To capture a website screenshot with Java Selenium in Docker, run a browser in a Selenium container, connect to it with Java’s RemoteWebDriver, navigate to the page, and save the image returned by TakesScreenshot. Docker determines where the browser runs; the Java code still sends ordinary WebDriver commands. The basic screenshot API captures the current browsing context, not a guaranteed full-page image.
Choose where Selenium will run the browser
There are two common arrangements. A local WebDriver starts a browser on the same machine as the Java process. With Docker and Grid, Java connects to a server endpoint and Grid routes its commands to a browser instance running in a container. Selenium describes Grid as a way to run tests in parallel and across browser versions and platforms; it is more infrastructure than a one-off local session.

Selenium’s official Grid guide uses Java 11 or higher for its getting-started instructions. Check the Selenium Downloads page for the current release and use a compatible browser image. Release numbers and available image tags change; a pinned, versioned image makes the browser environment easier to reproduce than a moving latest tag.
Start a Selenium browser in Docker
The Selenium Project points to Docker as a useful way to deploy Grid and links to its official Docker repository for browser images. Follow the image’s current documentation for the exact image name, tag, and startup options. For a simple setup, run a standalone Grid container on the same host as your Java process. Its default WebDriver endpoint is http://localhost:4444 when the client and Grid share that host.

In a containerized application or a multi-container setup, localhost means the client container itself, not the Grid container. Use a hostname reachable from the Java process, such as the Grid service name on a shared Docker network, and use the endpoint path required by the Grid setup. Confirm that the endpoint is reachable before running the Java code. Do not expose an unauthenticated Grid endpoint to the public internet: Selenium warns that an exposed Grid can put its infrastructure, internal web applications, and files at risk and may let third parties run binaries. Keep access restricted to trusted networks and apply appropriate firewall rules.
Add Selenium Java and capture a screenshot
Add the Selenium Java binding to your project using your build system, choosing a current version from the official downloads page. The example below uses a remote Chrome session and Apache Commons IO to copy the screenshot file. The requested browser must be available on the Grid node. Update the Grid URL, target URL, and output path for your environment.

Set dimensions and page readiness deliberately
The example requests a 1440-by-900 browser window before navigation. Window size affects rendering, so set it explicitly when screenshots need comparable dimensions. The requested size is not by itself a guarantee that every browser or Grid configuration will use the exact viewport you expect; verify the resulting output in your environment.

Navigation and capture do not guarantee that a dynamic page has finished rendering its important content. If the site loads content asynchronously, wait for a relevant element or other page-specific readiness condition before capturing. Choose a condition that reflects what the screenshot needs to show rather than relying on an arbitrary delay. Handle timeouts as failures instead of saving an image that looks complete but is missing content.
Understand what the screenshot contains
TakesScreenshot with OutputType.FILE returns a screenshot of the current browsing context. The documented basic pattern does not promise a full-page capture. If you need the whole document, choose and validate a separate browser-specific or scrolling technique; do not assume that increasing the window size captures content beyond the viewport.

Use local ChromeDriver instead
When Docker is not required, the capture and save steps are the same, but construct a local driver rather than a RemoteWebDriver:

}Selenium Manager is used by Selenium bindings for automated driver and browser management by default, and the Grid quick start describes enabling it for driver configuration. In a remote setup, the browser process runs on the Grid node: a driver installed on the Java client host does not control that remote browser. Make sure the Grid node has the requested browser and can create the matching session.

Troubleshoot common failures

Make screenshot runs reproducible and economical
- Pin browser infrastructure: use a versioned Docker browser image and track the Selenium binding version so changes are intentional. Check current compatible tags rather than assuming a tag remains available.
- Control rendering inputs: keep the target URL, requested window dimensions, browser, and page-readiness condition stable when comparing outputs.
- Choose Grid for a reason: Grid adds a server and browser-node configuration, but provides a route to parallel runs and different browser versions or platforms. A local driver is simpler for an individual run.
- Close sessions: call
quit()in afinallyblock so browser sessions are not left running when navigation, capture, or file saving fails. - Budget for infrastructure: Docker Selenium requires a running browser environment and network access between Java and Grid. The official material cited here does not establish a universal resource or runtime cost; measure the needs of your own workload.
