a desktop with built-in Bluetooth. USB-C is the simplest wired option and does not require a separate wireless accessory. The adapter provides an additional wireless route for PCs that do not have suitable Bluetooth or for users who prefer Xbox Wireless.
Windows 7 and Windows 8.1
Older Windows versions require the included cable and have some unsupported functionality. If you need wireless pairing or the full Xbox Accessories app feature set, Windows 10 or Windows 11 is the practical requirement stated by Microsoft.
How to connect the controller to a Windows PC
Choose one of these methods based on your PC and whether you want a cable-free setup.
Bluetooth connection on Windows 10 or 11
- Open Windows Settings and go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on and choose Add device, then select Bluetooth.
- Put the controller into pairing mode using its pairing control, and select the Xbox Elite Series 2 when it appears.
- After Windows confirms the connection, open the Xbox Accessories app to check for configuration options or required software updates.
Bluetooth is the convenience option, but it is available here only on supported Windows 10/11 setups. If the PC lacks Bluetooth or pairing is unreliable, use USB-C or the Xbox Wireless Adapter instead.
USB-C wired connection
- Connect the included USB-C cable to the controller and a USB port on the PC.
- Allow Windows to detect the controller and install any required device software.
- Open the Xbox Accessories app if you want to remap controls, create profiles, or adjust response curves and motors.
USB-C is also the required connection method on Windows 7 and 8.1. It is the most direct choice when wireless hardware is unavailable or when you want to avoid pairing.

- Plug the separately sold Xbox Wireless Adapter into the Windows PC.
- Install any driver or Windows update that the system requests.
- Start pairing on the adapter and controller, then confirm the controller appears in Windows.
- Use the Xbox Accessories app on Windows 10/11 for configuration.
The adapter is an optional purchase, not part of the controller’s standard package described by Microsoft.
What PC features work in Windows?
The Xbox Accessories app is available on Xbox consoles and on Windows 10/11. Microsoft notes that software downloads and operating-system updates may be required. Once the controller is recognized, the app provides the core customization features below.
Button mapping
You can assign different functions to the controller’s buttons and paddles. This is useful when a game’s default layout does not suit your hand position or when you want a frequently used command on a rear paddle.

- Custom Controls: Map buttons to your preference, create and store up to 3 custom profiles, and switch between them seamlessly during gameplay
- Cross-Platform Compatibility: Seamlessly connect and play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC with USB-C connectivity and Bluetooth wireless technology
Profiles
The controller supports up to three custom profiles plus one default profile. A profile stores a chosen control arrangement and other supported adjustments, allowing you to switch between game-specific layouts instead of rebuilding them each time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThumbstick sensitivity curves
The app can change thumbstick sensitivity curves. A curve determines how quickly movement responds as you move a stick, so you can choose a more gradual response for precision or a faster response for quicker input, depending on the game.
Motor control
Motor-control settings can be adjusted in the app. These settings affect the controller’s vibration or other motor behavior, allowing you to reduce or change feedback when a game’s default intensity is distracting.
Software and operating-system requirements
If the app is missing a feature or does not detect the controller, first confirm that the PC is running Windows 10 or 11 and that Windows and the app are up to date. Microsoft warns that software downloads and operating-system updates may be required for the supported experience.
What physical controls does the Elite Series 2 include?

- Play like a pro with the Xbox elite wireless controller series 2
- Experience limitless customization and exclusive configuration options with the Xbox Accessories app
- Stay in the game for longer with upto 40 hours of rechargeable battery life. Use Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, or the included USB C cable to play across your Xbox One and Windows 10 devices
- Compatible with Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Windows 10
- Adjustable-tension thumbsticks: three tension settings let you choose a lighter or firmer stick feel.
- Shorter hair-trigger locks: the trigger stops reduce travel for faster repeated input when a game benefits from a shorter pull.
- Wrap-around rubberized grip: the grip material covers the controller’s outer hand-contact areas for a more secure hold.
- Interchangeable thumbstick toppers: supplied toppers can be changed to suit height and shape preferences.
- Interchangeable D-pads: the included D-pad options support different directional-input preferences.
- Four paddles: rear paddles provide additional inputs without requiring your thumbs to leave the sticks.
The adjustment tool supplied with the full package is used for the thumbstick-tension setting. The exact best arrangement depends on the game and the player; the controller’s value is the ability to save different arrangements in profiles rather than a single mandatory setup.
What is included with the full version versus the Core version?
| Consideration | Elite Series 2 full package | Elite Series 2 Core |
|---|---|---|
| Charging base | Included | Included components are more limited; verify the package contents for the specific Core listing. |
| USB-C cable | Included | Package contents are more limited than the full version. |
| Carrying case | Included | Not part of the full package listed for the Core configuration; check the exact bundle. |
| Adjustment tool | Included | Not part of the full package listed for the Core configuration; check the exact bundle. |
| Thumbsticks, D-pads, and paddles | Interchangeable components included | More limited included set; the Complete Component Pack can expand it. |
| Best fit | Buy once if you want the complete physical kit, charging base, and case. | Choose when you want a lower-entry configuration and may add components later. |
Microsoft describes the Core version as having a more limited included set and identifies the Complete Component Pack as the expansion route. Because bundle contents can differ by listing, check the exact package before buying if a case, charging base, particular topper, D-pad, or paddle set matters to you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What warranty does the Xbox Elite Series 2 have?
Microsoft does not state one universal Elite Series 2 warranty duration in the cited warranty guidance. Its wording is: “Your Microsoft PC accessory comes with a limited hardware warranty depending on the device.” For other Microsoft PC accessories, Microsoft says: “check your proof of purchase to identify the warranty period.”
Information you need to establish coverage
Keep the original receipt or other proof of purchase. Microsoft says it must show the retailer, purchase date, and item purchased. The applicable term is device-specific, so do not assume that a warranty period quoted for another Xbox accessory automatically applies to this controller.
How to handle a warranty question
- Locate proof of purchase showing the seller, date, and controller item.
- Record the exact product version, such as the full Elite Series 2 or Core configuration.
- Use Microsoft’s warranty process to identify the term associated with the device and purchase details.
- If the controller has a fault, describe the connection method, operating system or console, and the symptom clearly when requesting support.
Purchase region, seller, receipt availability, and the device-specific term shown in Microsoft’s warranty system can affect how a claim is handled. Without those details, a single number would be misleading.

Common setup problems and practical fixes
The controller works but the app does not show it
Confirm that the PC is on Windows 10 or 11, then connect with USB-C and install pending Windows or Xbox Accessories updates. The app is not the supported configuration route for Windows 7 or 8.1.
Bluetooth pairing is unavailable
Use the included USB-C cable, or add the separately sold Xbox Wireless Adapter. Windows 7 and 8.1 require the cable, so changing Bluetooth settings on those systems will not provide the missing support.
Battery runtime is shorter than expected
Microsoft’s 40-hour statement is an “up to” figure and says usage, accessories, and other factors affect results. Remove unnecessary accessories, charge the controller fully, and compare runtime under similar use. If the decline suggests a hardware fault, gather the required proof of purchase and check the device-specific warranty rather than relying on an assumed battery guarantee.
