Choose WordPress.com if you want hosting and many technical tasks handled for you; choose WordPress.org if you want to select your own host and have more control over the server and PHP. Neither is universally better. The main difference is hosting: both use WordPress software, but WordPress.com bundles managed hosting while a WordPress.org site needs a separate hosting provider.

What is the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?

WordPress.com is a hosted service: it provides the hosting environment and manages many of its technical operations. WordPress.org is the project’s home for the WordPress software. The software is free, but running a self-hosted site means arranging a host and handling more of the setup and upkeep yourself. WordPress.com’s comparison guide, last reviewed August 11, 2026, calls hosting the main distinction. See WordPress.com’s comparison.

A domain name and hosting are separate things. The domain is the address people use to reach a site; hosting stores the site’s files and makes them accessible online. WordPress.com can bundle hosting, while a self-hosted WordPress.org site requires you to arrange hosting separately. WordPress.com explains domains and hosting.

Which one fits your priorities?

Your priority Likely fit What to weigh
Less server setup and maintenance WordPress.com Hosting and many technical operations are managed for you. Check that the plan includes the features you need.
Control over the hosting environment and PHP WordPress.org with separate hosting You choose the provider and take on more configuration and maintenance.
Lowest total cost Compare current plans and hosting offers There is no universal cheapest choice. Compare renewal costs and what is included, not just the advertised starting price.
Plugins or custom themes Either, depending on plan and setup WordPress.com allows plugin installation on paid plans; self-hosting gives you direct control, but compatibility and quality still matter.
E-commerce or advanced development Compare exact requirements against plans and hosting WordPress.com tiers differ in commerce and developer features. Self-hosted capabilities depend on the host and configuration you choose.

How do costs compare?

“Free software” does not mean a free self-hosted website. With WordPress.org, the software is free, but you must account for hosting and domain costs. With WordPress.com, pricing depends on the plan. The total cost depends on the features and services you need, so compare the current plan details rather than assuming one route is always cheaper.

When comparing, include storage, site visits or traffic allowances, built-in features, security, backups, and support—not only the headline price. Hosting providers may advertise introductory offers that differ from renewal terms. WordPress.com likewise notes that direct cost comparisons can be difficult because plans and included services vary. Read its guide to choosing a host.

What about plugins, themes, and custom features?

Plugin access on WordPress.com depends on the plan. Its plan guide says plugin installation is available on paid plans, and built-in features may mean you do not need a separate plugin for some tasks. Confirm the current plan’s feature list before choosing. Check WordPress.com plan features.

Self-hosting gives you more direct control over the site environment, but it also makes you responsible for choosing and maintaining compatible software. In either case, verify that a theme or plugin supports your required features and works with your setup; access to customization does not guarantee that every extension will be suitable.

Who handles backups and maintenance?

WordPress.com

WordPress.com’s backup guide, last reviewed October 5, 2026, says automated backups are available on Business and Commerce plans. On other plans, users can export content and media. Check the current plan details and backup process for the site you intend to run. Read the WordPress.com backup guide.

WordPress.org with separate hosting

Backup arrangements depend on the hosting provider and your own setup. Before launching, establish how backups are created, how often they run, how long they are retained, and how you would restore the site. Do not assume that every host includes the same backup service.

Can you move a site later?

WordPress.com says users own their site content and can move sites to or from its service. Portability does not guarantee that every theme, plugin, or configuration will transfer unchanged, so check how your particular features and data will be handled before moving. Review WordPress.com’s information about moving sites.

How to make the final choice

  1. List the features you need. Include plugins, custom themes, commerce, development access, backups, and support.
  2. Check the current plan or host details. For WordPress.com, verify which plan includes each required feature. For self-hosting, confirm what the provider supplies and what you must configure.
  3. Compare total and renewal costs. Include the domain, hosting or plan, relevant security and backup services, and any features you would otherwise need to add.
  4. Decide how much maintenance you want to own. If you prefer a managed service, WordPress.com is the more direct fit. If you want to choose the hosting environment and accept the upkeep, self-hosting through WordPress.org is the more flexible route.
