Install X.Org and Xwayland security fixes through your Linux distribution, then follow the restart or reboot instructions in the security notice for your exact package and release. Upstream X.Org advisories identify affected components and fixed upstream versions, but your distribution’s notice is the authority for its package: it may ship a security fix as a backport without adopting the same upstream version number.
Where do I get X.Org security patches?
Get X.Org binaries from your operating system or Linux distribution’s supported package system—not by replacing distribution-managed files with an upstream source build. X.Org provides source releases rather than binaries and directs users to their operating system or distribution for X binaries. See the X.Org guidance on getting the X Window System.

That distinction matters because distributions package, maintain, and identify updates for their own releases. Use the distribution’s normal update mechanism and its security advisories to establish whether the package installed on your system is fixed.

How do I know if my X.Org version is affected?
Check both the upstream advisory and the security notice for your distribution and release. The upstream notice describes the vulnerability, affected components, and upstream fixed versions; the distribution notice tells you how that issue applies to its package versions and supported releases.

X.Org components are released separately rather than as one unified X Window System release. A notice may concern xorg-server, Xwayland, libXfont2, libXpm, or another module. Start with the component named in the notice, not just a general “X.Org version.” The X.Org security advisory index also warns that advisories are arranged by the most recent release they affect, while older releases may be affected too. Read the advisory’s affected-version scope instead of assuming an older branch is safe.
Do not compare version strings mechanically. A distribution can backport a fix to an older-looking package version, so an installed version that is numerically below the upstream fixed version is not by itself proof that the distribution package remains vulnerable. Ubuntu, for example, documents security fixes delivered through backports for supported releases; check the notice for your precise Ubuntu release and package. Other distributions should be checked through their own advisories.

What the current upstream version numbers mean
The X.Org security index, checked on October 7, 2026, listed July 8, 2026 advisories stating fixes for X server issues in upstream xorg-server 21.1.24 and Xwayland 24.1.13. It also listed July 2026 libXfont2 fixes at 2.0.8. These are upstream fixed-version references, not universal instructions to install those literal versions: your distribution may use different package versions or backport the fix. Check the live advisory and your distribution notice before acting.

Does my Linux distribution backport X.Org security fixes?
Backporting means applying a security fix to a package maintained for a distribution release without necessarily moving it to the corresponding upstream version number. Ubuntu explicitly documents this practice for supported releases in its security notices and guidance. That is not evidence that every distribution uses the same versioning or backport policy; consult the vendor’s notice for your own release.

When comparing update sources, keep the component, operating-system release, package version, and support status in view. A fixed upstream release and a fixed distribution package are different claims. Also confirm that your operating-system release and the relevant package component still receive security maintenance; support windows can vary by release and component.

There is no universal rule that every X.Org patch requires a full-machine reboot. Follow the completion instructions in the security notice for the specific package and distribution. If it calls for a reboot, plan one; if it specifies a service or session restart, follow that instruction instead. Do not infer a rule for all Linux systems from one distribution’s guidance.
Rank #4
For a concrete Ubuntu example, Canonical’s USN-7846-1, published October 29, 2025 and covering xorg-server and Xwayland, instructed users: “After a standard system update you need to reboot your computer to make all the necessary changes.” That instruction applies to that notice and its Ubuntu update, not automatically to every X.Org package update or other distribution.
Ubuntu’s separate Livepatch guidance says live kernel patching does not remove reboot requirements when upgrading to a newer kernel and advises following reboot guidance when a software component requires it. It is general Ubuntu operational advice, not a claim that X.Org updates always require rebooting.

What should I do if X stops working after an update?
- Confirm what you are running. Note your distribution, release, and updated package. Determine whether your desktop session uses Xorg directly or Xwayland under Wayland, since the relevant component may differ.
- Check the matching security notice. Compare the component and package for your release with the distribution’s advisory; use the upstream X.Org advisory to understand the issue and its affected-version scope.
- Complete the prescribed restart. Apply the reboot, service restart, or session restart specified by that notice. Do not substitute an assumption based on another distribution.
- Inspect the X server log if available. The usual log path identified in the X.Org FAQ is
/var/log/Xorg.0.log. Distribution builds may differ, so consult your distribution’s support material if that file is absent or does not explain the failure. - Use distribution support for distribution packages. The X.Org FAQ advises users of distribution builds to consult their distribution’s FAQ. Avoid manually replacing managed system files with upstream builds as a first recovery step.
