To place OpenVPN clients directly on your existing Ethernet LAN, create an operating-system bridge that joins the LAN-facing Ethernet adapter to an OpenVPN TAP adapter. Put the server’s LAN IP address and netmask on that bridge, start it before OpenVPN, and use dev tap with server-bridge in the server configuration. Do not use the routed dev tun and server directives for this design.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenVPN, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
A bridge works at Layer 2. A connected VPN client can therefore appear to be on the same subnet as local computers, receive broadcasts such as DHCP and discovery traffic, and use Ethernet-based protocols that a routed VPN would not carry. That extra reach is also the reason bridging needs tighter firewalling and is usually more complex than a routed tunnel.

What an OpenVPN network bridge does
An Ethernet bridge is a virtual interface created by the operating system. It forwards frames between one or more member interfaces. In this case, the members are a physical Ethernet NIC connected to the private LAN and a TAP interface used by OpenVPN.
The bridge, not the physical NIC, owns the host’s LAN address. The physical adapter and TAP adapter become Layer-2 ports with no individual IP configuration. OpenVPN sends tunnel traffic through the TAP member; it must refer to that TAP device in its dev directive rather than referring to the bridge name.

Because Ethernet broadcasts cross the bridge, a remote client can use the LAN’s DHCP service and may discover printers, file servers, or legacy applications that depend on broadcast or non-IP Ethernet traffic. A routed TUN tunnel forwards IP packets between separate subnets instead and is normally easier to secure and operate.
Bridge or routed tunnel: choose before changing the server
| Requirement | Layer-2 bridge with TAP | Routed tunnel with TUN |
|---|---|---|
| Network model | Extends the Ethernet broadcast domain; clients appear on the LAN subnet. | Creates a separate VPN subnet and routes IP traffic between networks. |
| Address assignment | Can use the existing LAN DHCP scope or a bridged address pool, provided the bridge and firewall pass the traffic. | Uses a VPN address pool declared with server; LAN DHCP broadcasts do not normally cross the routed boundary. |
| Broadcast and non-IP protocols | Supported when the protocol is compatible with the bridged Ethernet segment. | Usually unavailable unless separately routed or proxied. |
| Exposure and firewall surface | Broader: broadcasts and more LAN protocols reach VPN clients. | Narrower: you can permit only selected IP networks and ports. |
| Operational work | Requires OS bridge management, TAP handling, address migration, and careful startup ordering. | Usually requires only routed interfaces, IP forwarding, and firewall rules. |
| Best fit | Legacy discovery, same-subnet applications, or a genuine need for Layer-2 behavior. | Remote access to selected servers, subnets, and services. |
If clients only need access to a few internal IP services, keep a routed tun design unless a specific application proves that Layer 2 is required.

Use the private LAN adapter
Select the Ethernet interface connected to the protected internal network. Never add the adapter used for the server’s direct Internet connection to the bridge. Bridging that interface can expose the LAN to an untrusted segment and can create loops or destroy the server’s reachability.
Keep endpoint addresses outside the bridged subnet
The local and remote OpenVPN endpoint addresses must remain reachable without being sent through the new bridge. Keep the Internet-facing address, gateway, and any management path outside the bridged LAN subnet. Otherwise, a route or default-gateway change can send tunnel control traffic back into the tunnel and produce a routing loop.
Reserve the address range
Choose a LAN address for the bridge and a non-overlapping range for VPN clients if the server will allocate addresses from a bridge pool. The illustrative OpenVPN declaration below uses a bridge address of 192.168.8.4, netmask 255.255.255.0, and a client range from 192.168.8.128 through 192.168.8.254. These values are examples only; use addresses appropriate to your LAN and ensure they are not handed out to other devices.
Create the bridge on Linux
Interface names and network-management tools differ by distribution. The sequence is stable: install bridge support, create the bridge, attach the LAN NIC and TAP device, move the address to the bridge, permit the traffic, and only then start OpenVPN.

1. Install or enable bridge support
Older distributions use the bridge-utils package and its brctl command. Modern distributions commonly manage bridges with NetworkManager, systemd-networkd, or the ip and bridge commands. Use the method native to your distribution so the bridge is recreated automatically at boot.
2. Identify the LAN-facing interface
Run ip link and ip addr and identify the private Ethernet adapter, for example eth1. Do not assume that eth0 is the correct interface: predictable interface names such as enp3s0 are common.
3. Create the bridge and TAP member
The following commands show the operation with the modern ip tools. Replace names and addresses with your own values, and expect the host to lose connectivity briefly while the address is moved.
# Create the bridge and a persistent TAP device
ip link add name br0 type bridge
openvpn --mktun --dev tap0
# Remove the address from the physical NIC before enslaving it
ip addr flush dev eth1
ip link set dev eth1 master br0
ip link set dev tap0 master br0
# Bring every member and the bridge up
ip link set dev eth1 up
ip link set dev tap0 up
ip link set dev br0 up
If your OpenVPN package creates the TAP device itself, do not create a conflicting persistent device. In that case, configure the service and bridge-management hooks so the TAP interface is attached as soon as it appears.

