Wowza Streaming Engine can publish recorded video as a live stream and send live output to an RTMP destination, so it can be used in a continuous YouTube playlist workflow. It is not a one-click playlist service: you configure file playback, an outgoing stream target and the server deployment, then keep that setup operating. It suits people who want control and can manage streaming infrastructure; those who want a simpler cloud workflow should consider StreamNeo.
What Wowza Streaming Engine does—and what you must operate
Engine is configurable server software, deployable on premises or in private, public-cloud and offline environments. It can publish on-demand files as live content, schedule playlist playback and distribute a live stream through a generic RTMP destination. Its documentation describes these capabilities, but does not establish a universal hardware minimum for this particular workload. For continuous YouTube playlist streams, the operator is responsible for configuring the Engine application and playback method, setting up the outgoing target, obtaining the current RTMP server address and stream key from YouTube’s live setup, and operating the deployment for the stream’s duration. The cited Engine documentation establishes generic RTMP distribution, not YouTube account setup or a tested end-to-end YouTube workflow.
Two documented ways to play files as live content
Schedule files with StreamPublisher and SMIL
Wowza’s StreamPublisher scheduler uses SMIL files to define on-demand video playback. The documentation supports repeat behavior with repeat="true" and scheduling a start time. Each scheduled application needs its own SMIL file. Scheduler SMIL files must be edited as scheduler files, not through the Manager’s SMIL Files editor. Publish a VOD file or M3U8 playlist with a server listener
A second documented approach uses ServerListenerStreamDemoPublisher to publish a VOD file as live content. Wowza also documents publishing an M3U8 playlist, with listener settings that include repeat behavior. Its documentation says, “Once the listener is enabled, the VOD file will loop on repeat until terminated.” This is a server-side loop, and the stream continues until the listener is terminated or the service otherwise stops. The sources describe both approaches but do not establish that one is easier for every operator. Choose based on whether you need scheduled playlist behavior or a more direct file/playlist publishing setup.

How the YouTube handoff fits together
- Prepare playback in Engine. Configure the chosen file or playlist publishing workflow in the intended application and confirm its playback behavior within the Engine deployment.
- Get the current ingest details from YouTube. In YouTube’s live setup, obtain the RTMP server address and stream key applicable to your channel and event. YouTube’s interface and account requirements can change; follow the current instructions shown there.
- Create the outgoing destination. Configure a Wowza Stream Target for the generic RTMP destination, using the server address and stream key from YouTube. Wowza documents RTMPS support in Stream Target configuration as well; use the protocol and endpoint that YouTube currently supplies.
- Choose the output shape. For a single output, configure the target for the destination stream. If distributing adaptive-bitrate renditions, Wowza documents a separate stream target for each rendition and corresponding destination streams. That adds configuration compared with a single RTMP output. See Wowza’s Stream Targets documentation.
- Start and monitor the workflow. Start the file publisher or scheduler and the outgoing target, then check YouTube’s live status and playback. Keep the Engine host and its network path operating while the stream is expected to remain live.
Wowza’s playback URL format includes protocol, host, port, application, optional instance and stream name; its examples use port 1935 as the default streaming port. That is not a universal YouTube ingest port: use the destination details YouTube provides and configure the target accordingly. See Wowza’s stream URL documentation.

Engine’s deployment flexibility means an on-premises server is one option, not a requirement. A cloud or virtual deployment can avoid buying physical server hardware, but it still leaves you responsible for configuring and operating the workflow. The cited technical specifications do not prescribe a universal minimum machine for continuous file-to-YouTube streaming, so size a deployment for the actual formats, number of outputs and transcoding workload rather than treating a generic specification as a guarantee.

For a short run, compare the one-time month option with the recurring monthly plan; for an ongoing channel, include the recurring license and the cost of hosting and operating the Engine deployment. If you need extra instances or more transcoded channels than included, account for the listed add-on charges. The pricing page’s included channel capacity is not a statement that every channel needs transcoding.
