The work is not a GeForce driver feature, game patch, GPU architecture, or consumer toggle. It is an algorithmic and implementation advance described in the paper “ReSTIR PT Enhanced: Algorithmic Advances for Faster and More Robust ReSTIR Path Tracing.”
The authors—Daqi Lin, Markus Kettunen, and Chris Wyman—present the work through NVIDIA Research, where the project is labeled a Best Paper. The publication appears in the 2026 Proceedings of the ACM on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques. NVIDIA’s project page is the current source for the reported results.

Why real-time path tracing needs better sampling
Path tracing estimates lighting with random samples. A pixel may need many samples and long, multi-bounce paths before its result converges, so using only a small ray budget produces Monte Carlo noise. Real-time renderers compensate with temporal accumulation, denoising and carefully chosen reuse of samples.

A reservoir is a compact record of a statistically selected candidate sample and the weighting information needed to use it later. ReSTIR methods reuse candidates between nearby pixels (spatial reuse) and between frames (temporal reuse), increasing the effective sample count without tracing every path from scratch.

The original generalized ReSTIR PT work demonstrated interactive path tracing with many-bounce diffuse and specular lighting while shading one path per pixel, establishing the foundation for the Enhanced paper. NVIDIA’s 2022 generalized-resampling publication provides that background.
What ReSTIR PT Enhanced changes
Reciprocal neighbor selection
NVIDIA says reciprocal neighbor selection halves the cost of spatial reuse. Instead of treating every pixel-to-neighbor relationship as an entirely separate operation, the implementation can share reciprocal relationships more efficiently. This reduces overhead; it does not make spatial reuse free.
Footprint-based reconnection criteria
When a path is reused at another pixel, the renderer must reconnect or evaluate it at the new surface. Footprint-based criteria test whether the path remains sufficiently compatible with the target region. Rejecting poor matches is intended to prevent unreliable shift mappings from becoming visible or numerical errors.

Duplication maps
Reuse can make errors correlated: neighboring pixels or successive frames may repeatedly receive essentially the same mistake. That can appear as streaking, structured noise or persistent patterns instead of independent random noise. Duplication maps are designed to reduce this spatiotemporal correlation.
Unified reservoirs for direct and global illumination
The paper combines direct- and global-illumination information in the same reservoir infrastructure. The lighting contributions remain different calculations, but sharing reservoir management can reduce duplicated data handling and improve implementation efficiency.
Noise-reduction techniques
NVIDIA also incorporates existing techniques for color-noise and disocclusion-noise reduction. These supporting methods are distinct from the paper’s newly described algorithmic changes. A disocclusion is an area newly exposed by camera or object movement, where a previous frame has no valid history.

What the 2–3× claim means
“2–3× faster” is NVIDIA’s reported aggregate result for Enhanced ReSTIR PT compared with the relevant prior ReSTIR PT implementation used in the authors’ evaluation. It should not be read as a universal multiplier for every path-traced game, GPU, scene or resolution.
- The comparison depends on the selected baseline implementation.
- Scene composition, resolution, ray and sample budgets, denoising and GPU architecture can change the result.
- The figure appears to combine algorithmic changes with implementation engineering.
- The project page does not establish one frame rate, hardware configuration or memory figure that applies to all systems.
Consequently, the claim does not mean that Cyberpunk 2077 or another existing title will automatically run at two or three times its current frame rate, nor that unrestricted, full-quality path tracing is inexpensive on every RTX card.
Why robustness and correlation matter as much as speed
A renderer can have lower average error yet look worse in motion if its errors are correlated. Noise variance measures deviation from the correct result; correlation describes errors that repeat across pixels or frames. Temporal instability includes swimming, flicker and ghost-like trails as history changes. Disocclusion artifacts occur when previously hidden surfaces become visible and old samples no longer describe them.
Improved reconnection tests and duplication control are intended to reduce those failure modes. They do not guarantee that all ghosting, flicker or disocclusion artifacts disappear. Camera cuts, incorrect motion vectors, deforming geometry, thin foliage, transparency, animated materials, specular paths, tiny emissive lights and difficult caustics remain challenging cases for any reuse-heavy estimator.
What this is not
- It is not a new GPU architecture or hardware feature.
- It is not identified as a GeForce driver update or game integration.
- It is not DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction or Frame Generation.
- It is not RTX Direct Illumination, RTX Global Illumination or NVIDIA OptiX itself.
- It is not presented by NVIDIA as a neural-rendering or AI system.
- It does not replace denoising, upscaling, ray-tracing hardware or engine integration work.
How it fits NVIDIA’s broader ReSTIR research
Enhanced is part of an active research line rather than an isolated product announcement. Related NVIDIA publications explore reservoir splatting for temporal reuse, motion blur and depth of field; path guiding; caustics; gradient-domain ReSTIR path tracing; multilayer reservoirs for disocclusions; compatibility-guided neighbor selection; and level-of-detail-aware ReSTIR.
- Reservoir splatting
- ReSTIR path guiding
- ReSTIR methods for caustics
- Multi-layer reservoir splatting
- Compatibility-guided neighbor selection
- Level-of-detail-aware ReSTIR
Those projects also illustrate why disocclusions, changing topology and difficult spatial reuse should be treated as continuing engineering problems, not as problems permanently solved by one paper.

What an engine team would need to implement it
A practical integration would require substantially more than enabling a shader flag:
- A path-tracing renderer and ray-tracing-capable hardware.
- Reservoir storage, updates and synchronization for spatial and temporal reuse.
- Motion vectors, surface identifiers and correspondence data for history validation.
- Footprint and reconnection validity tests, plus explicit history invalidation after camera cuts, resolution changes or major scene changes.
- Denoising and handling for color noise, disocclusions and other unstable regions.
- Scene-specific testing for animated geometry, transparency, thin surfaces, specular paths and small or difficult lights.
- A public implementation or license. NVIDIA’s project page does not identify a downloadable production SDK, source package or commercial integration.
Can you use ReSTIR PT Enhanced today?
Based on the official project page, no consumer-facing switch, driver release, named game integration or public production SDK is identified. Developers should treat it as published research pending implementation availability and licensing details.
RTX-capable hardware can still be useful for experimenting with real-time ray tracing, but buying a GPU does not provide Enhanced automatically. NVIDIA’s GeForce graphics cards are suitable for individual development and testing, while RTX professional GPUs target workstation and certified-driver workflows. Teams building custom ray-tracing applications can examine the OptiX SDK and broader NVIDIA RTX developer technologies, but neither page establishes that ReSTIR PT Enhanced is included as a ready-made implementation.

Bottom line
ReSTIR PT Enhanced is a meaningful algorithmic research result: NVIDIA reports 2–3× faster ReSTIR path tracing together with lower error and improved robustness, using reciprocal spatial reuse, footprint-aware reconnection, duplication maps and unified reservoir infrastructure. Its practical impact will depend on reproducible results across production scenes, implementation cost, public code or SDK access and eventual engine adoption. For now, it is a promising research direction—not a feature that RTX owners can simply turn on.
