These methods have different scopes; a child-account setting is not automatically a device-wide block.
Choose a method by who controls Chrome
| Method | Who configures it | What it affects | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome extension | An individual user, if extensions are allowed | Site access in the Chrome profile where it is configured | Depends on the extension and its permissions; the evidence does not establish that any particular extension reliably blocks YouTube. |
| Family Link and supervised YouTube settings | A parent or guardian | A child’s supervised account and YouTube experience | Controls and eligibility vary by the child’s age and location; they do not necessarily block the website for every Chrome user on a device. |
| Chrome Enterprise URL policies | An organization’s Chrome administrator | Managed Chrome browsers or ChromeOS devices | Requires administrative access. Google describes URL rules as basic management and recommends stronger filtering for more robust needs. |
Block YouTube in a personal Chrome profile
A Chrome extension is the browser-level route for an individual. Install one only if you trust its publisher and are comfortable with the access it requests. Google Chrome Help warns: “Important: Only approve extensions that you trust.” An extension’s availability does not mean Google has approved it as a YouTube blocker.

- Open the Chrome Web Store and select an extension only after reviewing its permissions and other available details.
- Follow Chrome’s installation prompts. If Chrome says an administrator blocks installation, you will need to ask that administrator rather than change a managed setting yourself.
- In Chrome, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Review the extension and its site access. Where supported, limit access to selected sites or specific sites.
- Use the extension’s own controls to add YouTube to its block list, if that feature is available. The Google guidance cited here explains extension installation and site access, but does not verify the effectiveness or operation of any specific blocker.
Site-access settings govern where an extension can operate; they are not, by themselves, proof that YouTube is blocked. If the extension does not provide a working block rule, changing its site access will not create one. This approach is tied to the Chrome profile and extension, not a universal restriction on every browser or account using the device.
Google’s instructions for installing and managing Chrome extensions explain how to review extension settings and access.

Limit YouTube for a child with supervised settings
For a child’s account, use the parent controls for the supervised YouTube experience rather than treating a Chrome extension as the only safeguard. Depending on the account and availability, parents can adjust the content level, block specific channels, turn off autoplay, and pause watch or search history through YouTube Family Center or Family Link.
Adjust a supervised YouTube experience
Use YouTube Family Center or the relevant Family Link controls to manage the child’s supervised YouTube settings. Available choices depend on the child’s account and circumstances; follow Google’s current instructions for the specific account rather than assuming every control appears for every family.
A channel block is limited: it blocks uploads from that channel, but it does not block reuploads by other channels or similar channels. Use it to limit a selected channel, not to prevent all access to YouTube.

Check which experience is available
Families may have YouTube Kids or a supervised YouTube experience available, depending on location and the child’s age. Google’s family guidance describes eligibility in relation to being under 13 or the applicable age in the child’s country or region. Check current availability for your location and child’s account.
Family Link can manage parental controls on Chrome and YouTube, but account-level controls should not be mistaken for a device-wide website block. Confirm which account and experience a setting affects before relying on it.

Block YouTube on managed work or school Chrome
If Chrome or the device is managed by work or school, ask the organization’s administrator. Chrome Enterprise administrators can set URL blocklists and allowlists for managed Chrome browsers and ChromeOS devices. These are organization-level policies, not ordinary Chrome settings that a user can override from the browser.

Administrators can also use management policies to allow or block which apps and extensions users may install. Those controls require administrative authority.
Administrators can consult Google’s documentation for blocking and allowing URLs and managing apps and extensions.
Which approach fits your situation?
- Your own Chrome profile: Consider an extension if you can install it and its permissions and features suit your needs.
- Your child’s account: Use Family Link and supervised YouTube settings for account-focused controls, and check which experience is available for your child and location.
- A work or school browser: Contact the administrator; only the organization can configure its managed URL and extension policies.
The right choice depends on whether you need to restrict one profile, guide a child’s account, or apply a rule across managed browsers. None of these controls should be assumed to cover a broader scope than the setting actually manages.
