In ParkEase, a parking marketplace described as serving India, a blank map traced to three separate problems: a MapLibre worker URL that resolved to the wrong file, a zero-height container that clipped the canvas, and an animation that overwrote marker positioning.
Onkar Deokate’s October 6, 2026 account shows why debugging a blank map means checking asset delivery, layout, and CSS transforms separately—not assuming that a green test suite proves the browser rendered the result. Read the original account on DEV Community.

Why the map stayed blank while the app worked
ParkEase’s web build still showed its parking list and surrounding interface, but the map area was empty. The failures occurred at different layers, and one was uncovered only after the preceding problem was fixed. A visible list therefore did not establish that the map’s worker, canvas, or markers were functioning.
First failure: the worker URL returned the app instead of JavaScript
What happened
MapLibre expected to locate its web worker relative to its module. In the Expo web bundle described by Deokate, that expected module-relative context was unavailable, so the computed URL pointed to a worker file that did not exist at that path. The development server responded to the unknown path with the app’s HTML. The worker consequently received a page instead of JavaScript and failed before it could process map tiles.

What fixed it
The reported fix was to set a known worker URL explicitly and copy the worker and its imported chunks into the directory served by the web build. This addresses both parts of the failure: choosing a valid URL and ensuring the files it references are actually deployed. A worker path that works in development is not enough if the built static output omits the worker or its chunks.
How to verify the failure mode
When startup fails, check the worker request in the browser’s network tools. Confirm that it returns JavaScript from the expected asset path, rather than an HTML document or a missing-file response. Also inspect the built output to ensure the worker and imported chunks were copied. Deokate reports three worker-copy tests, but does not establish that those tests validate every production build or deployment.

Second failure: a zero-height container clipped the canvas
Why tiles could load without becoming visible
After the worker issue was addressed, tiles loaded but the map still appeared blank. The account attributes this to an injected overflow: hidden rule on .maplibregl-canvas-container. That container held only absolutely positioned children, so it had no height of its own. The overflow rule then clipped the canvas and markers.

The reported remedy was to remove the clipping rule and add a CSS regression test to catch its return. Deokate reports three CSS checks in total. A useful browser check is to inspect the container’s computed height and overflow, then confirm that the canvas and markers are visible within the map after the layout is applied.

Third failure: the entrance animation displaced every marker
Why the markers stacked in one corner
Once the map itself rendered, all twenty markers appeared at one corner. MapLibre positioned each marker using transform, but the entrance animation also set transform. The animation overrode the positional transform, so the markers lost their individual locations.
How the animation was corrected
The account says the animation was changed to use the individual CSS scale and translate properties rather than replacing the transform MapLibre uses for positioning. That lets the animation effects coexist with the marker’s map-derived position.

Deokate’s article comment suggests a stronger browser-level check: seed two markers, then confirm they remain distinct and inside the map after the entrance animation, pan and zoom, and container resizing. It is a suggested check, not a reported test result.

What ten green tests establish—and what they do not
Deokate reports ten tests after the fixes: three CSS checks, four map-startup checks, and three worker-copy checks. Those counts describe the author’s implementation; they are not independently reproduced, and the account does not establish full browser or deployment coverage. In particular, a test that checks configuration or copied files may not catch a marker displaced by animation or a canvas clipped by the final rendered layout.

For a map that can silently appear empty, the failure state matters as much as the tests. The reported implementation now displays “map unavailable” with the reason when worker setup fails. As Deokate puts it, “if a screen can be empty, the empty state has to say why.”
