A persistent software mod for some Xbox 360 consoles has emerged in the console’s 20th-anniversary year. The project, Xbox360PeerPressure, supports specific motherboard revisions—not every Xbox 360—and carries a real risk of data loss or a console that will not boot. It is also different from Bad Update, an older software exploit that must be triggered again after the console restarts.
Does the Xbox 360 have a softmod?
Yes. Xbox360PeerPressure documents a persistent softmod for a subset of Xbox 360 motherboard revisions. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005, making 2025 its 20th-anniversary year; that timing does not establish that the mod itself was released on the anniversary date. Xbox 360 launch history.

“Persistent” distinguishes Peer Pressure from a temporary hacked state: the project says its modifications remain in place rather than ending when the console is switched off or restarted. That persistence involves changes to the console’s NAND image and hard-drive security sectors, so this is not a risk-free software tweak.
Which Xbox 360 models can be softmodded?
Peer Pressure lists support for these motherboard revisions:
#1 Best Overall
- Xenon
- Zephyr
- Falcon
- Jasper
- Trinity
It excludes Corona and Winchester revisions because the southbridge has a hardware-level fix that blocks this approach. The project’s compatibility list is specific to its method; it should not be read as a claim that every console in a listed family will be suitable regardless of condition or setup. Check the project documentation against the exact console before proceeding: Xbox360PeerPressure documentation.
What does Peer Pressure require, and what can go wrong?
The project requires a hard drive and recommends a mechanical 2.5-inch drive. Its method relies on a timing-sensitive race while reading HDD security sectors; the documentation says some SSDs may work, but does not recommend them. It also lists a USB stick as a requirement. No particular retail drive model is certified, so confirm the connector and physical fit for the console and verify the exact revision before buying hardware.

The project warns that changing NAND and HDD security sectors could cause data loss or prevent the console from booting. Recovery may require a hardware NAND flasher. Its README states: “This softmod exploit will make modifications to your console’s NAND image and HDD security sectors which could cause data loss and/or prevent your console from booting.” Treat that as a project warning, not a guarantee that recovery will be straightforward.

How is Peer Pressure different from Bad Update?
Bad Update is another software-only Xbox 360 exploit, but it is explicitly non-persistent. Its documentation says the hacked state ends on reboot or power-off, so the user must trigger it again after restarting. The repository describes it as a proof of concept, not an RGH replacement. It is documented for dashboard 17559.
| Method | Persistence | Compatibility documented | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox360PeerPressure | Presented as persistent | Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper, and Trinity; Corona and Winchester excluded | Requires a hard drive; changes NAND image and HDD security sectors, with stated data-loss and no-boot risks |
| Bad Update | Not persistent; must be triggered again after reboot or power-off | Dashboard 17559 | Repository calls it a proof of concept rather than an RGH replacement; author documentation claims a 30% success rate and up to 20 minutes, not independently verified |
Sources: Peer Pressure project documentation and Bad Update project documentation. The 30% and up-to-20-minute figures are the Bad Update repository author’s stated performance claims, not Peer Pressure results or independent test findings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a persistent Xbox 360 softmod worth attempting?
That depends on the exact motherboard revision and whether you are prepared for the possibility of data loss or a console that will not boot. A compatible revision and recommended drive do not eliminate the documented recovery risk. If you cannot identify the board revision or recover a failed NAND modification, do not treat the procedure as a routine settings change; review the project’s current instructions and risks first.
