Xbox Series X|S runs most Xbox One games and a selected catalogue of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Compatibility is decided per game, not per console generation: a game must be in Xbox’s supported catalogue, and your ownership format must match the console.
Backward compatibility does not cost extra for games you already own. Series X can use supported discs; Series S has no disc drive and therefore requires digital ownership. Downloads are required, and enhancements such as higher resolution, faster frame rates, improved textures, HDR or Auto HDR vary by title.

What Xbox backward compatibility actually means
Backward compatibility is Microsoft’s system for running selected older games on newer Xbox hardware. The Series X and Series S share the same broad compatibility software, but their physical-media capabilities differ. Most Xbox One games work on both consoles. Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is limited to a curated catalogue, so an older game is not automatically playable simply because it was released for an Xbox console.
A compatible game is delivered as a version that runs on the newer system. It may retain the original game code, use an emulator, or receive title-specific enhancements. It is not necessarily a modern remaster, and compatibility does not guarantee that every online, marketplace, achievement or save feature from the original release survives.

Compatibility by game generation
| Game generation | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Most games are playable, digitally or from supported discs. | Most games are playable digitally. | Compatibility is still title-specific. A physical Xbox One copy requires a disc drive, which Series S does not have. |
| Xbox 360 | Only titles in the selected backward-compatible catalogue; digital ownership or a supported disc. | Only titles in the selected catalogue; digital ownership is required. | Physical discs are used as ownership checks on Series X, while the playable game is downloaded to the console. |
| Original Xbox | Only titles in the selected backward-compatible catalogue; digital ownership or a supported disc. | Only titles in the selected catalogue; digital ownership is required. | These are emulated versions of the original releases, with limits on original Xbox Live, marketplaces, achievements and direct save transfer. |
The safest way to verify a specific game is to check its entry in the official Xbox backward-compatibility catalogue before buying a disc or expecting an old save to work.
How to check whether a particular game works
- Identify the game’s generation. Confirm whether the copy is an Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox release. Different editions, add-ons and regional releases can have different support.
- Check the official catalogue entry. A game must be listed as backward compatible; a console’s ability to run one title from a generation does not imply support for every title from that generation.
- Match the ownership format to the console. Digital purchases can be used on either Series model when the title is supported. A physical copy needs Series X, because Series S cannot read discs.
- Read the feature notes. Look for any listed resolution, frame-rate, texture, HDR or Auto HDR enhancement and note whether multiplayer or other features are retained.
- Plan for a download. Even when a disc is accepted, the console installs a downloadable version to its internal storage. Make sure you have enough space and a connection capable of completing the download.
Digital ownership: what happens on Series X|S
When you own a compatible digital game, sign in to the Xbox account that owns it. The title appears in the console’s Ready to Install section when the account and console meet the compatibility requirements. Select it to download the supported version.
The same principle applies to digital purchases from Xbox 360 and original Xbox generations that are in the catalogue. You do not pay a separate backward-compatibility fee for a game you already own. The entitlement is what matters; the console still has to download the current playable package.

Physical discs: Series X versus Series S
Using a supported disc on Series X
Insert the supported Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc into Series X. The console uses the disc to verify ownership and downloads the compatible game to its hard drive. The disc must remain in the drive whenever you play, even after installation; it functions as the licence check rather than as the complete playable installation.
The disc itself does not turn an unsupported game into a compatible one. If the title is not in the catalogue, Series X cannot use backward compatibility to run it.
Why a physical copy cannot work on Series S
Series S is digital-only and has no optical disc drive. It cannot read an Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc, so a physical copy cannot be converted into playable ownership on that console under the normal system. You need a supported digital entitlement instead.

Xbox said the trial would begin with thousands of titles and expand, but not every title would be available at launch.

