The current standard Xbox Wireless Controller uses two replaceable AA batteries and can deliver up to 40 hours per set in Microsoft’s testing of preproduction units. A USB-C cable can provide wired play and data connectivity, but it does not recharge ordinary disposable or rechargeable AA cells inside the controller. To charge batteries through the controller, install a controller-specific rechargeable battery pack, such as Microsoft’s separately sold Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C.
This distinction explains most Xbox controller charging confusion: the USB-C port is both a wired data connection and a charging path for a compatible battery pack—not a charger for the AA compartment.

How long do Xbox controller batteries last?
Microsoft lists up to 40 hours of battery life from standard AA batteries for the current Xbox Design Lab controller specification. Microsoft identifies that figure as testing conducted on preproduction units, so it is a maximum test result rather than a guaranteed runtime for every player.

The controller’s standard battery compartment accepts two AA cells. You can use ordinary disposable alkaline AAs when you need the lowest-friction replacement, or rechargeable AA cells if you already own an external charger. Rechargeable AA cells remain separate batteries: the controller does not charge them through its USB-C port.
What “up to 40 hours” means
- Source: Microsoft’s current Xbox Design Lab controller specification.
- Test condition: Microsoft says the measurement came from testing preproduction units with standard AA batteries.
- Qualification: “Up to” describes a maximum observed under Microsoft’s test conditions, not a universal guarantee.
- Practical use: Plan for variation based on battery choice, accessories and play habits.
Can USB-C charge an Xbox controller?
Yes, but only when a compatible rechargeable battery pack is installed. A USB-C cable connected to the controller supports wired play and data communication with compatible devices. It does not recharge ordinary disposable AA batteries, and it does not recharge standard rechargeable AA cells sitting in the AA compartment.
Microsoft sells an Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C accessory separately. This type of pack is designed to fit the controller’s battery bay and accept charge through the controller’s USB-C connection. Without a controller-specific pack, plugging in USB-C gives you a wired connection while the AA cells remain untouched.

The cable itself does not change the battery hardware. A controller with AA cells remains an AA-powered controller until you replace those cells with a compatible rechargeable pack.

Which rechargeable options work?
Microsoft Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C
Microsoft identifies its Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C as a separately sold accessory for the controller. It is the most direct choice when you want in-controller charging: install the pack in place of the two AAs, then connect a USB-C cable whenever you need to recharge or play wired.
- The pack occupies the controller’s battery compartment.
- USB-C charging works through the controller once the compatible pack is installed.
- The same cable can support wired play while connected to an Xbox or compatible Windows device.
- The accessory is separate from the standard controller; buying a controller does not imply that a rechargeable pack is included.

PowerA describes its Xbox Play & Charge Kit as officially licensed and specifies two 1100mAh rechargeable batteries, four battery doors for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One controllers, and a 10-foot (3-meter) USB charging cable. The extra doors are relevant because battery-door shapes can differ between controller generations and models.

Check the model and battery door before ordering either type of pack. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers are closely related but do not use every door interchangeably. PowerA’s documentation explicitly addresses both generations; for any other pack, verify the manufacturer’s compatibility statement.

Rechargeable AA cells
Rechargeable AA cells are valid replacements for the controller’s standard batteries, but they follow a different workflow. Remove the cells and charge them in a separate AA charger. The controller’s USB-C port cannot send charge into those cells because they are not connected to a controller charging circuit.

This setup can make sense if you already use rechargeable AAs in other household devices. It is less convenient if you want to leave the cable connected and recharge without opening the battery door. Keep a charged spare pair available so you can swap cells while the depleted pair is in the external charger.
Can you use an Xbox controller wired without batteries?
A USB-C cable can connect the controller to a compatible Xbox or Windows device for wired play and data communication. A compatible wired connection can therefore be useful when the AA cells are depleted or removed. The controller does not need to be operating wirelessly for USB-C data to work.
For the most predictable result, use a USB-C cable that supports data rather than a cable intended only for charging another device. Microsoft lists a compatible USB-C cable as a Windows connection method. Cable length is a practical choice: a short cable suits a desk, while a longer cable is useful from a sofa. The available data specifies a 10-foot (3-meter) cable for the PowerA kit; no universal cable length is required for the controller itself.

