If your Wowza-to-YouTube broadcast does not resume after a reconnect, check the two connections separately: first the encoder-to-Wowza incoming stream, then Wowza’s outgoing YouTube stream target. An encoder reporting that it reconnected does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving video. Use the status in Wowza and the preview in YouTube Live Control Room to locate the failed link.
1. Check whether Wowza is receiving the encoder
- In Wowza Streaming Engine, open the application’s Incoming Streams view. Find the expected stream and check that its status is Active. The stream detail view can also show uptime and throughput.
- If the stream is missing or inactive, check the encoder’s application name and stream name, server and port, and any source username and password required by the application.
- Wowza says RTMP and RTSP-based encoders require source authentication by default. Check the credentials carefully: they are case-sensitive. The default streaming host port is TCP 1935. See Wowza’s encoder connection instructions.
If the incoming stream is not Active, focus on the encoder-to-Wowza connection before changing the YouTube target. The target cannot push a source stream that Wowza is not receiving.

2. Check the Wowza-to-YouTube target
- Open the YouTube stream target in Wowza and confirm that its source is the incoming stream you just checked.
- Verify that the target’s destination application corresponds to the YouTube Stream URL. Recheck the Stream URL and stream key against the values shown for the event in YouTube Studio.
- Read the target status and use it to decide what to check next:
| Wowza target status | What it indicates | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting | The target is enabled but is not yet pushing. The configured source may not be connected, or Wowza may still be initializing its destination connection. | Confirm the selected source is connected and Active. Then verify the YouTube destination details. |
| Active | Wowza connected to YouTube and is pushing the target. | Check YouTube Live Control Room for the event preview; target status alone does not confirm that the expected video is visible there. |
| Error | Wowza could not connect. The cause may be an invalid target configuration or a destination-server issue. | Confirm the source is connected, then verify the Stream URL, stream key, destination application, and target configuration. |
Wowza describes the YouTube target as an RTMP connection. Follow its YouTube stream-target walkthrough when checking the source and destination fields.

Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and look for its preview. Wowza’s documented check for receipt at YouTube is the preview. If Wowza reports the target as Active but the preview is absent, do not treat the encoder’s reconnect message or the target status alone as proof that the event is ready; recheck the selected source and YouTube destination details.

A reconnect does not establish, by itself, whether YouTube will resume the same event. The reviewed official instructions do not provide a universal recovery time or guarantee that a reconnect returns to the same event. Check the event’s actual preview rather than relying on a fixed wait time.
4. Use the failing leg to narrow the fault
- Incoming stream missing or inactive: troubleshoot the encoder-to-Wowza leg—application and stream names, connection settings, port, and required credentials.
- Incoming stream Active, target Waiting: confirm the target uses that connected source; Wowza may also still be initializing its destination connection.
- Incoming stream Active, target Error: verify the target configuration and YouTube URL/key, and account for a possible destination-server issue.
- Target Active, no YouTube preview: verify the event and destination details in YouTube Studio and confirm receipt in Live Control Room before treating playback as restored.
5. Do not apply the incoming-stream timeout setting to every YouTube reconnect
Wowza documents a MediaCaster streamTimeout setting for monitoring and reconnecting certain offline incoming streams. Its stated protocol scope is native RTP, MPEG-TS, RTSP/RTP, and SHOUTcast/Icecast—not RTMP. The guide gives 12000 milliseconds (12 seconds) as an example threshold for retrying after a stream has been offline for more than that period. This is an example configuration value, not a measured recovery time, and it is not documented as a general fix for an outgoing YouTube RTMP target. Check your actual incoming protocol and consult Wowza’s MediaCaster Stream Monitor configuration guide before considering the setting.
