The practical difference is that X documents several upload routes and a profile media timeline, while Bluesky’s protocol tutorial explains how image files are uploaded as blobs and referenced by posts.
At a glance: posting limits are not storage quotas
| What you want to know | X | Bluesky |
|---|---|---|
| Photos in one post | Up to four total media items, including photos, GIFs, and videos. X Help: posting photos or GIFs and X Help: How to Post | Up to four images, each up to 2 MB, according to Bluesky’s image-posting tutorial. Bluesky Protocol Services: Creating a post |
| Video uploads | Limits vary by account tier and upload route; the general video help page lists non-Premium uploads up to 140 seconds and 512 MB. X Help: sharing and watching videos | The reviewed tutorial establishes image rules, not a comparable general video-upload limit. The cited material does not state one. |
| Finding posted media | A profile’s media timeline shows photos, videos, and GIFs attached to posts. X Help: media timelines in profiles | The protocol tutorial describes post records and blob references, not a user-facing archive guarantee. The cited material does not state one. |
| Account-wide storage quota or retention promise | Not stated in the cited X documentation; a timeline or Media Studio library is not a backup guarantee. | Not stated in the cited Bluesky documentation; a blob reference or choice of PDS does not establish a universal quota or indefinite retention. |
How much video can I upload to X?
There is no single limit to apply to every X upload route. X’s general video help page lists non-Premium uploads of up to 140 seconds and 512 MB. It describes longer uploads for Premium accounts, but the limits depend on the surface and the help pages do not all give the same maximum. Check X’s video help page for the route and account tier that apply.

Media Studio has separate rules
X’s Media Studio Library page specifies a maximum video file size of 8 GB under that feature’s upload rules. X explicitly says those directions do not apply to desktop, mobile, or API uploads, so the Media Studio figure should not be treated as a universal X limit. X Help: Media Studio Library

Some X video documentation describes Premium uploads of less than four hours and up to 16 GB for certain uploads, while Premium and Media Studio pages describe roughly three hours and up to 8 GB on specified surfaces. Because these figures are surface-specific, use the instructions shown for the upload route you intend to use rather than combining them into one limit.

How many photos can I put in a Bluesky post?
Bluesky’s protocol tutorial says a post can include up to four images, with a maximum of 2 MB per image. That is a per-image posting limit in the cited tutorial—not a total account storage allowance. Bluesky Protocol Services: Creating a post
X also permits up to four total media items in a post. Its Help Center describes posting photos and GIFs, and its general posting guidance sets the four-item attachment maximum. The figure is a per-post attachment limit, not a storage quota. X Help: posting photos or GIFs · X Help: How to Post

Does Bluesky store images in the post?
Not as image bytes embedded directly in the post record, according to Bluesky’s protocol tutorial. The image file is uploaded as a blob, and the post record references that blob. This explains how a post points to an image; it does not establish how long the image will be retained or how much total storage an account has.

Bluesky accounts are hosted on Personal Data Servers (PDSs). The AT Protocol Team’s account-management documentation describes a model that allows different hosting arrangements, including independent or self-hosted options. That choice alone does not prove a fixed storage quota, a retention duration, or effortless migration of every item. AT Protocol Team: Network Account Management

Where do my old photos go on X?
X’s profile media timeline displays photos, videos, and GIFs attached to posts. If you delete a post, its media is removed from that timeline. This is a way to browse media associated with posts on a profile; X’s documentation does not describe it as a personal archive or backup. X Help: media timelines in profiles

An attachment cap answers how much media a post can contain. A file-size or duration limit answers what a particular upload route accepts. Neither number tells you the total amount an account may store or guarantees that an upload will remain available indefinitely.

- On X: the profile media timeline and Media Studio library help users find posted or library media, but the cited pages do not promise account-wide backup or permanent retention.
- On Bluesky: a post’s reference to a blob and the account’s PDS hosting arrangement explain parts of the data model, but the cited pages do not establish a universal quota or retention guarantee.
The official materials cited here do not provide directly comparable account-wide storage quotas or a shared long-term retention policy for X and Bluesky. Treat both services as places to share media, not as substitutes for a separate backup unless you have verified the specific preservation terms and workflow you need.
