Wordle asks you to find a hidden five-letter word in six guesses. Enter a valid five-letter guess, then use the colored tiles to work out which letters belong in the answer and where they go.
How to play Wordle
- Enter a five-letter word the game accepts, then submit it.
- Read the color feedback on all five tiles.
- Use what you learned to choose another valid guess. You have six guesses in total.
- Continue until you find the answer or run out of guesses. The daily puzzle refreshes at midnight in your local time, according to the current guide.
The game accepts more words as guesses than it uses as possible answers. An accepted word is therefore not necessarily a candidate for the hidden solution. The accepted-word and answer sets can change, so an exact dictionary or list size should not be treated as fixed.

What the green, yellow, and gray tiles mean
- Green: The letter appears in the answer in that exact position.
- Yellow: The letter appears in the answer, but in a different position.
- Gray: The letter is not in the answer, subject to an important exception when your guess repeats a letter.
For example, if a tile turns green in the third position, keep that letter there in later guesses. If a tile turns yellow, keep the letter but try it somewhere else. Treat the feedback as constraints on the answer, not just hints about which letters seem promising.
Can Wordle have repeated letters?
Yes. The answer can contain the same letter more than once. A repeated letter in your guess does not prove that the answer contains the same number of copies: each copy’s feedback depends on how many copies the answer contains. One copy might be yellow or green while an extra copy is gray. When a repeated-letter guess produces mixed colors, do not assume the gray tile rules out the letter altogether; it may only show that the answer has fewer copies than your guess.

A beginner strategy for using each guess
- Open with variety. Choose an accepted word containing several distinct, common letters. You do not need to memorize one supposedly perfect opener.
- Record the pattern. Keep green letters in place, move yellow letters to different positions, and note letters that appear gray.
- Eliminate words that break the clues. Before submitting, check that your candidate respects every known position and avoids ruled-out letters, while accounting for possible repeated-letter feedback.
- Test duplicates when the clues point that way. If ordinary patterns do not fit, consider whether the answer uses a letter more than once.
- Choose between exploration and solving. If several answers remain, a guess that tests useful new letters may distinguish them. If the clues already point strongly to one answer, try that likely solution.
A mathematical study by Dimitris Bertsimas and Alex Paskov, published online in 2024 in INFORMS’ Operations Research (in an issue dated May–June 2025), found that SALET was the best opening guess under the study’s model. Its algorithm found every hidden word in the analyzed set within five guesses and averaged 3.421 guesses when starting with SALET. That result depends on the paper’s word set and objective; it is not a guarantee for current daily puzzles or a universal recommendation for human players. Read the study.
What is Hard Mode?
Standard mode lets you use a guess to test new letters even if it does not reuse every clue you have uncovered. Hard Mode requires later guesses to use revealed green and yellow clues. That extra constraint can make exploration less flexible, so beginners who want to test letters freely may find standard mode easier at first. Hard Mode changes how you may guess; it does not change the goal of finding the answer in six guesses.

Keep a simple clue checklist
- Which letters are fixed in place?
- Which known letters must move to another position?
- Which letters have been ruled out, and could a gray tile instead reflect an extra copy of a repeated letter?
- Does the next guess either test useful new letters or make a strong candidate answer?
