Instagram came out publicly on October 6, 2010, when it launched in Apple’s App Store. Founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger had posted test photos months earlier, but those July 2010 experiments were not a public release.
Instagram’s official launch date
Instagram first became publicly available on October 6, 2010. Contemporary launch coverage described the App Store release as Instagram’s official launch, and a later account by Inc. said Kevin Systrom opened the app to the public through Apple’s App Store control panel just after midnight that day.
The date refers to Instagram’s initial public availability on Apple devices. It does not refer to the founders’ earlier private testing.
What happened before the launch?
July 2010: private testing
TIME reported that the founders were posting experimental photos on July 16, 2010, when the project was still known as Codename. Kevin Systrom’s early test photo is sometimes cited as evidence that Instagram existed in July, but the app was not yet available to the public.

From Burbn to Instagram
Instagram grew out of Burbn, a broader location-based mobile project. Systrom and Krieger narrowed Burbn to its most promising features—mobile photo sharing, comments and likes—and developed those capabilities into Instagram.
What Instagram was like at launch
The first version focused on taking and sharing photos from a phone. Its defining features included photo filters and a simple way to post images for other people to see. Systrom described the original ambition as making Instagram a way to share your life while on the go, rather than merely another photo-sharing app.

How quickly did Instagram grow?
- According to Systrom’s later recollection reported by Inc., Instagram had more than 10,000 users within hours of launch. That figure is a retrospective founder estimate, not an independently audited count.
- Inc.’s 2012 account also reported 100,000 downloads by the end of Instagram’s first week.
These figures describe the early iPhone-era service and should not be confused with later user totals after Instagram expanded.

Earlier dates usually refer to internal testing or the founders’ experimental posts. July 2010 is therefore part of Instagram’s development history, while October 6, 2010, is the correct answer for its public App Store debut.
