What is reportedly changing—and when?
Windows Central reports that Microsoft emailed people who had used the Xbox app on a 2020 Samsung Smart TV to say support for those TVs will end on November 3, 2026. The reported notice says users can continue playing on newer Samsung TVs from 2021 onward and on other supported devices. It describes a change to app support on a particular TV generation, not an end to Xbox Cloud Gaming across all devices.

The email reportedly attributes the cutoff to updates to the technology powering Xbox Cloud Gaming that are no longer compatible with the operating system version available on the affected TV models. The report provides no more detailed technical explanation. It also does not establish why Microsoft chose to make the change, so speculation about costs or usage should not be treated as Microsoft’s stated rationale.

Why the public compatibility information is confusing
Xbox’s TV compatibility page currently lists select Samsung Smart TVs from 2020 onward. Samsung’s Xbox app listing, updated May 27, 2026, also does not announce the reported cutoff. Those public listings do not match the reported email’s November 3 end date for 2020 sets.

Because the public pages do not confirm the reported change, the precise support status remains unsettled in the information available. Check your model number against Xbox’s current guidance and look for any direct notice from Microsoft before relying on continued access or replacing equipment.
Xbox Cloud Gaming options for a compatible TV
Xbox lists several TV and streaming-device routes, although support depends on the exact model, operating system, region, plan, and game. Its current page names these options:

- A supported TV or streaming device: The Xbox app must be available for that exact model and region. A streaming device can be an alternative when connected to a compatible television, provided the streaming device itself is supported.
- A compatible controller: Xbox requires a compatible controller for TV play. Its LG setup guidance gives examples of Bluetooth wireless controllers: Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, PlayStation DualSense, and DualShock 4. Compatibility does not restore app support on a TV once that support has ended.
- A suitable connection: Xbox recommends 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data for best performance. Actual results depend on the connection and device.
- An eligible plan and game: Xbox says an active Game Pass subscription is required for most cloud-play games, with some exceptions. The catalog and cloud-play limits can vary by plan; check the current Xbox terms for your location.
Does this mean Xbox Cloud Gaming is shutting down?
No such broad shutdown is established by the reported notice. It concerns the Xbox app on 2020 Samsung TVs, while Xbox continues to list other supported TV and device routes. Microsoft has also announced expansion of the app to select LG and VIDAA/V homeOS-powered TVs in separate updates: Xbox app on select LG TVs and Xbox app on select VIDAA-powered TVs.

Microsoft reported that Xbox Cloud Gaming players streamed 140 million hours from October through December 2024. That figure, published by Microsoft Developer in March 2025, indicates service use during that period; it does not explain the reported Samsung support decision.
