X added a public Bookmark count to posts on March 16, 2023. The number shows how many times a post has been saved, but it does not reveal which accounts saved it. X’s current Help Center says anyone on X can see the aggregate count, with availability currently listed for iOS.
What the bookmark number means
X defines the metric plainly: “Bookmark counts show the total number of times a post has been bookmarked.” It is a cumulative total of save actions on that post, not a list of people who saved it and not a count of unique users. If one person bookmarks the same post more than once, the displayed total may reflect multiple bookmark actions.

The count is an engagement signal showing that viewers chose to keep a post for later. It does not, by itself, explain why they saved it or whether they later returned to the post.

| Date | Product event |
|---|---|
| February 28, 2018 | Twitter introduced Bookmarks as a save-for-later feature. The launch announcement said that only the user who created a bookmark could see what they had saved. |
| March 16, 2023 | X’s official product timeline recorded the feature update allowing users to see the total number of times a post had been bookmarked. |
Can you see who bookmarked a post?
No. X says: “We only show the total number of Bookmarks, not the specific accounts that have added a post to their Bookmarks.” The public interface exposes an aggregate number only.

That privacy boundary also applies in X’s developer documentation. Bookmarks are private to the authenticated user who created them, and the documented bookmark endpoints let that user view, add, or remove their own saved posts. A public count therefore does not provide access to the underlying bookmark list.
Who can see the count, and where?
The current X Help Center says all posts have Bookmark counts, that anyone on X can see them, and that counts are currently available on iOS. Device support is a changeable product detail, so Android and web availability should be checked against the Help Center at the time you use the feature.

How bookmarks differ from other post metrics
| Metric | What it represents | What viewers can identify |
|---|---|---|
| Bookmarks | Saves intended for later reference | Aggregate total only; the saving accounts remain undisclosed |
| Likes | A positive reaction to a post | The platform may expose a public total and, depending on the interface, accounts associated with the reaction |
| Replies | Direct conversation attached to the post | The replying account and reply text are part of the conversation |
| Reposts | Redistribution of the post to another timeline | The reposting account can be visible through repost activity |
| Impressions or views | How often the post was displayed or viewed, according to the metric’s definition | A total exposure number, not a list of every viewer |
A bookmark is consequently closer to a private filing action than to a public endorsement. A high count can indicate that people found a post worth keeping, but it cannot identify those people or establish their later behavior.
Do bookmarks increase reach on X?
The official material establishing Bookmark counts does not publish a usage-rate benchmark or causal evidence that bookmarks improve ranking, recommendations, impressions, or distribution. Treat the number as an observed save total, not proof that X will amplify the post.
Creators can still use the metric descriptively: a post with many bookmarks may contain information readers want to revisit. That interpretation is different from claiming that the bookmarks directly trigger additional reach.

What changed—and what did not
- Changed: X made the total number of bookmark actions a public post metric.
- Unchanged: The saved-post list and the identities behind it remain private to the users who created those bookmarks.
- Still limited: The count does not show unique bookmarkers, reasons for saving, repeat visits, or a confirmed ranking effect.
