Workout Recovery Time: How Long to Rest Between Sessions

ACSM’s 48-hour starting point applies to higher-intensity workouts for the same muscles—not every session. Learn how to account for soreness, workout demands and weekly activity goals.

For higher-intensity workouts that use the same muscle groups, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends allowing at least 48 hours between sessions. That is a practical starting point—not a universal rule or a guarantee that everyone is ready after two days. Recovery needs depend on the workout’s intensity, type and duration, as well as how you feel.

How much recovery do you really need between workouts?

Start by asking whether the next session will challenge the same muscles and how demanding it will be. ACSM’s 48-hour guidance applies specifically to higher-intensity exercise of the same muscle groups. It does not set an exact rest interval for every activity, workout or person.

A hard session followed by another hard session for the same muscles is different from training a different muscle group or doing comfortable, low-intensity activity. The sources cited here do not establish a precise formula for those other cases. Use the planned session and your symptoms to guide the decision rather than treating 48 hours as a biological countdown.

How long should you wait before working the same muscles again?

After a higher-intensity session

Allow at least 48 hours before another higher-intensity session for the same muscle groups, following ACSM’s 2019 consumer guidance. Think of this as a baseline for spacing demanding sessions, not proof that soreness, fatigue or reduced function will always be gone by then.

When the next workout is lighter or targets different muscles

The 48-hour recommendation is not a blanket ban on movement or on exercising other parts of the body. A lighter session, a different muscle group and a demanding repeat session place different demands on you. ACSM says recovery should be tailored to workout intensity, type and duration; it does not give an exact wait time for each of these alternatives.

Do weekly exercise targets tell you when to rest?

No. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week and muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days a week. Those are general U.S. public-health targets, not a personalized training schedule or a rule that strength sessions must be exactly 48 hours apart.

Can you work out if you are still sore?

Mild soreness does not automatically mean you must avoid all activity. Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) can follow unfamiliar or demanding exercise and usually lasts only a few days. ACSM says soreness often becomes less severe as the body adapts to repeated work, and that fitness gains do not require pain.

Use function as well as soreness as a guide. If symptoms make the planned activity difficult or too painful, ACSM advises refraining for a few days and returning as discomfort allows. Stop exercising if acute pain occurs during a session. Soreness may temporarily diminish while you are active and return afterward, so feeling better during a warm-up alone does not establish that the muscles are fully recovered.

Does soreness mean your muscles have recovered?

No single soreness level establishes readiness. ACSM notes that soreness tends to lessen with adaptation, but the absence of soreness is not a validated recovery test, and soreness itself is not a required sign of a productive workout. Consider whether the planned session is demanding, whether it uses the same muscles and whether discomfort affects how you move or perform the activity.

What can you do on a recovery day?

A recovery day does not have to mean complete inactivity. If it feels comfortable, ACSM lists less intense recreational activity, light yoga, mobility work, massage and foam rolling as options. Its guidance says light activity should not impair recovery, but also notes limited evidence that it hastens recovery. These are choices, not requirements; a foam roller or other tool is not necessary to recover.

Support recovery with basic habits

ACSM’s 2019 recovery brochure emphasizes rest and sleep, nutrition and hydration. It recommends at least eight hours of sleep nightly; that is the brochure’s general recommendation, not an individualized sleep assessment. Well-chosen nutrition strategies can support sports performance and recovery, but the evidence cited here does not establish that a particular supplement is necessary. A dietitian can help with an individualized nutrition plan.

A practical way to decide what to do next

  1. Check muscle overlap. Is the next demanding session for the same muscles as the last one? If so, use ACSM’s minimum 48-hour spacing guidance for higher-intensity work as a starting point.
  2. Compare the session demands. Consider intensity, type and duration; a lighter session is not the same demand as another hard workout.
  3. Check symptoms and function. Mild soreness is not necessarily a reason to stop all movement, but pain or symptoms that make the planned activity difficult are reasons to pause or modify it.
  4. Fit sessions into the week. Use CDC weekly activity targets as public-health goals, not as an individualized recovery prescription.

There is no validated recovery calculator established by the sources cited here that turns age, training history, sleep or nutrition into an exact rest interval. A plan should be adjusted to the actual sessions and your response to them, rather than relying on a single number or soreness score.
