WordPress MCP integration lets an MCP-enabled AI client interact with WordPress, but there is no single setup for every site. Choose the route that matches your goal: connect a WordPress.com account, expose selected capabilities on a self-hosted site, or use MCP tools while developing a WordPress.org plugin.
What WordPress MCP integration means
MCP, or the Model Context Protocol, provides a way for an AI client to connect to tools and other capabilities. In WordPress, “MCP integration” describes several separate routes—not one universal plugin or connection. The right option depends on whether you want an AI client to work with a hosted account, a self-hosted site, or plugin-development information.

Choose the route that matches your goal
| Route | What it connects to | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress.com MCP server | An eligible WordPress.com account and its sites; qualifying Jetpack-connected self-hosted sites can also use it. | Let an MCP client work with account and site capabilities. |
| WordPress MCP Adapter | Abilities registered on a self-hosted WordPress site. | Expose site-specific functions as MCP tools, resources, or prompts. |
| WordPress.org Plugin Directory MCP server | Plugin Directory development services. | Help plugin authors consult guidelines, validate readmes, check submission status, and work with submissions. |
The Plugin Directory server is not a general connection for an AI agent to operate a live website. For that, use the WordPress.com route or configure the self-hosted Adapter.

WordPress.com provides a hosted MCP server at https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1. Its official guide describes browser-based OAuth 2.1 authorization and says the hosted connection requires no additional software installation. The account owner enables MCP in account settings, then adds the endpoint through the MCP client’s own connection settings.

Custom clients use dynamic registration and PKCE, then call the endpoint with a bearer token. The exact configuration fields depend on the client, so use that client’s MCP setup instructions rather than assuming one settings format works everywhere. See the WordPress.com MCP documentation for the current connection flow.
Check eligibility first
WordPress.com’s plan guidance, reported in 2026, says MCP is available on all paid plans. A free site has access for the first 30 days after creation. A self-hosted site connected through Jetpack must have Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete. Confirm current eligibility in the WordPress.com MCP support information before setting up a connection, as plan terms can change.

Expose self-hosted site capabilities with the MCP Adapter
The official WordPress MCP Adapter bridges the WordPress Abilities API and MCP. It can expose registered abilities as tools, resources, or prompts. In practice, an AI client can only use capabilities the site has made available and authorized; installing an adapter does not automatically grant unrestricted access to every site function.
For local development, the official developer example uses WP-CLI with STDIO transport. For a publicly accessible site or a setup that does not use STDIO, the documented approach uses an HTTP route with Automattic’s remote proxy and WordPress application-password or custom OAuth authentication. Configure the client to match the transport and authentication method chosen for the site. The WordPress developer article about the MCP Adapter describes the implementation options.

- WordPress.com: The account owner can choose read-only or full access. Account-level tool settings are shared across connected clients.
- Self-hosted Adapter: Developers choose which abilities to expose and must enforce authorization for them.
- Either route: Review proposed or generated actions before allowing changes to content, settings, or other site data. Grant only the permissions needed for the task.
Read access is a safer starting point when a workflow only needs to inspect information. Enable write access or expose write-capable abilities only when the intended task requires them and the authorization boundaries are clear.

Which WordPress MCP setup should you use?
- You use WordPress.com and want an AI client to work with your account’s sites: Start with the hosted WordPress.com MCP server and verify your plan eligibility.
- You run a self-hosted site and need to expose its own functions: Use the WordPress MCP Adapter, then select abilities, transport, and authentication for your environment.
- You are building or submitting a plugin: Use the Plugin Directory MCP server for its development and submission tasks, not as a live-site connector. See the Plugin Directory MCP server announcement.