Apply the former Ethernet address, netmask, broadcast value, and the correct gateway to the bridge. A representative static configuration is:
ip addr add 192.168.8.4/24 brd 192.168.8.255 dev br0
ip route replace default via 192.168.8.1
Do not leave the same address on eth1. A member interface with its own LAN address can cause ARP confusion and intermittent connectivity. Persist the configuration through NetworkManager, systemd-networkd, or the distribution’s network configuration rather than relying on commands typed manually after every reboot.

5. Permit bridge and TAP traffic
The official OpenVPN example permits input on both the TAP and bridge interfaces and permits forwarding from the bridge:
iptables -A INPUT -i tap0 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i br0 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -i br0 -j ACCEPT
These permissive examples are starting points, not a complete security policy. Add only the return traffic and services required by your environment, account for your distribution’s nftables or firewalld rules, and ensure that bridge netfilter settings do not silently block DHCP or other required broadcasts.

Use TAP and server-bridge
Replace the routed directives with a TAP device and a matching bridge declaration:
dev tap0
server-bridge 192.168.8.4 255.255.255.0 192.168.8.128 192.168.8.254
The first address is the server’s address on the bridged LAN, followed by the LAN netmask and the client allocation range. The bridge must already exist and own that address before the OpenVPN service starts. The OpenVPN configuration should name tap0, not br0; the bridge is an operating-system object, while TAP is the VPN interface OpenVPN operates.
Match the client transport and device
Every client must use TAP-compatible settings and the same transport protocol selected by the server, such as UDP or TCP. A client configured for dev tun, or for a different UDP/TCP choice, will not join this bridged segment. On systems with more than one TAP adapter, identify the intended adapter explicitly using the platform’s device-name option.
Start and stop in the correct order
- Create or restore
br0, attach the physical NIC and TAP device, and assign the bridge’s IP configuration. - Confirm that the bridge is up and that the server can reach its LAN gateway.
- Start OpenVPN with the bridged configuration.
- During shutdown, stop OpenVPN first, then detach or remove the TAP device and shut down the bridge according to your network manager.
Automate this dependency with your service manager. Starting OpenVPN first can leave it with a missing TAP member or an interface that is not yet attached to the bridge.

Create the bridge on Windows
Windows exposes the operation through Network Connections, but labels and TAP driver behavior vary by Windows release and by the installed OpenVPN package.
- Install a TAP adapter supported by the OpenVPN version you intend to run.
- Open the Network Connections window, commonly by running
ncpa.cpl. - Select the private physical Ethernet adapter and the OpenVPN TAP adapter together.
- Right-click the selection and choose the command to create a network bridge, usually labeled Bridge Connections.
- Wait for Windows to create the bridge object and confirm that both adapters are shown as members.
- Open the TCP/IP properties of the bridge object and enter the LAN address, netmask, gateway, and DNS settings there. Remove the LAN address from the individual member adapter; members should not carry separate copies of the configuration.
- In the OpenVPN profile, use
dev tap. If several TAP adapters exist, usedev-nodewith the exact adapter name required by the installed driver.
Verify the target OpenVPN and TAP driver documentation before deploying this on production Windows hosts. A driver update can change adapter names or whether a particular bridge combination is supported.
Why a VPN client does not receive a LAN DHCP address
A bridged TAP client can receive DHCP broadcasts only when the complete Layer-2 path is working. Check each of these points:
- The VPN server is using
dev tap, notdev tun. - The TAP interface is actually a member of
br0(or the Windows bridge), and the physical LAN adapter is the correct private NIC. - The bridge, not the physical member, owns the server’s LAN address.
- The OpenVPN service started after the bridge was created and the TAP device was attached.
- Host firewall rules allow input and forwarding on the TAP and bridge interfaces, including DHCP broadcast traffic.
- The LAN DHCP server has available addresses and is reachable from the bridge; its scope may need reservations or policy changes for VPN clients.
- The client and server agree on TAP naming and on UDP or TCP transport.
If you configured a server-bridge client range, addresses may come from that declared range rather than from the LAN DHCP server. Do not mix an overlapping range with the LAN’s existing DHCP scope. If the requirement is specifically for the physical LAN DHCP service, ensure the bridge forwards broadcasts and that no firewall, VLAN boundary, switch security feature, or wireless isolation policy blocks them.
Firewall and security safeguards
Limit the LAN-facing exposure
Bridging gives remote clients access to the same broadcast domain, not merely to a few routed services. Apply client authentication and certificate controls, restrict which users can connect, and filter traffic between the TAP/bridge side and sensitive LAN systems. Permit only the protocols that the business requirement needs where practical.
Protect against accidental loops
Do not bridge two paths that already connect the same Ethernet segment. Keep the Internet-facing adapter out of the bridge and ensure that the OpenVPN endpoint route remains outside the bridged subnet. A loop can flood the LAN and make both the VPN and local network unusable.