This is a changing Insider feature, not a blanket rule for every disc or every console. Check the current eligibility information before relying on it, especially if you plan to use a disc-derived entitlement on a disc-free Series S. Do not assume that an eligible test title can be played without the disc unless the current programme terms explicitly say so.
What enhancements can you expect?
Enhancement support is set per game. Depending on the title, Xbox may provide a higher resolution, faster frame rate, improved textures, HDR or Auto HDR. A game can receive one improvement, several, or none. The console must download the compatible package before those changes appear.
Original Xbox games remain emulated versions of their original releases rather than full remakes. Sharper output or Auto HDR can improve presentation, but the underlying game design, controls and content remain those of the supported release. Xbox’s official catalogue says that more than 500,000 hours were spent testing titles and meeting Xbox Series X|S quality standards; that figure describes the catalogue’s testing effort, not a promise that every game receives the same visual upgrade.
Use the catalogue’s individual feature notes when deciding whether an older game will benefit from running on modern hardware. Do not infer a 4K mode, 60-frame-per-second mode or HDR support from the console model alone.

Saves and progression
Original Xbox saves
Original Xbox save files do not transfer directly to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. A save stored on the original console therefore cannot simply be copied into the newer system’s backward-compatible version.
Xbox One and Series-family cloud transfer
Saves made on Xbox One or Series X|S can transfer to other consoles within those families through the cloud. This is useful when moving between an Xbox One and a Series console, or between two Series consoles, provided the game supports the relevant save system and the consoles use the same account.
For any older title, confirm the save behavior before deleting the original installation or console. Compatibility of the game and compatibility of its save data are separate questions.

Online play, local multiplayer and achievements
Original Xbox Live online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable in the backward-compatible versions. A game that once depended on those original services cannot recreate them on Series X|S.

Offline co-op, local multiplayer and system-link play can work when the original game supported those modes and the compatible version preserves them. Support is therefore mode-specific: the presence of a local option does not restore the discontinued online service.
Original Xbox backward-compatible games do not have Xbox achievements. Do not expect a new achievement list simply because the game is running on a modern console.
Cost, hardware and download requirements
- No separate compatibility charge: supported games you already own do not require an extra backward-compatibility purchase.
- Series X: supports digital ownership and supported physical discs. A disc must stay inserted during play after the game is downloaded.
- Series S: supports digital ownership only. Physical Xbox discs cannot be used.
- Storage: the playable package is installed on the console’s drive, including when a disc supplied the ownership check.
- Account access: digital games appear under the account that owns them, including in Ready to Install.
- Catalogue status: Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is selective, so verify the exact title before buying or installing.
Troubleshooting common problems
The disc is not recognised
- Confirm that the exact game is listed as backward compatible.
- Check that you are using Series X; Series S cannot read any disc.
- Try the disc again after cleaning it and restarting the console.
- Remember that a disc is an ownership key; the game still has to download its supported package.
The game is missing from Ready to Install
- Sign out and back in with the account that purchased the game.
- Check whether the specific edition or bundle is supported rather than relying on the franchise name.
- Verify the current catalogue listing; Xbox 360 and original Xbox compatibility is not universal.
The game looks unchanged
Enhancements are optional and title-specific. If the catalogue does not list higher resolution, frame rate, textures, HDR or Auto HDR for that game, the console may be running the compatible version without those features. A required download must also finish before enhancements are available.

An old save is unavailable
Original Xbox saves cannot be transferred directly to Series X|S. For Xbox One and Series-family saves, use the same account and allow cloud synchronisation to complete before switching consoles.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before you buy or install
- Write down the exact game title, edition and generation.
- Look it up in the official Xbox backward-compatibility catalogue.
- Choose Series X if your ownership is a physical disc; choose Series S only when you have digital ownership.
- Check the catalogue notes for enhancements and multiplayer limitations.
- Plan for a full download and adequate storage, even when you own the disc.
- Confirm save-transfer expectations before replacing the original console.
- If you are relying on the 2026 Insider disc-to-digital test, verify that the title and your account are currently eligible.
