Choose modern World of Warcraft (including the upcoming World of Warcraft: Forever) if you want the live game, current systems and the newest expansion ecosystem. This is the practical choice for a new player who wants to join friends playing the current version, follow the newest story and systems, or keep investing in one character as the live game changes. The 2006 foundation
Blizzard describes WoW Classic as “a faithful recreation of the original WoW experience, as it was in 2006.” The restoration covers combat mechanics, talent trees, character models and zone layouts. Do not assume that a guide for one branch applies to another. A talent recommendation, leveling route, profession plan or character rule can be correct for Classic Era and wrong for Season of Discovery, Hardcore or a progression expansion.

Combat, classes and talents
Modern WoW uses the current class and encounter framework, which is designed to support the live expansion’s activities. Classic restores older combat mechanics and talent trees; abilities arrive gradually and class responsibilities are often less flexible at low levels. How much old knowledge you need
Modern WoW is more forgiving if you have not played for years. You still need to learn your class and the current activity, but the game is built around contemporary expectations.
Classic rewards relearning. You may need to understand older talent trees, slower resource management, threat and pull behavior, resistance or utility requirements, and the practical limits of travel. You do not need encyclopedic knowledge to begin, but you should be willing to read tooltips, ask experienced players and accept that a “safe” plan often beats a fast one.
Character portability and permanence
Classic progression is tied to its iteration. Blizzard’s Classic FAQ states that progress does not carry over to another Classic version. Treat a Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery or progression-expansion character as a commitment to that branch. Do not start with the expectation that the character, level, gear or achievements will later become a modern WoW character.
Hardcore adds a second kind of permanence: death ends the run. That rule changes how you evaluate every fight. A dangerous shortcut, an under-geared dungeon or an unplanned disconnect is not merely an inconvenience; it can end the character’s progression.
Subscription, game time and purchase requirements
One subscription covers the available versions
Blizzard’s current Classic product page states: “With a single subscription you can access World of Warcraft and WoW Classic.” An active subscription or game time therefore provides access to modern WoW and the Classic versions available through your account. You do not need a second recurring subscription solely to try Classic.
The exact list of active Classic realms and phases can change. Log in through the official World of Warcraft client and review the realm or version selector for the options currently available in your region.

Forever is presented as an upgrade
Forever is presented as an upgrade product at launch, with in-game benefits and beta access described by Blizzard. How to choose your version in five steps
- Decide whether your priority is current or historical. Choose modern WoW if you want the live expansion and the newest systems. Choose Classic if reproducing an older era is itself the point.
- Choose your risk tolerance. Select Hardcore only when permanent character death is acceptable. For a lower-stakes first Classic experience, use Classic Era or another non-permadeath branch.

Start with Hardcore only after accepting the rule
Hardcore can make ordinary decisions exciting, but it is a poor fit if losing a character would make you quit. Practice movement, pulls and class controls in a non-Hardcore environment first if you are unsure. The defining rule is simple: when the character dies, that run ends.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling every Classic branch “vanilla.” Season of Discovery, Mists of Pandaria Classic and Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary have different systems and settings. Name the branch when asking for advice.
- Assuming modern conveniences apply everywhere. Travel, talent design, class roles and group expectations differ sharply. Verify that a guide matches your branch and phase.
- Expecting a transfer later. Classic progress does not carry between Classic iterations, and you should not promise yourself a move into modern WoW.
- Choosing Hardcore for the wrong reason. A popular guide or a friend’s enthusiasm does not remove the permadeath rule. Select it only if the risk is part of the appeal.
- Buying Forever without checking launch terms. Blizzard lists November 4, 2026 and describes an upgrade with beta access and in-game benefits, but the final price and exact package should be confirmed at purchase.
- Comparing level speed as if it were the only metric. Classic’s slower structure is intentional. Judge it by discovery, community and historical mechanics as well as by convenience.

- Confirm that your account has active subscription or game time.
