Yes—Microsoft’s current Xbox Wireless Controller works with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 and 11, Android, and iOS. It connects to consoles through Xbox Wireless, to compatible computers and mobile devices through Bluetooth, and by USB-C when the controller and host support a wired connection. Smart-TV support is different: only selected television models and operating-system versions expose the Xbox app and accept a controller. Check the exact TV model, software version, app availability in your region, and Bluetooth support before relying on a television for play.

Remote Play and cloud gaming add requirements beyond the controller itself. Remote Play needs your own Xbox console, an account, a supported client device, a compatible controller, and a suitable network connection. Cloud gaming also depends on the service, subscription, supported app or browser, device, and region.

Compatibility at a glance

Platform Primary connection What is officially established Important qualification
Xbox Series X|S Xbox Wireless Current Xbox Wireless Controller is compatible Console pairing uses Xbox Wireless rather than ordinary Bluetooth
Xbox One Xbox Wireless Current controller is compatible Older Xbox One controller revisions differ, especially for Bluetooth use elsewhere
Windows 10/11 Bluetooth, USB-C, or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows Officially supported on Windows 10 and Windows 11 Bluetooth requires a compatible PC; Xbox Accessories button mapping requires a compatible USB-C cable
Android phones and tablets Bluetooth or supported USB-C wired connection Android is listed as compatible Microsoft qualifies support by selected device and operating-system version; individual games may not accept controllers
iPhone and iPad Bluetooth or supported USB-C wired connection iOS is listed as compatible Remote Play lists iOS 15.1 or newer; game support still varies by app
Smart TVs Bluetooth Xbox app support exists on selected LG, Samsung, Amazon Fire TV, and supported Hisense VIDAA televisions Model, operating-system version, region, app availability, and controller verification all matter

Microsoft describes the current controller as supporting Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth for wireless gaming on console, PC, mobile phones, and tablets. Its product documentation also describes pairing with and switching between Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, Android, and iOS devices. That broad description does not mean every feature is identical on every host.

How the connection technologies differ

Xbox Wireless on consoles

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One use Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless protocol for direct console pairing. This is the normal console connection path and should not be confused with the Bluetooth radio used by many phones and PCs. A controller can therefore work perfectly on an Xbox even if a particular computer has no Bluetooth support.

Bluetooth on PCs and mobile devices

Bluetooth is the convenient wireless option for a compatible Windows computer, Android device, or Apple mobile device. The host must support the controller’s Bluetooth profile, and the operating system must be recent enough for its device category. Bluetooth is usually sufficient for button input, but the availability of headset audio, firmware functions, or advanced configuration can differ from Xbox Wireless or USB.

USB-C for predictable wired play

A USB-C cable can provide a wired connection on supported controller models and host devices. It is the simplest fallback for a desktop without Bluetooth and can avoid wireless interference. Use a cable that carries data, not one designed only for charging. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app also requires a compatible USB-C cable when you use it on Windows for controller configuration.

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One

The current Xbox Wireless Controller pairs directly with Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One through Xbox Wireless. For normal console play, turn on the console and controller, start the console’s pairing process, and press the controller’s pair button until the status light flashes. Complete the pairing from the console’s on-screen instructions.

Used-market Xbox One controllers need closer inspection. Some older revisions include Bluetooth and some do not. That distinction matters when you intend to use the same controller with a phone, tablet, or Bluetooth-equipped PC; console pairing itself still uses Xbox Wireless. Verify the exact model revision, not merely the words Xbox One on the packaging.

When a console connection is not working

  • Replace or recharge the batteries, then restart both the controller and console.
  • Move close to the console while pairing and temporarily remove other wireless sources that could complicate discovery.
  • If the controller was recently connected to another host, repeat the console pairing procedure rather than assuming it will reconnect automatically.
  • Try a data-capable USB-C cable to establish a wired connection and to install available firmware updates through the Xbox Accessories app on a compatible device.

Using an Xbox controller with Windows 10 or 11

Windows officially supports the current Xbox Wireless Controller. Choose Bluetooth when the PC has compatible Bluetooth hardware, USB-C when you want a cable, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows when you specifically want Xbox Wireless on a computer. Adapter model compatibility and availability are separate purchasing questions, so check the adapter’s current documentation before buying.

