There is no universal CSS rule that safely removes every white gap from a WordPress page. The right fix depends on whether the space comes from margin, padding, a layout gap, a spacer block, or a theme rule. Find the element creating it, then change only the responsible property.
First identify where the gap appears
Note the gap’s location and scope before changing anything. Is it at the top edge, between the header and content, between two blocks, around an image, or above the footer? Does it appear on one page or across the site? These clues help distinguish a block-level setting from a template or site-wide layout rule.

A white region is not itself a technical diagnosis. Margin is space outside an element’s border; padding is space between its content and border. Either can create a similar-looking blank area. WordPress also applies spacing between blocks according to the container’s layout: flow layouts generally use top margins, while flex and grid layouts use the CSS gap property. The exact rule depends on the theme and container. See the WordPress Styles overview and WordPress spacing documentation.

Block themes: inspect the template and Styles
In a block theme, open the Site Editor and inspect the page’s template, template parts, and relevant blocks. Review available Styles and Layout or Spacing controls before adding an override. WordPress recommends starting with Styles options. Its Site Editor guide shows one example in which space at the top of a home page is reduced by adjusting the header template part’s bottom padding and the content area’s top padding. That example is not a universal setting; check which element owns the space on your site.
#1 Best Overall
To look for site-wide Additional CSS in the Styles interface, open the Styles screen and check its ellipsis menu. WordPress’s Styles overview says that in WordPress 6.9, Additional CSS controls moved into that menu. The available controls and exact route can vary with the theme and editor context. CSS saved through Styles is not overwritten by a theme update, but WordPress notes that it is cleared when you switch themes. See Styles overview.
Other themes and CSS entry points
Depending on the theme and editor context, CSS may be available through the Customizer or other documented custom CSS options. WordPress describes these entry points in its CSS – Advanced Administration Handbook. The route shown on your installation may differ, so use the controls available for your theme rather than relying on an older menu path.

Inspect the element before writing CSS
If the editor does not make the cause clear, use your browser’s developer tools to select the blank area or an adjacent element. Inspect the computed margin, padding, and gap, along with the element’s dimensions and parent layout. Check for a spacer block, too. Determine whether the space belongs to the element above, the element below, or their container; changing the wrong one can affect unrelated content.

When practical, give the relevant block a distinctive class in the editor, then target that class and only the side and property confirmed by inspection. For example, if the inspected cause is top margin, the pattern is:
Rank #3
.your-specific-block-class {
margin-block-start: 0;
}
This is an illustrative pattern, not a paste-ready fix: replace the class with one used by your site and use the property that actually creates the gap. If padding is responsible, adjust the appropriate padding side. If a flex or grid container’s gap creates the space, target that container’s gap setting instead. If the editor exposes a per-block-type CSS option, use it only when the change should apply to that block type more broadly.
A generic rule such as footer { margin-top: 0; } is appropriate only if inspection confirms that the relevant footer margin causes the gap. Avoid broad resets such as * { margin: 0; padding: 0; } and sweeping !important rules: they can remove intentional spacing throughout the site. WordPress generates container-specific CSS for block spacing, so a guessed selector may miss the actual rule or affect the wrong area.
Test the change on the page and on mobile
After saving, check the affected page at desktop and mobile widths. Confirm that the gap is gone without crowding neighboring content, overlapping the header, or disrupting other blocks. A global block-gap adjustment can tighten several areas at once; a WordPress.org support case describes unwanted margin space affecting a template or footer, but one user’s case does not establish how every theme behaves. Test the exact page and keep spacing that serves the layout. See the WordPress support example.
