Wordle FAQ: Valid Guesses, Repeated Letters, and Sharing Results

Wordle accepts some guesses that cannot be answers. Here’s how valid words, duplicate-letter colors, and sharing results work.

Wordle gives you six tries to find a valid five-letter word, but an accepted guess is not necessarily eligible to be the answer. Repeated letters are scored by matching exact positions first, then counting only remaining copies in the answer. Sharing is available in Discord’s licensed Wordle Activity; its help page does not establish exactly what the current New York Times website shares.

What words are valid guesses in Wordle?

A guess must be a valid five-letter entry recognized by the game. Discord’s official FAQ for its NYT-licensed Wordle Activity describes the rules as six tries, with each guess a valid five-letter word: Discord’s Wordle FAQ (updated May 20, 2025).

“Valid guess” means the game accepts the entry; it does not mean the entry can be the answer. The American Mathematical Society’s June 2022 explainer described a larger set of accepted guesses split between possible answers and other guesses. Its reported counts—12,957 accepted words and approximately 2,300 possible answers—are historical figures, not current totals: American Mathematical Society, “Wordle is a game of chance”.

Can a guess be accepted but not be the answer?

Yes. Wordle has a larger list of accepted guesses and a smaller pool of possible answers. A word can therefore be accepted without being eligible to appear as the solution.

A November 7, 2022 Washington Post report said the New York Times had introduced a curated answer list while leaving the larger dictionary of valid English-word guesses uncurated. The article noted that some plural forms could be allowed as guesses but excluded from answers under the policy it described. Those are details of the policy reported at that time, not a current list of which individual words can be solutions: The Washington Post, “The New York Times is finally making changes to Wordle”.

Can Wordle have repeated letters?

Yes. Both the answer and a guess can contain the same letter more than once. For duplicate-letter feedback, Wordle first marks letters that match the answer in the same position as green. It then considers unmatched copies: a guessed copy is yellow only if the answer still has an unmatched copy of that letter. Any extra guessed copy is gray.

Why did one of my repeated letters turn gray?

Because the answer has fewer copies of that letter than your guess, after exact-position matches have been counted. The American Mathematical Society illustrates this with answer DECOY and guess ODDER: the answer has one D, so only one of the two guessed Ds can be marked as present.

How do I share my Wordle results?

In Discord’s NYT-licensed Wordle Activity, the official help page says that after completing the daily puzzle, players can press “Share” to share their score with friends. It also says the Activity’s daily answer matches the NYT game for that day: Discord’s Wordle FAQ.

That documentation describes Discord’s Activity, not the current NYT website’s share feature. It does not establish exactly what the NYT site’s share output contains or whether it handles spoilers in a particular way. Check the share screen in the version you are using before posting if you want to avoid revealing information.