Wired setup on an Xbox console
- Insert a compatible USB-C cable into the controller’s USB-C port.
- Connect the other end to a USB port on the Xbox console.
- Wait for the console to recognize the controller, then use it as a wired controller.
- If the controller does not respond, reseat both plugs and try another known-good data cable or console USB port.
Wired setup on Windows
- Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible USB-C data cable.
- Allow Windows and the game or Xbox software to detect the controller.
- If it is not recognized, disconnect other controller cables, try another USB port and test a cable confirmed to carry data.
- For wireless Windows play instead, Microsoft lists Bluetooth, a compatible USB-C cable or the Xbox Wireless Adapter as connection methods.
USB-C is not the only wireless option. The controller can connect to Xbox consoles, Windows, Android and iOS, with the exact pairing method depending on the device. A cable is often the simplest way to establish a reliable Windows connection or continue playing while a rechargeable pack is being replenished.

There is no single best arrangement; the right choice depends on whether you value the lowest immediate cost, in-controller charging, cable-free convenience or battery reuse across several devices.

For a rechargeable setup with the fewest extra steps, a controller-specific pack is generally easier than rechargeable AAs because charging happens in the controller. For the lowest initial outlay, standard AAs remain the simplest option. Exact retail prices are not established here and vary by region, retailer and promotion.

The controller works by cable but the batteries never charge
Check what is installed. If the compartment contains ordinary disposable AAs or standard rechargeable AAs, this behavior is expected: USB-C does not charge them. Replace them with a compatible controller rechargeable pack if you want in-controller charging, or remove rechargeable AAs and use their external charger.

The installed batteries may be depleted, incorrectly seated or absent. Reinsert two AA cells with the polarity marks aligned, or install a charged compatible pack. If you were relying on rechargeable AAs, charge them externally before testing wireless operation.

Windows does not detect the controller over USB-C
- Confirm that the cable supports data and is fully inserted at both ends.
- Try another USB port and, if available, another known-good data cable.
- Remove competing controller connections while testing.
- If wireless play is preferable, use Bluetooth or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, both listed by Microsoft as Windows connection methods.
The battery door does not fit after installing a pack
Do not force the door. Battery doors are model-specific. Verify whether the pack is intended for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One or both, and use the matching door supplied with the kit. PowerA’s documented kit includes four doors for those two Xbox generations; other products may not include replacements.
A charge-time number comes from an old Xbox 360 guide
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Play & Charge manual describes a full charge taking up to six hours with the Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit. That is historical Xbox 360 documentation. It should not be used as the charge-time specification for current Xbox Series controllers or their rechargeable packs.
What to check before buying a cable or battery pack
- Controller generation: Confirm whether your controller is an Xbox Series X|S model, an Xbox One model or another generation.
- Battery design: Decide between ordinary AAs, rechargeable AAs with an external charger and a controller-specific rechargeable pack.
- Charging method: In-controller charging requires a compatible pack; USB-C alone is not enough.
- Cable function: For wired play and Windows data, choose a compatible USB-C data cable.
- Cable reach: Measure the distance from your seating position or desk to the console or PC.
- Door fit: Verify that the battery door matches the controller and that replacement doors are included when needed.
- Runtime expectations: Use Microsoft’s up-to-40-hour AA figure as a qualified maximum, not a guarantee for every battery and usage pattern.
- Regional availability: Accessory stock, packaging and current prices can differ by country and retailer.
The practical answer in one decision
If you want to keep using the controller wirelessly with minimal change, install two AA batteries. If those batteries are rechargeable AAs, charge them in an external charger. If you want to plug in one cable and recharge without opening the battery compartment, use a compatible Xbox rechargeable battery pack. If you only need reliable play or PC setup, a compatible USB-C data cable can run the controller wired—even when no battery pack is installed—but the cable does not transform the AA compartment into a charger.
