A site’s response time and Core Web Vitals emerge from the hosting hardware, network distance, cache state, WordPress code, database work, media delivery, software versions and server configuration working together. A useful benchmark controls those variables, measures both uncached and cached visits, and repeats the test enough times to separate normal variation from a real improvement.

What a WordPress performance benchmark actually measures
A benchmark is a repeatable measurement of a defined page under defined conditions. It is not a score that applies to every WordPress installation. Two sites using the same content-management system can produce very different results because their origin servers, themes, plugins, databases, images, visitors and cache layers do different work.

WordPress.org’s Advanced Administration Handbook summarizes the principle plainly: “Several factors can affect the performance of your WordPress blog (or website).” The practical consequence is that a credible comparison must state what was tested, where it was tested, which software was running and whether the request was served from cache.
Use a fixed URL and unchanged page content when comparing hosts or configurations. Keep the theme, plugin set, PHP and WordPress versions, device profile and test geography constant. Record the cache condition for every run. A warm-cache result answers a different question from a first visit that must execute PHP, query the database and build a page at the origin.

The metrics that explain speed
| Metric | What it tells you | Why it belongs in a benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| Time to First Byte (TTFB) | How long the browser waits for the first response byte after requesting the URL. | Helps isolate origin processing, network latency and cache effectiveness before page rendering begins. |
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | When the page’s largest visible content element finishes rendering. | Shows whether the main content arrives quickly for a user, including server, asset and render-blocking delays. |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How promptly the page responds visually after a user interaction. | Reveals client-side JavaScript work that a fast server response may not expose. |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | How much visible content moves unexpectedly during loading. | Captures layout stability problems such as images or advertisements without reserved dimensions. |
| Request count | How many separate network requests the page makes. | More requests can increase connection, scheduling and server work, especially on high-latency networks. |
| Transfer size | The bytes downloaded for the document and its assets. | Shows the cost of images, scripts, stylesheets, fonts and other media after compression. |
| Waterfall bottlenecks | The sequence and duration of requests, including blocked, render-blocking or late-loading resources. | Identifies which specific resource or dependency is delaying the visible page. |
Report TTFB alongside the Core Web Vitals rather than replacing them with a single synthetic grade. TTFB can be excellent while a heavy script delays interaction, and a reasonable server response can still produce a poor LCP if the largest image is late or render-blocking resources dominate the critical path.
Build a fair test before changing anything
Fix the page and software
Choose one URL that represents the workload you care about, such as a busy article, product page or home page. Do not change its text, image dimensions, menus or embeds between candidates. Record the active theme, every enabled plugin, WordPress release, PHP release, database configuration and web-server settings. Plugin count by itself is not a valid workload description: one plugin may perform almost no work while another adds queries, remote calls and front-end JavaScript on every request.
Fix geography and device conditions
Run tests from the same location or set of locations and use the same browser, viewport, connection profile and device class. Geographic distance adds network latency, so a server can appear fast to a nearby tester and slow to readers on another continent. If your audience is distributed, retain separate regional results instead of averaging them into a number that hides the difference.
Separate cold and warm caches
Label each run as uncached or cached. An uncached request measures the work required to reach the origin and generate the response. A warm full-page or edge-cache request measures the experience after a reusable response already exists. Also note whether object, opcode, fragment or static-asset caches were warm. Cache invalidation matters: after publishing or purging, the first visitor may pay the regeneration cost again.

Repeat enough times to see variation
Run repeated measurements rather than trusting one sample. Save the individual values and report a central result plus the spread when possible. Load, transient network conditions and cache misses can create outliers. WordPress 6.6 performance documentation from 2024 reported Core Web Vitals and Server-Timing data collected from 100 runs; WordPress 6.7 release reporting in 2024 also used 100 runs. Those figures describe controlled release measurements, not a universal average load time for WordPress sites.
Hosting and hardware: the origin’s workload
The origin server must accept the request, execute PHP, obtain data from the database, assemble the response and send it back. CPU capacity affects PHP execution; memory affects concurrency and caching; storage latency affects database and file operations; and the web-server configuration determines how those resources are scheduled. Record the server configuration when comparing providers, not just the advertised plan name.
On a shared server, other accounts can compete for CPU, memory, disk I/O or database capacity. Contention often appears as variable TTFB: the same page may respond quickly in one run and slowly in another. A faster plan or isolated environment can reduce that variability, but the benchmark should demonstrate the change under the same workload rather than assuming more resources automatically improve front-end metrics.
Distance, routing and content delivery
Every request travels between the visitor and the server. Longer physical and network distance increases round-trip latency, and poor routing can add delay even when the server itself is lightly loaded. Test from the locations that matter to your audience.

A content delivery network (CDN) can serve static files from an edge location closer to the visitor. Depending on its configuration, it may also cache complete HTML responses at the edge. Compare the origin and edge paths separately: a CDN that accelerates images and stylesheets does not necessarily remove the PHP and database work required for an uncached HTML request.
Caching layers and what each one removes
- Static-asset cache: Reuses files such as stylesheets, scripts, fonts and images so they do not have to be regenerated.
- Opcode cache: Keeps compiled PHP instructions in memory, reducing repeated compilation on the server.
- Object cache: Reuses database-backed values and expensive computed objects between requests.
- Fragment cache: Stores reusable portions of a page while allowing other sections to remain dynamic.
- Full-page or edge cache: Reuses an entire HTML response, often avoiding WordPress execution for eligible visitors.
These layers solve different parts of the request. A page can have a warm opcode cache and still perform slow database queries, or have a cached image while generating HTML at the origin for every visit. Document which layers are enabled, their expiry rules and what events purge them. A configuration that looks fastest immediately after warming can become slower after frequent invalidation if every purge forces expensive regeneration.

