How far away should you stay?
Distance is the first decision, before lens choice or composition. NOAA Fisheries’ general U.S. marine-life viewing guidance recommends staying at least 50 yards from sea turtles, whether they are on land or in the water. NOAA’s Hawaiʻi guidance instead recommends at least 10 feet (3 meters) on land and in water. Follow the rules for the exact beach, park, protected area, or tour, including any stricter posted direction.

Use zoom instead of moving closer
Once you are at a permitted viewing distance, compose the image from where you stand. NOAA Hawaiʻi recommends using binoculars or camera zoom for a closer view. A telephoto lens can help with framing, but it is not a reason to close the gap. Avoid selfies, staged interactions, or any setup that puts the turtle or its route at risk.

If a turtle approaches you
Do not follow it, touch it, feed it, or try to prompt a reaction for a picture. Hold your position or withdraw calmly so it has space to continue past you. Do not swim after it or block its path. NOAA warns that disturbance can cause a nesting turtle to abandon her attempt and return to the water.
Photographing from a boat
Keep a generous distance and move predictably. NOAA advises boaters to use no-wake speed, avoid sudden changes, and not chase, encircle, or trap a turtle. If you see one, put the engine in neutral, let it pass, and move away slowly. Do not maneuver for a better angle if doing so would bring the vessel closer or restrict the turtle’s movement. At a nesting beach after dark
Keep back and do not crowd or block a nesting turtle. Avoid visible light on the beach: NOAA advises turning off, shielding, or redirecting lights visible from the shoreline because they can disorient hatchlings and discourage nesting females from coming ashore. Observe any beach closure and local nesting-season instructions; if photography would require approaching, illuminating, or obstructing the turtle, do not take the shot. Why the rules matter
NOAA Fisheries says all sea turtles found in the United States are listed under the Endangered Species Act and that harassment or harm is prohibited. NOAA also cautions against approaching, touching, swimming with, or trying to elicit a reaction from wild turtles.