Bluetooth setup

  1. Open Settings in Windows, then select Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on and choose Add device, followed by Bluetooth.
  3. Turn on the controller and hold its pair button until the Xbox light flashes.
  4. Select the controller when it appears in the device list and wait for Windows to report that it is connected.
  5. Launch the game and select its controller input option if the game does not switch automatically.

USB-C setup and configuration

Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible data cable. Windows should detect it as a game controller. The Xbox Accessories app can be used for supported button mapping and controller management on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11, but the Windows app requires a compatible USB-C cable. If a game still ignores input, check its own controller settings and test the controller in Windows’ game-controller panel.

Common Windows limitations

  • A desktop tower may not include Bluetooth; USB-C or an Xbox Wireless Adapter is then the practical alternative.
  • Bluetooth input can work while headset audio or another accessory feature does not. Use USB or Xbox Wireless when a game or headset requires capabilities unavailable over Bluetooth.
  • Some games recognize only one input mode at a time. Disconnect competing controllers and restart the game after pairing.

Android phones and tablets

Microsoft lists Android as a compatible platform over Bluetooth, subject to selected devices and operating-system versions. The phone can recognize a controller while a particular game still lacks controller support; compatibility is ultimately determined by the game or app as well as Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth pairing steps

  1. Open the Android device’s Settings and enter Connected devices, Bluetooth, or the equivalent menu supplied by the manufacturer.
  2. Enable Bluetooth and choose the option to pair a new device.
  3. Turn on the controller and hold its pair button until the light flashes.
  4. Select the Xbox controller in the available-devices list and accept the pairing request.
  5. Open the game or Xbox app and check its controller settings. Some apps require you to enable gamepad input manually.

For wired play, a USB-C-capable Android device can sometimes use the controller through a suitable data cable or adapter. Support depends on the phone, cable, Android version, and game, so Bluetooth is the less complicated first attempt.

iPhone and iPad

iOS is an officially listed platform for the controller, with the same selected-device and operating-system qualification. Pair it in iOS Bluetooth settings, then confirm controller support inside the game or Xbox app.

Bluetooth pairing steps

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Power on the controller and hold its pair button until the status light flashes.
  3. Tap the controller’s name under Other Devices.
  4. Open the intended game or Xbox app and verify that it shows a connected game controller.

USB-C iPhones and iPads can use a wired controller connection where the device, cable, and app support it. Xbox’s Remote Play documentation also describes connecting a controller to a USB-C-capable iPhone or Android phone. A wired connection can be useful when Bluetooth pairing is unstable, but it does not make an unsupported game compatible.

Smart-TV compatibility is selective

An Xbox controller does not automatically work with every smart TV. The key question is whether the television can run the Xbox app and accepts a verified Bluetooth game controller, not simply whether it has Bluetooth for keyboards or headphones.

LG televisions

Xbox lists LG TVs running webOS 24 or newer, including selected 2022 and 2023 models that received the required update. The model number and installed webOS version determine eligibility; the model year alone is not enough.

Samsung televisions and monitors

Xbox lists selected Samsung Smart TVs from 2020 and newer, plus selected Samsung monitors from 2022 and newer. “Selected” is important: two displays from the same year can have different app catalogs or controller support.

Amazon Fire TV devices

Supported Fire TV hardware includes named generations of Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Fire TV Cube, and Fire TV Stick devices. Check the exact Fire TV model before assuming that another stick or television edition will run the app.

Hisense VIDAA televisions

Xbox has also announced rollout to supported Hisense televisions running VIDAA OS. That announcement identifies the Xbox Wireless Controller among compatible Bluetooth controllers, but support remains dependent on the individual VIDAA model, software release, and regional app availability.

Four checks before using a TV

  1. Find the exact television or monitor model number.
  2. Confirm its installed operating-system version and whether the Xbox app is listed in the device’s store.
  3. Check that the Xbox app is available in your country or region.
  4. Verify that the manufacturer documents Bluetooth game-controller support, not merely Bluetooth audio or keyboard support.

The Xbox TV app also lists official Xbox controllers, Sony PlayStation controllers, and other verified controllers. Basic navigation may work while a headset jack, firmware update, or particular button function remains unsupported, so test the features you actually need.