WordPress execution, database work and third-party services
WordPress core, the theme and plugins all contribute PHP code and database queries. A request may also call external services for analytics, fonts, maps, payment widgets, social feeds or email features. Each dependency can add DNS, connection and processing time, and a slow or unavailable service can hold up rendering.
Inspect Server-Timing data and request waterfalls when available. They can show whether time is spent in application code, database queries, remote calls or the browser. Test one code or configuration change at a time; disabling several plugins together may improve a score but leaves you unable to identify the cause or judge the feature trade-off.

Images and other media
Image performance depends on the number of files, their pixel dimensions, encoded format and byte size. A page that displays a small thumbnail should not download a multi-megapixel original. WordPress recommends choosing an appropriate format and compression level for the content. Responsive source selection can deliver different dimensions to different screens, while lazy loading can defer images that are outside the initial viewport.
These techniques change both transfer size and rendering order. Lazy loading the image that supplies the page’s largest visible element can delay LCP, so distinguish below-the-fold media from the primary above-the-fold asset. Record which image variant was fetched in each test; otherwise two apparently identical runs may have downloaded different bytes.

Versions and server configuration
WordPress and PHP releases can change execution speed, memory behavior and compatibility. Database settings, availability of an object-cache backend and web-server rules can also alter results. When comparing versions, hold content and traffic conditions constant and record the exact release numbers. A benchmark that changes PHP, the cache layer and a plugin at the same time cannot attribute the result to any one factor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare hosts or configurations
| Comparison axis | Record for every candidate | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Origin response | TTFB with the page uncached | Shows how the server handles PHP, database and application work without a reusable HTML response. |
| Cached delivery | TTFB with the same warm cache and its geographic location | Shows how effectively repeated visits avoid origin processing. |
| User experience | LCP, INP and CLS under the same device and network profile | Connects infrastructure changes to what visitors see and feel. |
| Repeatability | Run count, median or other chosen summary, and variation | Separates a durable improvement from a lucky or unusually quiet run. |
| Load behavior | Throughput and response-time changes under representative concurrent traffic | Reveals contention that a single-user test cannot expose. |
| Cache operation | Cache hit behavior, expiry and purge or regeneration time | Measures the cost of publishing and invalidation, not just the best warm result. |
| Geographic consistency | Results from each important region | Prevents a nearby test location from masking slow distant users. |
| Page weight | Request count, transfer size and largest waterfall resources | Identifies front-end work that changing hosts will not fix. |
| Operational controls | Available PHP versions, cache controls, logs and configuration access | Indicates whether you can diagnose and correct regressions later. |
No single synthetic score can identify a universal winner. Workload, geography, cache state and software differ, so choose the configuration that improves the metrics relevant to your visitors while preserving the controls you need to operate the site.

A repeatable WordPress benchmarking workflow
- Capture a baseline. Test the chosen URL with the current theme, plugins, software releases, device profile, geography and cache state. Save TTFB, LCP, INP, CLS, request count, transfer size and the waterfall.
- Classify the bottleneck. Decide whether the largest delay is origin response, render-blocking work, the LCP resource, interaction scripting, layout movement or network distance.
- Change one variable. Alter only the hosting or server setting, cache layer, CDN behavior, plugin or theme code, image delivery or software version under investigation.
- Warm and label caches. Run the same uncached and cached scenarios as the baseline, documenting purges, expiry and regeneration events.
- Repeat under identical conditions. Use the same run count and test locations. Keep the individual measurements so outliers remain visible.
- Check real-user impact. Keep the change only when the target metric and the experience for the intended audience both improve. A lower TTFB is not a win if it introduces worse layout shifts or slower interactions.
- Document the result. Store the URL, content revision, software versions, device and geography, cache state, run count and configuration so a future test can reproduce it.
Diagnose common benchmark results
TTFB is high only when the page is uncached
Focus on origin processing: CPU or memory contention, database queries, PHP code, external calls and missing opcode or object caching. Compare a quiet period with representative load to determine whether shared-resource contention is involved.
TTFB is good but LCP is slow
Inspect the waterfall for the LCP image, render-blocking stylesheets, fonts and scripts. Check whether the main image is oversized, delivered from a distant location or incorrectly lazy-loaded. The server may be responding promptly while the browser waits for critical assets.
INP is poor after the page appears
Look for heavy or long-running JavaScript, event handlers and third-party widgets. A hosting change alone may not help if the delay occurs on the device after the HTML has arrived.
CLS varies between runs
Check whether images, embeds, advertisements or fonts receive reserved space before loading. A different asset timing or late-injected component can move content even when TTFB remains unchanged.
Results differ sharply by region
Compare origin distance, routing and CDN edge coverage. Keep regional results separate and verify that the same cache status was reached in each location.
Benchmark mistakes that produce misleading conclusions
- Comparing different pages, themes, plugin sets or content revisions.
- Mixing cold-cache and warm-cache results without labeling them.
- Using one run as proof of a performance change.
- Reporting only a synthetic score and omitting TTFB, Core Web Vitals and the waterfall.
- Testing from one nearby location when visitors are distributed globally.
- Blaming the number of plugins instead of measuring the work each plugin performs.
- Changing several variables at once, making attribution impossible.
- Calling a release benchmark or a one-time test an industry-wide average.
The cited WordPress release notes provide 100-run measurement records for WordPress 6.6 and 6.7 in 2024, but official sources do not publish one universal average WordPress load time. Treat every result as conditional on its page, environment and method.
