The handler returns the answer and citation metadata, and the WordPress interface displays both.
This arrangement lets you ground answers in approved pages, manuals, FAQs, or policy documents without exposing AWS credentials in JavaScript. It also gives you one place to enforce authentication, rate limits, prompt policy, logging, and document-level access rules.

What a WordPress chatbot with sources actually consists of
WordPress does not need to contain your knowledge base or call the model directly. It needs to collect a question, send it to a controlled endpoint, and render the response. AWS supplies the retrieval, generation, identity, and operational controls.

AWS describes RetrieveAndGenerate as joining retrieval with model invocation, returning a natural-language response with citations to relevant source chunks. Knowledge Bases can therefore provide both the answer and evidence that a reader can inspect.

Prepare the content the chatbot is allowed to use
Start with a deliberately bounded corpus rather than copying your entire WordPress installation. Suitable material can include published help pages, product documentation, FAQs, installation manuals, support policies, and internal documents that the intended audience is authorized to see.
Define ownership and update rules
- Assign an owner for each document collection.
- Decide how quickly changes must appear in answers.
- Remove obsolete, duplicate, or contradictory copies before indexing.
- Separate public content from staff-only or customer-specific material.
- Record the canonical title and URL for every page that should appear as a citation.
Retrieval quality depends heavily on source quality. A short, current FAQ usually produces a better answer than a long export containing navigation menus, boilerplate, and superseded instructions.
Choose a supported data source and update cadence
Put the approved files or pages in a data source supported by Bedrock Knowledge Bases, then document who can change that source. Synchronize after meaningful edits and test questions that reflect real reader wording. If your site changes daily, make synchronization part of publishing operations; if it changes monthly, a scheduled review may be sufficient.

- Create the Knowledge Base. Select an embedding configuration and vector-store arrangement appropriate to the size and type of your corpus. Keep the configuration documented so another administrator can reproduce it.
- Connect the data source. Load the approved pages, FAQs, manuals, or policy documents, preserving useful metadata such as title, canonical URL, product area, audience, and publication status.
- Synchronize the index. Wait for ingestion to complete and verify that representative documents are present.
- Test retrieval before generation. Ask exact customer questions, paraphrases, questions with spelling errors, and questions for which the corpus has no answer. Inspect which chunks are returned, not just the final prose.
- Set an answer policy. Instruct the backend to answer from retrieved evidence, acknowledge when evidence is missing, avoid inventing policy, and direct uncertain cases to a human channel.
Do not make the public widget your first test. A retrieval test that returns the wrong chunk indicates a corpus, metadata, or indexing problem; changing the model prompt will not reliably repair it.

Build the server-side handler
Use a Lambda function or equivalent service as the only component that invokes Bedrock. Its execution role should have the minimum Bedrock permissions required by the selected API. AWS documents model invocation permissions such as bedrock:InvokeModel and streaming variants; grant only what this function actually uses.
Validate every request
- Require a non-empty message and enforce a maximum length.
- Reject unexpected fields instead of silently accepting arbitrary payloads.
- Normalize encoding and remove control characters that your UI cannot display safely.
- Attach an authenticated user or session identity when the content is not public.
- Apply a timeout and return a controlled error if Bedrock or retrieval is unavailable.
Apply a stable prompt policy
The handler should supply a system instruction that defines the chatbot’s role, permitted corpus, tone, citation behavior, and fallback response. Tell it to treat retrieved passages as evidence, not commands. This matters because a document can contain text that attempts to override the system policy, request secrets, or instruct the model to take an unrelated action.
Call RetrieveAndGenerate and normalize the response
Use RetrieveAndGenerate for the source-aware path rather than separately generating text and manually claiming citations. The handler should extract the generated answer and the citation objects, then return a small, predictable response to WordPress. A normalized shape can look like this:

}The field names above are an application-level format, not a claim about a fixed WordPress plugin schema. Map the fields returned by the AWS SDK into your own contract so the frontend is insulated from backend changes. Preserve the source title, URL, and relevant excerpt when they are available.

