A worldwide Starlink outage means geographically distributed customers lose service because of a provider-wide or broadly regional problem—not simply one dish, router, or account. The July 24, 2025 incident affected users across multiple regions for roughly two to two-and-a-half hours. It demonstrated that a large satellite constellation still depends on ground-based software, routing, power, and support systems.

Downdetector and similar services can reveal a spike in user reports, but they do not count confirmed affected subscribers or identify the root cause. Reuters reported up to approximately 61,000 reports during the 2025 event; that was a tracker total, not a verified customer count.
What happened on July 24, 2025?
Reports began at approximately 19:00 UTC (3 p.m. Eastern Time), with ThousandEyes measuring a major disruption beginning around 19:13 UTC. Customers in the United States, Europe, and other regions reported losing connectivity. Independent monitoring estimated roughly 2.5 hours of disruption, while contemporary reports described service as down for more than two hours. Starlink later announced that the issue had been resolved. Recovery was staggered, so not every terminal necessarily reconnected at the same moment.
Reporting placed Starlink in roughly 140 countries and territories at the time. Residential and remote-work customers were affected, as were mobile, maritime, aviation, business, government, and emergency users. Reuters also reported Ukrainian officials describing the service as unavailable across the front. Those are historical reports, not a confirmed count of every customer or terminal affected.

What SpaceX confirmed
SpaceX engineering executive Michael Nicolls said the disruption resulted from a failure of “key internal software services that operate the core network.” Contemporary reporting said the event was not caused by the satellites or other physical hardware. See Engadget’s report.

What network measurements indicate
ThousandEyes observed terminals repeatedly attempting to reconnect, a global disruption, and staggered recovery. That pattern is consistent with a centralized control-plane, service-orchestration, or routing failure rather than a single local gateway problem. Its analysis is available at ThousandEyes.
What has not been established
The available authoritative material does not prove a cyberattack, solar storm, satellite collision, mass satellite-firmware failure, T-Mobile Direct-to-Cell involvement, or a particular database, GPS, or routing defect. Such explanations circulated online, but speculation is not a postmortem. A later industry account linked the incident to an upgrade procedure involving ground compute clusters; that detail should remain attributed rather than presented as a complete SpaceX explanation.
How can a satellite network fail globally?
Starlink has a space segment—the satellites and their radio links—and a ground and software segment. Usable internet access also requires:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Satellite-to-satellite and satellite-to-ground routing
- Ground stations and connections to internet exchanges
- Authentication, account, and authorization systems
- Network-control, traffic-management, and orchestration software
- Customer terminals, gateways, routers, and continuous power
A large constellation provides redundancy against many individual satellite failures. It does not automatically remove shared software or control-plane dependencies. The 2025 event therefore shows that satellites can remain physically operational while customers lose internet access when essential network services fail.

What to do if your Starlink is offline
- Check the official status page: starlink.statuspage.io.
- Open the app and support portal: look for terminal alerts, service notices, billing status, and troubleshooting guidance at starlink.com/support.
- Separate a local failure from an outage: test another device, check whether Wi-Fi works without internet access, and ask a nearby Starlink user or consult a reputable outage tracker.
- Check power and cables: verify the dish and router have power; reseat accessible connectors; inspect for water ingress, damage, or a tripped breaker.
- Check the installation: look for new tree or structural obstructions, snow or ice, severe precipitation, wind movement, or vehicle and maritime mounting constraints.
- Check the account and plan: paused or suspended service, an unauthorized roaming location, or a plan restriction can look like a network outage.
- Do not factory-reset during a confirmed provider incident: a reset cannot repair Starlink’s core network and can create a separate configuration problem.
- Wait and monitor during a confirmed outage: restoration may be staggered.
- Contact support if status is normal but your terminal remains offline: submit a ticket through Starlink Support.
When the problem probably is not worldwide
| Symptom | More likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Only one device fails | Device, Wi-Fi, or local network problem |
| Wi-Fi works but internet does not | Dish link, routing, regional, or provider-side issue |
| App reports obstructions | Trees, buildings, snow, or poor sky visibility |
| Dish repeatedly reboots | Power supply, cable, or terminal fault |
| Entire property is offline | Utility power loss unless backup power is available |
| Account shows a restriction | Billing, service-area, or roaming-plan issue |
How reliable is Starlink?
Starlink’s availability map advertises “more than 99.9% average uptime.” That is a provider marketing claim, not an independently audited guarantee for every location, plan, or period. See Starlink’s availability map.
Starlink can be highly useful where fiber, cable, and telephone infrastructure is unavailable, and it can remain available when a local terrestrial line is cut. However, it still depends on Starlink’s software, ground network, upstream internet connections, customer power, and unobstructed sky view. The 2025 outage demonstrated that satellite internet is not immune to provider-wide software or ground-infrastructure failures.
Business and critical-use plans
Starlink says its Priority Plans can include prioritized support, a publicly routable IPv4 address, and a service-level agreement. Terms vary by market and plan; consult the applicable contract at Starlink Business. An SLA does not make a customer immune to a global software incident.

A backup is genuinely independent only when it does not share the same provider, power system, router, or physical path.
Is Starlink still suitable as a primary connection?
For an ordinary rural household without dependable wired broadband, Starlink can remain a reasonable primary connection if the address has capacity, the dish has a clear sky view, and power and weather limitations are acceptable. It is often a poor value in urban areas with reliable fiber or cable. Mobile users must also account for plan authorization, regional rules, obstructions, and power.
SpaceX’s June 2026 prospectus reported approximately 10.3 million Starlink subscribers as of March 31, 2026, while Starlink’s map says service is available in more than 150 countries, territories, and markets. That scale makes resilience important, but it does not guarantee identical performance at every address.

The documented worldwide disruption was on July 24, 2025, when a failure in internal software services operating Starlink’s core network interrupted users across multiple regions for roughly two to two-and-a-half hours. The evidence points to a network-control and ground-software failure, not destroyed satellites. Check Starlink’s live status page before troubleshooting, and use a genuinely independent connection and backup power if an outage would threaten your work or safety.
