Wordle Hard Mode requires you to use the hints already revealed in every later guess: keep green letters in their known positions and include yellow letters somewhere in the word. It does not tell you which legal guess is best. Choose it if you enjoy having clues enforced; use standard mode if you want the freedom to try a fresh-letter probe.
What is Wordle Hard Mode?
The official Wordle instructions state: “Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses.” In Wordle, green means a letter is correct and in the correct position; yellow means the letter appears in the answer but in a different position. Hard Mode makes those clues constraints on future guesses.

In practical terms, you cannot ignore a revealed useful letter simply to try a word built from new letters. Standard mode allows that kind of exploratory guess. The distinction matters most when several answers remain possible and a probe using fresh letters could help separate them.
The requirement is about whether a guess follows the clues, not whether it is strategically strong. A legal guess can still reveal little. The official rule wording is available in the official Wordle instructions.

How should you choose a Hard Mode guess?
Before each guess, use the feedback to update what can still be the answer. A useful guess should satisfy the known constraints and, where possible, distinguish among the plausible candidates.
- Record the greens. Keep each green letter in its confirmed position.
- Track the yellows. Each yellow letter must appear in a later guess, but not in the position where it was marked yellow.
- Account for all feedback. Duplicate letters can make feedback more complicated than simply “this letter is present.” Use the full pattern rather than treating a yellow letter as an unrestricted requirement.
- Consider the remaining answers. Ask which plausible answers still fit the clues, then look for a legal guess that separates them.
- Decide whether to probe or solve. If few candidates remain, guessing one directly may make sense. If many remain, compare how a legal guess would divide the possibilities.
Formal Wordle strategy research treats guess selection as a problem of choosing words that reduce uncertainty among possible answers. The INFORMS article An Exact Solution to Wordle discusses optimal strategy and outlines Hard Mode rules. Its strategic framing helps explain why clue compliance and information value are separate questions; it does not make one move best in every position.

What do published Hard Mode results show?
A 2022 IEEE COG paper, Using Wordle for Learning to Design and Compare Strategies, reports results for a particular Hard Mode strategy simulated across two runs of the 2,315-answer set:

|---|---|
| 4.11 guesses on average | The average for the paper’s stated Hard Mode strategy across its two runs. |
| 4,630 games | The total number of games across those two runs on the 2,315-answer set. |
| 81 failures (1.75%) | Games in those runs that were not solved within six attempts. |
The paper notes that random choices could produce different outcomes in repeated runs. These figures describe that study’s strategy and simulation—not a typical human player, a guarantee, or evidence that Hard Mode always improves or worsens a person’s score.
Should you play Wordle on Hard Mode?
There is no universally better mode. The choice comes down to how much you want the rules to constrain your guesses and whether you enjoy that constraint.
| Choose… | If you prefer… |
|---|---|
| Hard Mode | Having to use revealed clues, even when that narrows your legal options. |
| Standard mode | The freedom to make a fresh-letter probe that does not follow every revealed clue. |
| Standard mode with a self-imposed rule | Usually playing clue-first, but keeping the option to break that pattern when an exploratory guess seems useful. |
Hard Mode is not established as consistently harder or better-scoring for human players. It changes the choices available after feedback; whether that makes the puzzle more satisfying is personal.