Remote Play: what the controller cannot provide by itself

Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One to another supported device. The controller is only one part of the chain. Xbox lists a console, a compatible phone, tablet, PC, TV, or VR headset, an Xbox profile, a supported Bluetooth controller, and adequate network access.

Xbox’s listed client requirements include Android 6.0 or newer, iOS 15.1 or newer, and Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or newer. A device outside those versions may pair with the controller for ordinary games yet fail to qualify as a Remote Play client.

Remote Play preparation

  1. Enable remote features on the Xbox console and leave it connected to the network.
  2. Install or open the Xbox app, or use the supported client route for your device.
  3. Sign in with the Xbox profile associated with the console.
  4. Pair the controller through Bluetooth or connect it by a supported USB-C cable.
  5. Start Remote Play and select the console. If the stream is unstable, test the network before replacing the controller.

Cloud gaming is a different service path

Cloud gaming streams games from Microsoft’s service rather than from your personal console. It requires the supported Xbox app or browser, a compatible device or TV, the required subscription, and availability in the user’s region. The game catalog, plan terms, supported devices, and regional coverage can change, so check the current service requirements when you subscribe or troubleshoot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A controller can pair successfully while cloud gaming remains unavailable because the TV lacks the app, the account lacks the necessary plan, the browser is unsupported, or the service is not offered in that region. Resolve those service and device prerequisites separately from Bluetooth pairing.

Features that may vary by connection

  • Input: Basic buttons and sticks commonly work over Bluetooth, USB-C, and Xbox Wireless when the game supports a controller.
  • Headsets: Headset audio and microphone behavior can differ by host and connection. Do not assume that Bluetooth pairing exposes every console accessory feature.
  • Button mapping: Xbox Accessories configuration on Windows requires the compatible app and USB-C cable described by Microsoft.
  • Firmware: Updating or managing firmware may require a supported Xbox console, Windows app, or wired connection.
  • Switching hosts: Microsoft advertises pairing with and switching between Xbox consoles, Windows PC, Android, and iOS, but the receiving device still needs its own compatible protocol and operating-system support.

Battery and power expectations

A 2020 Microsoft product listing states that AA batteries provide up to 40 hours of battery life. Microsoft qualifies that figure: actual life varies significantly with headset use, additional accessories, usage patterns, and other factors. Treat “up to” as a maximum from that listing, not a guaranteed runtime for every session or configuration.

When a controller disconnects unexpectedly, replace or recharge the batteries first, then test with USB-C. Wired operation can distinguish a power problem from Bluetooth interference or a host-compatibility problem.

Which controller should span console, PC, and mobile?

The precise product category to look for is Xbox Wireless Controller. Microsoft’s compatibility documentation covers the current model across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, Android, and iOS, making it the straightforward choice for those core platforms.

For a purchase, match the controller to the connection you will actually use:

  • Choose Bluetooth capability when phones, tablets, or a Bluetooth-equipped PC are central to your setup.
  • Plan on a data-capable USB-C cable for a desktop without Bluetooth, Windows configuration, or a reliable wired fallback.
  • For console play, verify Xbox Wireless compatibility and do not infer mobile Bluetooth support from an older Xbox One label.
  • For television play, select the TV and app first, then confirm that the exact controller revision is listed as a supported Bluetooth controller.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The controller pairs with the phone but not the game

Check the game’s controller-support documentation and in-game input menu. Close and reopen the game after pairing, disconnect other gamepads, and test a second supported title. Operating-system recognition does not guarantee that every game exposes controller input.

The PC sees the controller but buttons do nothing

Open the game’s controller settings, disable conflicting input layers if present, and reconnect by USB-C. If the controller works over USB but not Bluetooth, inspect the PC’s Bluetooth driver and adapter rather than the controller first.

The TV has Bluetooth but the Xbox app is missing

Bluetooth alone is insufficient. Confirm the TV model, operating-system version, app-store region, and Xbox app eligibility. A television can support Bluetooth accessories while lacking the Xbox app or the service required for cloud gaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote Play will not start

Verify the console’s remote features, sign-in profile, client operating-system version, controller connection, and network. Android must meet the listed 6.0-or-newer category, iOS the listed 15.1-or-newer category, and Windows the listed 22H2-or-newer category for the documented client requirements.
