Versionista recommends enabling redirect handling. The API is labeled experimental and may change. If you are looking to open a new monitoring account, Versionista currently directs prospective customers to Fluxguard; existing customers are told their accounts remain supported and need no action. Versionista’s homepage has that account notice.
Add a URL through Versionista’s documented API
The API adds a URL to the Versionista account authenticated by your API key; it does not create an account. The official documentation describes this as a pilot API and warns that it is experimental and subject to change. Check the current Versionista API documentation if a request or parameter behaves differently.

- Create an API key. In Versionista, open Settings and create an API key. The key is sent in the
X-Api-KeyHTTP header. - Choose the URL and options. Send the target URL in the JSON field
url. Setredirecttotrueto let Versionista attempt to follow redirects and determine the hostname, port, and protocol to track. This option defaults tofalse, though Versionista recommendstrue. Leavenew_siteunset or false to use the existing site grouping; set it totrueto put the URL in a new site, for example when monitoring the same site with different settings. - Submit the request. A successful response provides a page-view URL for the submitted URL; the API may instead return an error indication.

What to configure after adding the URL
Adding a page and deciding what else Versionista should discover or alert you about are separate tasks.

Discover additional URLs
To have Versionista find pages during a crawl, open the monitored site from the dashboard, expand Crawl, and enable finding new URLs on every crawl. The Versionista tutorial states a limit of 50 newly discovered URLs per scan and up to 150 newly discovered URLs per monitored site; it does not state a year for those limits. Found pages appear in email reports, where you can choose to monitor or pause them. Versionista advises against automatically monitoring every discovered URL for most uses. For typical sites, its tutorial suggests excluding images and stylesheets/JavaScript from discovery.
Choose change notifications
Versionista describes summary emails and instant alerts. Adjust summary frequency in Account Settings. Instant alerts are off by default; to enable them for a page, open its page view and expand Crawl. Account Settings also provide alert-content choices for text changes, text and HTML changes, or filtered changes. See the Versionista alerts tutorial for the documented controls.

Track specific phrases, or monitor broader changes
Focus phrases lets you enter one phrase per line; matching is case-insensitive. The feature applies to HTML and plain text, not images, PDFs, or Word documents. Versionista cautions that monitoring all changes and filtering irrelevant page areas may be simpler than maintaining a phrase list. The phrase-specific instructions are in the Versionista tutorial.

The official material reviewed documents the API steps above, but does not establish a current click-by-click dashboard workflow for adding a first website. Do not treat the post-addition dashboard controls for crawling and alerts as proof of a particular first-site setup sequence.