Account for broadcast volume
Broadcast-heavy applications can consume tunnel bandwidth and expose device names or service advertisements to every connected VPN client. If the application works with a routed design, that narrower design reduces both traffic and attack surface.

Perform these checks from the server before handing the profile to users:
- Bridge membership: confirm that the physical LAN interface and TAP interface appear as bridge ports.
- Address ownership: verify that the LAN IP, netmask, broadcast address, and default route are on the bridge only.
- OpenVPN mode: inspect the running configuration and log for
dev tapand the expectedserver-bridgeline. - Endpoint reachability: confirm that the server can still reach its Internet endpoint and LAN gateway without sending that traffic through the VPN.
- Client addressing: connect one client and check whether it receives an address from the intended bridge pool or LAN DHCP scope.
- LAN tests: test a known host by IP, then test the required broadcast-dependent application. Do not treat a successful VPN handshake alone as proof that bridging works.
- Firewall logs: look for dropped packets on the bridge and TAP interfaces, especially DHCP, ARP, and return traffic.
Common failures and recovery steps
The host loses LAN connectivity after bridging
The former IP configuration is probably still on the physical NIC or was never moved to the bridge. Restore the address, netmask, broadcast, and gateway on br0, remove them from the member NIC, and bring the bridge up. If you are connected remotely, use an out-of-band console because changing bridge membership can interrupt the management session.
The OpenVPN service starts but clients cannot pass traffic
Check that the configured TAP name exists, is attached to the bridge, and is up. A mismatch between dev tap0 and the actual TAP unit is common when multiple VPN instances are installed. Then inspect firewall rules for both interface directions and verify that the bridge address is on the same LAN subnet as the gateway.
The client connects but receives no address
Confirm that the client profile uses TAP and that the bridge forwards broadcasts. Check the DHCP scope, address exclusions, VLAN placement, and host firewall. If a bridge pool is configured, verify that its start and end addresses are valid, unused on the LAN, and inside the declared netmask.
Some LAN services work while discovery does not
Direct IP connectivity can succeed even when broadcast discovery is blocked. Check bridge netfilter settings, firewall policies, wireless client isolation, and whether the application uses a protocol that can cross an Ethernet bridge. A routed design will not fix a true Layer-2 dependency; it requires the bridge path or an application-specific proxy.
The connection is unstable or the LAN floods with traffic
Look for an accidental second path between the same networks, a bridged Internet adapter, duplicate IP addresses, or a switch loop. Remove the unsafe member, restore the address on the bridge, and restart networking in the documented order.
Practical decision checklist
- Use bridging only when clients genuinely need same-subnet or Layer-2 behavior.
- Use a private LAN-facing NIC; never the direct Internet interface.
- Create the bridge before OpenVPN and place the IP configuration on the bridge.
- Use
dev tapandserver-bridge; do not combine them with routeddev tunandserverdirectives. - Keep the endpoint route outside the bridged subnet.
- Allow and monitor TAP/bridge traffic in the host firewall.
- Keep bridge client addresses separate from the ordinary LAN DHCP scope unless the design explicitly uses the LAN DHCP service.
- Document the bridge, TAP name, address ranges, startup dependency, and recovery console before deploying.
The Bottom Line
A working OpenVPN bridge is an operating-system Layer-2 bridge with the LAN address on the bridge interface, a TAP member attached to it, and OpenVPN configured with dev tap plus server-bridge. Build and firewall the bridge first, then start OpenVPN. If same-subnet broadcasts and legacy Ethernet behavior are not required, a routed TUN configuration is the safer and simpler choice.
