Yes—you can host a DayZ dedicated server on Linux. The supported installation path is SteamCMD, DayZ’s server application ID is 223350, and the process should run under a normal service account rather than root. A reliable deployment has five parts: choose a host with enough CPU, memory and SSD space; install the required 32-bit libraries; download the server with SteamCMD; configure serverDZ.cfg and launch parameters; then expose the game and query ports through every firewall and NAT layer.

Start with an unmodded server and verify that it stays online and accepts a connection. Add Workshop content only after the vanilla installation is stable. That order makes port, mission, persistence and mod errors much easier to separate.

1. Choose where the server will run
Linux DayZ hosting works on a machine in your home, a self-managed virtual private server (VPS), or a dedicated physical server. The software steps are broadly the same, but the network and maintenance responsibilities differ.

Whichever location you choose, create a dedicated, unprivileged account such as dayz and make it the owner of the installation directory. Bohemia Interactive explicitly warns: “Do not run the server as root!” If a server process is compromised, an unprivileged account limits what an attacker can change elsewhere on the operating system.

Use your distribution’s account-management tool to create the account, give it a home directory and a login shell, then switch to that account before downloading or launching the server. Do not solve permission errors by starting SteamCMD or DayZ with sudo; correct ownership on the server directory instead.
2. Check hardware and install Linux dependencies
Bohemia’s published minimum
Bohemia’s current server-requirements page lists an Intel dual-core processor at 2.4 GHz or an AMD dual-core processor at 2.5 GHz, 6 GB of RAM and 2.5 GB of storage. The page specifically recommends an SSD for installation and log storage. These are published minimums, not a promise about player capacity, tick rate or mod performance.

Practical headroom for real installations
A community setup guide from the StarDZ Team uses 8 GB of RAM as a practical minimum and 16 GB as a recommended target, with 20 GB and 40 GB SSD examples respectively. Treat those figures as community sizing guidance rather than a replacement for Bohemia’s requirements. Mods, long-running logs, persistence data, backups and other services on the same host all consume additional space or memory.

Install the required 32-bit libraries
The Linux guide calls for architecture-specific 32-bit runtime libraries. The examples below are for the distributions named by that guide; package names can change between releases, so verify the equivalent package for your exact distribution.
- Debian or Ubuntu:

Install these as an administrator, then return to the unprivileged dayz account for SteamCMD and DayZ. If a package is unavailable, do not substitute a similarly named library blindly: check the package name and multilib configuration for that release.
3. Download SteamCMD and install the DayZ server
SteamCMD is the standard Steam tool for downloading and updating dedicated-server files. Create a directory owned by the service account, download the Linux archive, extract it, and run steamcmd.sh from that directory.

Install with a Steam account
DayZ’s dedicated-server application ID is 223350. Replace YOUR_STEAM_LOGIN with the account credentials required by your installation policy:

If anonymous access works for the base application but a mod download requires an account, follow the current SteamCMD and mod documentation rather than repeatedly retrying the anonymous command. Never place a Steam password in a shell history that other users can read.
After installation, inspect ~/servers/dayz-server/ and identify the server executable and mission directories that were actually installed. Names can change with a package or server version, so verify them before writing a permanent service definition.

4. Create serverDZ.cfg and define the launch command
DayZ separates persistent server settings from command-line behavior. Put the server’s gameplay and administrative configuration in serverDZ.cfg, then use launch parameters for the port, profile directory, mission, diagnostics, mods and storage locations.
Core parameters
-config=serverDZ.cfgselects the configuration file. Use an absolute path if the process may start from a different working directory.-port=2302sets the game listen port. Change it only when you have a specific reason, and then update every firewall and forwarding rule to match.-profiles=/home/dayz/profilesplaces profiles and logs in a known, writable directory outside the executable tree.-mission=./mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplusselects a mission. The official configuration reference is authoritative for each parameter’s meaning and syntax. Keep the configuration file, custom mission files, profiles and persistence data in locations you can back up independently of the downloaded binaries.
Minimal first launch
Start without mods so that the first test covers only the base server, mission and network:

-mission=./mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplusIf your installation contains a differently named executable or mission directory, substitute the paths you verified after installation. Do not add mod parameters until this command remains running and produces normal profile or RPT logs.
Run it under systemd (optional)
For a server that should restart after a reboot, create a systemd unit with the service account, working directory and the same launch command. The exact path must match your installation:

sudo systemctl status dayz.serviceUse sudo systemctl stop dayz.service before updates or file replacement. A service manager does not remove the need to inspect the DayZ logs; it only controls process startup and restart behavior.
5. Open the DayZ network ports
A server can be running correctly and still be invisible if one of the network layers blocks it. The commonly documented forwarding range is UDP 2302-2305. Bohemia’s reference uses -port=2302 for the game port and gives steamQueryPort=2305 as a query-port example; both values are configurable.
Open every applicable layer
- Linux firewall: allow UDP traffic for the selected game and query ports. If you use a narrower range than 2302-2305, allow exactly the ports configured in DayZ.
- VPS or provider firewall: add matching inbound UDP rules to the provider security group or network firewall. A host-level rule alone cannot override a blocked provider rule.
- Home router: forward the selected UDP ports to the Linux machine’s fixed local address. A changing DHCP address will silently break the forwarding rule.
Do not expose administrative services unnecessarily. Restrict SSH or other management ports separately, use key-based authentication where practical, and keep the DayZ process unprivileged.

Check the query port, public IP address, Linux firewall, provider security group and router forwarding before changing gameplay settings. Test from a network outside your home LAN when possible; a local test can succeed even when carrier-grade NAT or an incorrect public forwarding rule prevents outside players from connecting.
6. Verify the vanilla server before adding mods
Use this sequence for the first launch:
- Confirm that the
dayzaccount owns the server directory, configuration file, mission files and profile directory. - Start the unmodded command manually, or start the systemd unit after checking its paths.
- Watch the terminal and profile/RPT logs for missing libraries, an invalid configuration path, a missing mission or a bind failure on the selected port.
- Connect from the host itself or from a permitted local address to prove that the process is listening.
- Test from the public address and confirm that the server browser can query it.
Stop at the first error and fix it before proceeding. A stable vanilla launch gives you a known-good baseline; otherwise a later mod error can be mistaken for a firewall or mission problem.

Workshop downloads may require Steam authentication even when the base server application can be installed anonymously. - Confirm that the mod version matches the DayZ server version you are running.
- Check whether the mod is client-visible or server-only and place it in
-modor-serverModaccordingly. - Follow the mod author’s required load order; there is no universal order that works for every collection.
- Copy and preserve required key or signature files when the mod supplies them.
- Tell players which client-side mods are required and keep their versions synchronized with the server.
- Read the RPT and profile logs after each addition. Add one mod or one tightly related group at a time so a failure has an identifiable cause.
Do not assume that two mods are compatible because each works alone. Compatibility, dependencies, key files and update behavior must be checked for the individual release you install.
8. Update without losing the world
Bohemia states that updating uses the same SteamCMD commands as installation, and Steam Support identifies SteamCMD as the standard update path for Steam dedicated servers. Stop DayZ before replacing files:

sudo systemctl start dayz.serviceIf you run the process manually, stop it cleanly before the SteamCMD update instead of overwriting files while the executable is active.
Back up before an update or mod change

- Persistence and storage data, including any custom root selected with
-storage - Your current mod list, launch command and version notes
Keep a rollback copy when applying a major server update or changing several mods together. After restarting, verify that the process remains up, the mission loads, the query port responds and existing persistence is visible before inviting players back.

9. Troubleshoot by symptom

10. A maintenance routine that stays predictable
For a small private server, a simple routine is enough: check the service status and available SSD space, review recent RPT errors, confirm that the configured ports remain allowed, and record every DayZ or mod version change. Schedule backups of configuration, mission and persistence data before updates. For a public or heavily modded server, keep a written mod manifest and a rollback copy so you can reproduce the last working launch.
Use the minimum hardware figures as a floor, not a target. SSD storage, additional RAM and a strong single-thread CPU reduce the chance that logs, persistence or mod files compete with the base server. Performance still depends on the exact mission, mod set, player activity and other processes on the host; the published requirements do not establish a universal player limit or bandwidth figure.