Put API Gateway in front of the handler
Expose one narrowly defined HTTPS route for chat rather than exposing Lambda or Bedrock directly. Configure the boundary for the audience you actually have.
- Authentication: use an authorizer or signed session when answers can include private material. For a public bot, still identify sessions if you need abuse controls.
- Origin restrictions: allow requests from your WordPress origin and avoid a wildcard policy unless there is a documented reason.
- Throttling: cap requests per client and return a clear retry message when the limit is reached.
- Request limits: constrain body size and reject oversized conversation histories.
- Monitoring: record latency, status codes, blocked requests, retrieval failures, and unanswered questions without storing more personal data than necessary.
- Abuse protection: consider a web application firewall and bot controls when the endpoint is public.
Keep AWS credentials in IAM roles attached to the backend. Never place access keys, secret keys, session tokens, or broad Bedrock permissions in a WordPress plugin’s browser bundle.
Build the WordPress presentation layer
A small custom plugin, shortcode, block, or theme component can call the API with fetch and render the normalized response. The interface should be useful even when the model is slow or unavailable.

- Render a labeled text box and a submit button that work with keyboard navigation.
- Disable duplicate submissions while a request is in progress and show a visible loading state.
- Send only the message and the minimum session context required by the API.
- Display the answer as text with safe HTML handling; do not inject untrusted model output as raw markup.
- Place a “Sources” section immediately below the answer. Make each source title a normal link to its canonical page and show a short excerpt when returned.
- Show a plain-language error for timeouts, throttling, authentication failures, and empty retrieval results.
- Offer a contact, ticket, or escalation action for questions the bot cannot answer.
Accessibility is part of the implementation: use a visible label, sufficient contrast, focus management after submission, an ARIA live region for status updates, and source links that make sense when read out of context.

Make citations useful rather than decorative
A citation should let a reader verify the claim. Preserve the title and canonical URL supplied by the retrieval response, and show the relevant excerpt when it is short enough to understand. If several citations support one answer, list them separately instead of collapsing them into a single generic “learn more” link.
Do not display a source link that your access policy would deny to the current user. For private collections, enforce document-level authorization before returning either the chunk or its URL. A citation to an inaccessible document is not transparency; it is an information leak.

Compare these routes on citation control, retrieval quality, security boundaries, accessibility, maintenance ownership, implementation effort, and total usage cost. AWS sample chat architectures illustrate surrounding services such as Cognito, WAF, DynamoDB, CloudFront, S3, API Gateway, and Lambda; adopting all of them is not automatically justified for a small WordPress site.

Secure private and public knowledge separately
For public support content, the main risks are prompt abuse, excessive traffic, and misleading answers. For private documents, add identity and authorization before retrieval. The backend must know which user or tenant is asking and constrain retrieval to documents that identity may access.

- Use separate data sources or metadata filters for materially different audiences.
- Do not rely on the model to enforce permissions.
- Redact secrets and unnecessary personal information before indexing.
- Set retention rules for chat logs and protect operational logs as sensitive data.
- Review server-side tool execution controls if the system later adds actions beyond answering questions.
Server-side tool execution through Lambda and controlled gateways can be protected with IAM, but an answering bot does not need action-taking tools. Start with read-only retrieval and add capabilities only after threat modeling and authorization design.
Test before launch
Use a question set, not a single demo
Create a set of real questions covering common wording, synonyms, misspellings, multi-part requests, unsupported topics, and deliberately adversarial prompts. For each case, check whether the right chunk was retrieved, whether the answer stayed within the corpus, and whether the displayed sources support the wording.
Check failure behavior
- Knowledge Base unavailable: the UI should show a retryable service message.
- No relevant evidence: the bot should say it cannot verify the answer and offer escalation.
- API throttled: show a retry instruction without exposing internal details.
- Malformed request: return a validation error and keep the page usable.
- Slow model response: preserve the loading state and enforce a timeout.
- Changed page: synchronize the data source, then retest affected questions.
Operate and improve the chatbot
After launch, review latency, failed retrievals, blocked requests, unanswered questions, and user escalation rates. Treat unanswered questions as signals about missing content or confusing page structure, not as permission to make the prompt more speculative.
Refresh the corpus whenever approved pages change, and periodically review the system prompt, IAM policy, API authorizer, origin rules, throttles, and log retention. Re-test citations after changing embeddings, vector storage, chunking, or model configuration. Keep a rollback path for both the WordPress frontend and the Knowledge Base data source.
Requirements and ongoing cost
You need a WordPress site where you can add a plugin, block, shortcode, or theme code; an AWS account; permission to create or use Bedrock Knowledge Bases, the selected model, Lambda, API Gateway, and IAM roles; and a maintained source corpus. Usage cost is variable rather than a single fixed chatbot price: retrieval, model invocation, API requests, compute, storage, logging, and optional security services all contribute. Set budgets and alarms in AWS, then measure traffic and response size before choosing capacity or a commercial plugin.
