Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility is free for games you own, but it is title-specific. Most Xbox One games run on both consoles, while only selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games are supported. Digital purchases install from your library; compatible discs download the game but must stay in the drive to verify your license. Because Xbox Series S is digital-only, physical backward-compatible discs require an Xbox Series X.
Microsoft’s backward-compatibility program carries selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles onto Xbox Series X|S and supports most Xbox One games. It does not make every release from an older generation playable automatically. The authoritative way to check a particular game is Microsoft’s Xbox Backward Compatible Games catalog, which includes filters and an excluded-games view.

What backward compatibility covers
The program combines three generations, with different levels of coverage:

|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Most games | Most Xbox One releases are playable, but Microsoft does not promise every title. Check the catalog for the exact game. |
| Xbox 360 | Selected games | Only games included in Microsoft’s backward-compatible catalog work. Eligibility is per title. |
| Original Xbox | Selected games | Catalog support is limited, and Original Xbox online services, in-game marketplaces and achievements have additional restrictions. |
Compatibility follows the individual game rather than the console generation alone. Two Xbox 360 games released in the same year can have different statuses, and an Xbox One game should still be checked if it is important to your library. The catalog’s filters are useful when you want to browse by platform or find excluded titles instead of searching one game at a time.

Series X versus Series S for old games
Xbox Series X: the disc-friendly option
Series X can run eligible digital games and has the physical-disc capability needed for compatible Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs. If you own an older game on disc and do not also have a digital license, Series X is the relevant current console. Inserting an eligible disc starts a download to the console’s storage; the disc remains the license check and must be in the drive whenever you play.
Xbox Series S: digital-only
Series S has no physical-disc capability. Its backward-compatible library is therefore limited to digital games you own or can obtain digitally. An eligible Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc cannot be used directly on Series S, even though the same title might be supported on Series X. A disc owner would need Series X or a digital copy of the game.

| Compatible Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc | Insert disc, download, keep disc inserted to play | Cannot use the disc; digital ownership is required |
| Title not in the catalog | Not playable through backward compatibility | Not playable through backward compatibility |
How to check whether a specific game works
- Open Microsoft’s official backward-compatibility catalog.
- Search for the exact game name and, where relevant, select the platform filter for Xbox One, Xbox 360 or Original Xbox.
- Confirm that the listing is the edition you own. A game title can have separate releases, and compatibility is attached to the listed title rather than to a broad franchise name.
- If you cannot find it, use the catalog’s excluded-games view and check the title spelling, platform and edition before assuming that the console is malfunctioning.
- Check the ownership format. A catalog listing confirms compatibility, but a Series S still requires a digital license because it cannot read discs.
Microsoft’s page says that Series X|S backward compatibility is free and lets owners play select Xbox 360, Original Xbox and Xbox One games they already own. That means you do not buy a separate “backward-compatible” version when your license is eligible.

Installing a digital backward-compatible game
When your account owns an eligible digital game, it appears in the console’s Ready to Install section. Select the game there and begin the installation. The console identifies the license through your account, so no older disc is needed for a digital entitlement. The same process applies to digital games on Series X and Series S, provided the title is in the compatibility catalog.

If a game does not appear, verify the account that purchased it, search the catalog for the exact title and confirm that the game is not excluded. A missing listing is different from a failed download: the catalog determines whether the title is supported in the first place.
Installing and playing a compatible disc
- Insert the Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc into the Series X drive.
- Let the console recognize the title and start downloading the compatible game to internal storage.
- Wait for the installation to finish before launching it.
- Keep the original disc in the drive whenever you play. The installed files are used for gameplay, while the disc verifies that you own the physical license.
The disc does not turn a Series S into a disc console. On Series S, the same title must be owned digitally. On Series X, removing the disc after installation will prevent the game from starting because the license check can no longer succeed.
Do backward-compatible games look or run better?
Some supported titles receive technical enhancements, but they are not automatic for every game. Microsoft lists several possible improvements:
- FPS Boost: selected games can run at a higher frame rate than on their original hardware.
- Higher resolution: some titles can reach resolutions up to 4K, depending on the game and the enhancement profile.
- Improved textures: supported games may use cleaner or more detailed texture presentation.
- Auto HDR: compatible titles can gain high-dynamic-range output on a suitable display.
These options vary by title and should be treated as enhancements to the original game, not as a guarantee of a full remaster. A game can be backward-compatible without receiving FPS Boost, a 4K output mode, texture work or Auto HDR. The catalog and the game’s own supported features are the appropriate references for what you will actually see.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Enhancements also do not change the underlying content into a new release. Menus, missions, controls and other game-specific behavior remain tied to the original title unless Microsoft’s compatibility work changes a technical behavior.
What happens to your saves?
Xbox One saves
Saves created on Xbox One can transfer between Xbox One and Series X|S through the cloud. Saves created on Series X|S can likewise move between those newer consoles through cloud synchronization. This is the practical path for continuing an Xbox One campaign after changing consoles: use the same account and allow the cloud save to synchronize.
Original Xbox saves
Original Xbox game saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. A compatible Original Xbox title therefore starts without the old console’s save data when you move generations. This limitation is separate from whether the game itself can launch.

Offline and local multiplayer
Offline multiplayer, local co-op and system-link features remain available when the original game supported those modes. The exact experience depends on the game’s own design, so check whether the mode you want was part of the original release.
Achievements
Original Xbox games do not add Xbox achievements. This is another distinction between launching an older game and receiving a modernized edition with a new achievement list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why compatibility is selective
Microsoft’s catalog represents a technical and licensing selection rather than a simple hardware switch. The company says it performed 500,000 hours of testing and quality work for Series X|S gameplay. That figure describes testing effort, not the number of compatible games. Individual titles still depend on whether they appear in the catalog, and older online services or marketplace functions may remain unavailable even when the game runs.

Common situations and the right answer
“I own an Xbox One game digitally.”
If the title is supported, it should be available in Ready to Install on Series X|S. Most Xbox One games work, but confirm the exact release in the catalog rather than assuming every Xbox One game qualifies.
“I own an Xbox 360 disc and want to use Series S.”
The disc cannot be read by Series S. You need a digital license or a Series X, which has the drive required for the physical-license check.
“I own an Original Xbox disc.”
First confirm that the title is in the selected Original Xbox catalog. On Series X, insert the disc to trigger the download and leave it inserted for play. On Series S, the disc is unusable without a digital copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“The game launches, but its old online marketplace is missing.”
That is expected for Original Xbox titles: backward compatibility does not restore Original Xbox online multiplayer services or in-game marketplaces. Use the supported offline, local co-op or system-link modes when the game provides them.
“My old save is not there.”
Original Xbox saves do not transfer to Series X|S. Xbox One and Series X|S saves can transfer through the cloud when they were created on those supported generations and the same account is used.
A practical buying decision
- Choose Series X if your library includes compatible Xbox 360 or Original Xbox discs, or if keeping physical ownership usable matters.
- Choose Series S if your older library is digital and you are comfortable with a digital-only console.
- Check every important game in Microsoft’s catalog before buying either console, especially for Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles.
- Do not pay for a separate compatibility upgrade when you already own an eligible license; the program itself is free.
Backward compatibility is best understood as a supported catalog with optional per-game enhancements, not a promise that every Xbox release follows you to the next console. Confirm the title, confirm the ownership format and then choose the console whose media support matches your library.
